2026-06-15x86/ioperm: Prevent NULL dereference on theoretical missing IO bitmapLi RongQing
Outside the IOPL emulation path, the IO bitmap is always expected to be allocated when TIF_IO_BITMAP is set. The paranoid WARN_ON_ONCE() handles the case where the flag and the pointer got out of sync. In this theoretical scenario, which presumes some other bug in the code that triggers the WARN_ON_ONCe(), return early, instead of continuing and dereferencing a NULL pointer. The allocation can sleep doing direct reclaim and runs memcg charging, which extends the critical section and stalls any concurrent reader on the same mutex. Now up to 8 pages are pre-allocated before the mutex is taken, leftovers are recycled into the per-pipe tmp_page[] cache before unlock, and any remainder is released after unlock, keeping the allocator out of the critical section on both sides. On a writers x readers sweep with 64KB writes against a 1 MB pipe throughput improves 6-28% and average write latency drops 5-22%; under memory pressure - when the cost of holding the mutex across reclaim is highest - throughput improves 21-48% and latency drops 17-33%. The microbenchmark is added to selftests. - uaccess/sockptr: fix the ignored_trailing logic in copy_struct_to_user() to behave as documented and the usize check in copy_struct_from_sockptr() for user pointers, and add copy_struct_{from,to}_bounce_buffer() and copy_struct_to_sockptr() helpers for upcoming users (IPPROTO_SMBDIRECT, IPPROTO_QUIC). - bpf: add a sleepable bpf_real_inode() kfunc that resolves the real inode backing a dentry via d_real_inode(). On overlayfs the inode attached to the dentry doesn't carry the underlying device information; this is used by the filesystem restriction BPF program that was merged into systemd. - docs: add guidelines for submitting new filesystems, motivated by the maintenance burden abandoned and untestable filesystems impose on VFS developers, blocking infrastructure work like folio conversions and iomap migration. Fixes: - libfs: set SB_I_NOEXEC and SB_I_NODEV by default in init_pseudo() and drop the now-redundant assignments in callers. This began as a one-line dma-buf fix for a path_noexec() warning; a pseudo filesystem has no reason not to set SB_I_NOEXEC. All init_pseudo() callers were audited: the only visible effect is on dma-buf where SB_I_NOEXEC silences the warning. - Handle set_blocksize() failures in legacy filesystems (bfs, hpfs, qnx4, jfs, befs, affs, isofs, minix, ntfs3, omfs). Mounting a device with a sector size > PAGE_SIZE crashed roughly half of them; the rest had the same missing error handling pattern. To get an operable file descriptor from an O_PATH file descriptor it is possible to use openat(fd, ".", O_DIRECTORY) for directories, but other file types require going through open("/proc/<pid>/fd/<nr>") and thus depend on a functioning procfs. With O_EMPTYPATH an empty path string is accepted and LOOKUP_EMPTY is set at path resolution time, allowing to reopen the file behind the file descriptor directly. Selftests are included. - Add an OPENAT2_REGULAR flag for openat2(2) which refuses to open anything but regular files with the new EFTYPE error code. This implements the "ability to only open regular files" feature requested by userspace via uapi-group.org and protects services from being redirected to fifos, device nodes, and friends. All atomic_open implementations were audited for OPENAT2_REGULAR handling. Explicit checks were added to ceph, gfs2, nfs (v4), and cifs/smb - these are the filesystems whose atomic_open can encounter an existing non-regular file and would otherwise call finish_open() on it or return a misleading error code. The remaining implementations (9p, fuse, vboxsf, nfs v2/v3) only call finish_open() on freshly created files and use finish_no_open() for lookup hits, letting the VFS catch non-regular files via the do_open() safety net. Cleanups: - Migrate the openat2 selftests to the kselftest harness and move them under selftests/filesystems/. The tests were written in the early days of selftests' TAP support and the modern kselftest harness is much easier to follow and maintain. The contents of the tests are unchanged and the new emptypath tests are ported on top. - Make the LAST_XXX last-type constants private to fs/namei.c. The only user outside of fs/namei.c was ksmbd which only needs to know whether the last component is a regular one, so vfs_path_parent_lookup() now performs the LAST_NORM check internally. It stays attached to the task for its full lifetime. __ptrace_may_access() and several /proc owner and visibility checks need to consult two pieces of state for any observable task, including zombies that have already gone through exit_mm(): the dumpable mode and the user namespace captured at execve(). Both live on mm_struct today, which exit_mm() clears from the task long before the task is reaped. A reader that races with do_exit() observes task->mm == NULL and either fails the check or falls back to init_user_ns - which denies legitimate access to non-dumpable zombies that were running in a nested user namespace. mm_struct loses ->user_ns and the dumpability bits in ->flags. MMF_DUMPABLE_BITS is reserved so the MMF_DUMP_FILTER_* layout exposed via /proc/<pid>/coredump_filter stays stable. task->user_dumpable and its exit_mm() snapshot are removed. task_exec_state is the privilege domain established by an execve(). Within a thread group it is shared via refcount; across thread groups each task has its own: - CLONE_VM siblings (thread-group members, io_uring workers) refcount-share the parent's exec_state. - Non-CLONE_VM clones (fork(), vfork() without CLONE_VM) allocate a fresh exec_state inheriting the parent's dumpable mode and user_ns. - execve() in the child allocates a fresh instance and installs it under task_lock + exec_update_lock via task_exec_state_replace(). - Credential changes (setresuid, capset, ...) and prctl(PR_SET_DUMPABLE) update dumpability on the current task's exec_state, i.e., on the thread group's shared instance. On top of this exec_mmap() no longer tears down the old mm while holding exec_update_lock for writing and cred_guard_mutex. Neither lock is needed for that: exec_update_lock only exists to make the mm swap atomic with the later commit_creds() and all its readers operate on the new mm; none looks at the detached old mm. The cost was real: __mmput() runs exit_mmap() over the entire old address space and can block in exit_aio() waiting for in-flight AIO, so execve() of a large process blocked ptrace_attach() and every exec_update_lock reader for the duration of the teardown. "b" is ratified (Apr/2024) much later than its components zba/zbb/zbs (Jun/2021). With "b" added into riscv/extensions.yaml, a dependency checking rule is now enforced, which requires that when zba, zbb, and zbs are all specified, "b" must be added as well. Failing to do this will cause dtbs_check schema check warnings. According to uabi.rst, as a single-letter extension, "b" should be added after "c" in canonical order. Update k230.dtsi to conform to this rule. Also synchronize "riscv,isa" with "riscv,isa-extensions". Add initial dts for CanMV-K230 and K230-EVB powered by Canaan Kendryte K230 SoC [1]. Some key consideration: - Only place BigCore which is 1.6GHz RV64GCBV The existence of cache coherence between the two cores remains unknown since they have dedicated L2 caches. And the factory SDK uses it for other OS by default. I don't know whether the two CPUs on K230 SoC can be used in one system. So only place BigCore here. Meanwhile, although docs from Canaan said 1.6GHz Core with Vector is CPU1, the CSR.MHARTID of this core is 0. - Support for "zba" "zbb" "zbc" "zbs" are tested by hand The user manual of C908 from T-Head does not document it specifically. It just said it supports B extension V1.0. [2] I have tested it by using this [3] which attempts to execute "add.uw", "andn", "clmulr", "bclr" and they doesn't traps on K230. But on JH7110, "clmulr" and "bclr" will trap. - Support for "zicbom" is tested by hand Have tested with some out-of-tree drivers from [4] that need DMA and they do not come to the dts currently. - Support for "zicboz" is tested by hand Have tested with my own bare mental M-Mode program [5] which tries to use zicboz to clear a 64B aligned block and got output[6] shows it supports zicboz. - Cache parameters are inferred from T-Head docs [2] and Canaan docs [1] L1i: 32KB, VIPT 4-Way set-associative, 64B Cacheline L1d: 32KB, VIPT 4-Way set-associative, 64B Cacheline L2: 256KB, PIPT 16-way set-associative, 64B Cacheline The numbers of cache sets are calculated from these parameters. - MMU only supports Sv39 The T-Head docs [2] say the C908 core can be configured to support Sv48 and Sv39 or only Sv39. On K230, I tried to write "riscv,sv48" on mmu-type in dts and boot the mainline kernel. However, it failed during the kernel probe and fell back to Sv39. I also tested it on M-Mode software, writing Sv48 to satp.mode will not trap but will leave the CSR unchanged. While writing Sv39, it will take effect. It shows that this CPU does not support Sv48. - Svpbmt and T-Head MAEE both supported T-Head C908 does support both Svpbmt and T-Head MAEE for page-based memory attributes and is controlled by BIT(21) on CSR.MXSTATUS. The Svpbmt is used here for mainline kernel support for K230. If the kernel wants to use Svpbmt, the M-Mode software should unset BIT(21) of CSR.MXSTATUS before entering the S-Mode kernel. Otherwise, the kernel will not boot, as 0 on T-Head MAEE is NonCachable Memory. Once the kernel switches from bare metal to Sv39, It will lose dirty cache line modifications that haven't been written back to the memory. When compiling with sparse enabled (C=2), bitwise type warnings are triggered in the RISC-V KVM implementation. This occurs because the user-space data unboxing macro '__get_user_asm' performs implicit casting on restricted types without forcing the compiler's compliance. Additionally, raw 'unsigned long *' pointers are used to access the SBI NACL shared memory, whereas the RISC-V SBI specification mandates that these structures must follow little-endian byte ordering. Fix these by: 1. Adding a '__force' cast to '__get_user_asm()' to safely suppress implicit cast warnings during user-space data fetching. 2. Introducing the '__lelong' type macro, which dynamically resolves to '__le32' or '__le64' depending on XLEN, and replacing 'unsigned long *' with '__lelong *' to enforce proper compile-time endianness checks. The loop in clear_user_pages() iterates over all pages and calls clear_user_page() for each of them. During the loop "vaddr" is modified. However on sparc clear_user() is a macro which does not use "vaddr". The compiler sees a variable which is modified but never used and emits a warning for that: include/linux/highmem.h: In function 'clear_user_pages': include/linux/highmem.h:234:63: warning: parameter 'vaddr' set but not used [-Wunused-but-set-parameter=] static inline void clear_user_pages(void *addr, unsigned long vaddr, Other architectures use an inline function for clear_user_page() which avoids the warning. This is not possible on sparc, as sparc_flush_page_to_ram() is not yet declared where clear_user_page() is defined. Including cacheflush_32.h will trigger recursive and lots of other issues. So hide the warning with a cast to (void) instead. While we are here, do the same for copy_user_page(). A report from shashiko-bot highlighted some concerns concurrent to application of the series[1]. Fix duplicate pinctrl_tach{0-15} and pinctrl_n{cts,dcd,dsr,ri}5 labels in aspeed-g7-soc1-pinctrl.dtsi. These didn't cause errors from dtc because dtc accepts duplicate labels for duplicate nodes specified through a node reference[2]. Drop the cpu-index from secondary/tertiary container nodes: reduce the "#address-cells" from 2 to 1 and update unit-addresses and reg accordingly. The 2-cell scheme was proposed in an early mailing list sketch to prompt discussion[3], but the design evolved in ways that made it unnecessary. Also remove URL comments from the DTS. For pages which are donated to the Ultravisor for secure execution purposes the do_secure_storage_access() exception handler however does not handle such exceptions correctly. Such an exception may result in an endless exception loop which will never be resolved. An attempt to fix this [1] turned out to be not sufficient. For now revert load_unaligned_zeropad() until this problem has been resolved in a proper way. Note that the implementation of load_unaligned_zeropad() itself is correct. The revert is just a temporary workaround until there is complete fix for secure storage access exceptions. 2026-06-12KVM: x86/mmu: move pdptrs out of the MMUPaolo Bonzini
PDPTRs are part of the CPU state. A bit unconventionally, they are reached via vcpu->arch.walk_mmu instead of being stored in vcpu->arch directly. That is nice in principle---it would allow TDP shadow paging to have its own PDPTRs---but it is not necessary, because EPT has no PDPTRs and NPT does not cache them. Since kvm_pdptr_read does not otherwise need the MMU, drop the pdptrs from the MMU altogether. There is however something to be careful about, in that PDPTRs are now not stored separately in root_mmu and nested_mmu for L1 and L2 guests. In practice this was already not an issue: - for EPT the VMCS0x has to keep them up to date; and for the purpose of emulation they are always loaded from the VMCS on vmentry/vmexit, thanks to the clearing of dirty and available register bitmaps in vmx_switch_vmcs() - for NPT, VCPU_EXREG_PDPTR is similarly cleared for nNPT, which does not cache the PDPTRs; while for non-nNPT the PDPTRs are loaded together with the load of CR3. Note that page table PDPTRs are not affected, since they are stored in pae_root. 2026-06-12KVM: nSVM: invalidate cached PDPTRs across nested NPT transitionsPaolo Bonzini
When L2 runs under nested NPT and uses PAE paging, KVM's cached PDPTRs in mmu->pdptrs[] can hold stale or wrong values after nested transitions and across migration restore, because both nested_svm_load_cr3() and svm_get_nested_state_pages() only refresh PDPTRs on the !nested_npt path. The user-visible bug is on migration restore of an L2 running with nested NPT and 32-bit PAE paging, if userspace uses KVM_SET_SREGS rather than KVM_SET_SREGS2. In that case, load_pdptrs() leaves VCPU_EXREG_PDPTR marked as available, and kvm_pdptr_read() will use a stale translation that used L1 GPAs instead of L2 nGPAs. svm_get_nested_state_pages() runs on first KVM_RUN but skips the refresh because nested_npt_enabled() is true. The CPU itself reads L2's PDPTRs correctly from memory via L1's NPT, but KVM-side walking of guest PAE page tables uses the bogus cached values. Unlike Intel's GUEST_PDPTR0..3 fields in the VMCS, SVM has no VMCB-cached PDPTR state: the in-memory PDPTEs at the current CR3 are the only source of truth, and svm_cache_reg(VCPU_EXREG_PDPTR) simply reloads them from memory via load_pdptrs(). Clearing the avail bit (and the dirty bit because !avail/dirty is invalid) to force a reload when PDPTRs as needed fixes the bug. Do the same for nested_svm_load_cr3()'s nested_npt branch, so that the invariant "PDPTRs need reloading" is handled similarly for both immediate and deferred loading. The early vmwrite of the PDPTRs in prepare_vmcs02_rare() is redundant, because every write it does will be performed by prepare_vmcs02() if it is actually needed. In any case where the emulator or the processor need the PDPTR, either is_pae_paging() is true on vmentry, or a write of CR0, CR4 or EFER will cause a vmexit to L0. The next vmentry will refresh the PDPTRs in the vmcs02 from vmcs12. In fact, the original version[1] of what ended up being commit c7554efc8335 ("KVM: nVMX: Copy PDPTRs to/from vmcs12 only when necessary"), the writes in what is now prepare_vmcs02_rare() were removed. When the mega-collection of optimizations was posted[2], the removal of that code got dropped as a rebase good, so reinstate it. nested_mmu is always stored into vcpu->arch.walk_mmu at the same time as guest_mmu is stored into vcpu->arch.mmu. But nested_mmu is not even a proper MMU, it is only used for page walking; plus the fact that walk_mmu has to be switched at all is just an implementation detail. In the end what matters here is whether the guest is using nested page tables; vmx/nested.c and svm/nested.c check it to see if they are in nEPT or nNPT context respectively. So switch to checking root_mmu vs. guest_mmu, which is a more cogent test.
