2026-05-21LoongArch: Skip relocation-time KASLR if already appliedWANG Rui
When the kernel is relocated during early boot (efistub or kexec_file), a randomized load address may has already been selected and applied. In this case, performing KASLR again in relocate.c is unnecessary. Note: strictly-defined KASLR means the kernel's final runtime address has a random offset from the kernel's load address, which is implemented in relocate.c; broadly-defined KALSR means the kernel's final runtime address has a random offset from the kernel's link address (a.k.a. VMLINUX_LOAD_ADDRESS), which also include the efistlub implementation, kexec_file implementation and QEMU direct kernel boot. kaslr_disabled() return true only means strictly-defined KASLR is disabled. 2026-05-21efi/loongarch: Randomize kernel preferred address for KASLRWANG Rui
Introduce efi_get_kimg_kaslr_address() helper to compute the preferred kernel image load address dynamically when CONFIG_RANDOMIZE_BASE is enabled. The function derives a random offset by using the EFI-provided randomness combined with the timer tick value, and constrains it within CONFIG_RANDOMIZE_BASE_MAX_OFFSET. Update EFI_KIMG_PREFERRED_ADDRESS to call this helper so that the EFI stub can select a randomized load address when KASLR is active, while preserving the original base address behavior when KASLR is disabled or "nokaslr" is specified. Note: LoongArch can't KASLR for hibernation, so set efi_nokaslr to true if "resume=<devname>" is explicitly specified in cmdline. 2026-05-21ring-buffer: Flush and stop persistent ring buffer on panicMasami Hiramatsu (Google)
On real hardware, panic and machine reboot may not flush hardware cache to memory. This means the persistent ring buffer, which relies on a coherent state of memory, may not have its events written to the buffer and they may be lost. Moreover, there may be inconsistency with the counters which are used for validation of the integrity of the persistent ring buffer which may cause all data to be discarded. To avoid this issue, stop recording of the ring buffer on panic and flush the cache of the ring buffer's memory. 2026-05-21KVM: arm64: vgic-v2: Don't init the vgic on in-kernel interrupt injectionMarc Zyngier
We now have the lazy init on three paths: - on first run of a vcpu - on first injection of an interrupt from userspace and irqfd - on first injection of an interrupt from kernel space as part of the device emulation (timers, PMU, vgic MI) Given that we recompute the state of each in-kernel interrupt every time we are about to enter the guest, we can drop the lazy init from the kernel injection path. This solves a bunch of issues related to vgic_lazy_init() being called in non-preemptible context, such as vcpu reset. The timer code makes use of a per-timer irq level cache, which looks like a very minor optimisation to avoid taking a lock upon updating the GIC view of the interrupt when it is unchanged from the previous state. The userspace notification of interrupts is has a few problems: - it is utterly pointless - it is annoyingly split between detecting the need for notification and the population of the interrupts in the run structure We can't do anything about the former (yet), but the latter can be addressed. If we detect that we must notify userspace, we know that we are going to exit, as we populate the exit status. Which means we can also populate the interrupt state at this stage and be done with it. This simplifies the structure of the code. 2026-05-21KVM: arm64: nv: Don't save/restore FP register during a nested ERET or exceptionMarc Zyngier
When switching between L1 and L2, we save the old state using kvm_arch_vcpu_put(), mutate the state in memory, then load the new state using kvm_arch_vcpu_load(). Any live FPSIMD/SVE state is saved and unbound, such that it can be lazily restored on a subsequent trap. The FPSIMD/SVE state is shared by exception levels, and only a handful of related control registers need to be changed when transitioning between L1 and L2. The save/restore of the common state is needless overhead, especially as trapping becomes exponentially more expensive with nesting. Avoid this overhead by leaving the common FPSIMD/SVE state live on the CPU, and only switching the state that is distinct for L1 and L2: - the trap controls: the effective values are recomputed on each entry into the guest to take the EL into account and merge the L0 and L1 configuration if in a nested context, or directly use the L0 configuration in non-nested context (see __activate_traps()). - the VL settings: the effective values are are also recomputed on each entry into the guest (see fpsimd_lazy_switch_to_guest()). Since we appear to cover all bases, use the vcpu flags indicating the handling of a nested ERET or exception delivery to avoid the whole FP save/restore shenanigans. SME will have to be similarly dealt with when it eventually gets supported. For an EL1 L3 guest where L1 and L2 have this optimisation, this results in at least a 10% wall clock reduction when running an I/O heavy workload, generating a high rate of nested exceptions. 2026-05-20console: mdacon: remove this obsolete driverEthan Nelson-Moore
The mdacon driver supports using ISA MDA or Hercules-compatible display adapters as a secondary text console. This was commonly used in the 1990s and earlier for debugging software which took over the primary display. It is highly unlikely anyone is doing so nowadays because serial consoles and much better methods of debugging exist. The driver is not enabled by any defconfig, nor any of the dozens of distro configs collected at [1]. It has been relegated to VTs 13-16 since commit 0b9cf3aa6b1e ("mdacon messing up default vc's - set default to vc13-16 again") in Linux 2.6.27 (and before Linux 2.5.53 - see the link in the message of the above commit). The change in 2.6.27 was done because it was incorrectly detecting non-MDA adapters as MDA and taking over all VTs, rendering them unusable. Furthermore, vgacon supports using MDA/Hercules-compatible adapters as the primary text console, so any systems with only one of these adapters were already using vgacon and will not experience any loss in functionality from the removal of this driver. Given all of these factors, the mdacon driver is likely entirely unused. Remove it. The EX_DATA register is laid out such that EX_DATA_IMM occupied MSB. It's done to make sure that FIELD_GET() will sign-extend the IMM field during extraction. To enforce that, all EX_DATA masks are made signed integers. This works, but relies on the particular implementation of FIELD_GET(), i.e. masking then shifting, not vice versa; and the particular placement of the fields in the register. The Prism54 SPI driver hardcodes GPIO numbers and expects users to pass them as module parameters, apparently a relic from its life as a staging driver. This works because there is only one user, the Nokia N8x0 tablet. Convert this to the gpio descriptor interface and DT based probing to improve this and simplify the code at the same time. Add the Peripheral DMA (PDMA) controller node for the SpacemiT K3 SoC. The PDMA controller provides general-purpose DMA capabilities for various peripheral devices across the system to offload CPU data transfers. Unlike the previous K1 SoC, where some DMA masters had memory addressing limitations (e.g. restricted to the 0-4GB space) requiring a dedicated dma-bus with dma-ranges to restrict memory allocations, the K3 DMA masters have full memory addressing capabilities. Therefore, the PDMA node is now instantiated directly under the main soc bus. 2026-05-20s390/processor: Implement cpu_relax() with cpu serializationHeiko Carstens
There are many loops in the form of while (READ_ONCE(*somelocation)) cpu_relax(); Strictly speaking the architecture requires serialization instead of only a compiler barrier in the loop so the READ_ONCE() will see an updated value. However real hardware does not require this (see IBM z Systems Processor Optimization Primer - FAQ [1]), but it is still recommended to add serialization. Given that cpu_relax() is doing nothing useful, it does not hurt to add the single and fast instruction which makes sure that serialization happens, and such loops may be left a bit faster. 2026-05-20s390/topology: Use zero-based numbering for containing entitiesAlexandra Winter
Start the numbering scheme for higher-level topology structures (like socket, book, drawer) at zero, matching the convention for other hardware identifiers like e.g. CPU numbers. Hardware documentation, the Hardware Management Console and other tools like zmemtopo also use zero-based numbering for these containing entities. Aligning the numbering in sysfs, procfs, and tools like lscpu improves user experience by making it easier to correlate topology information across different interfaces. If available, Linux on s390 derives this physical topology information from the stsi function code 15 store_topology instruction, which is defined to start at 1 for the lowest numbered container id. Subtract one, so drawer_id, book_id and socket_id in cpu_topology[] start with 0 for the lowest numbered entity; and /proc/cpuinfo and tools like 'lscpu -ye' display the expected values. Display only, no functional change intended. This emulation currently erroneously starts id numbering at 0. A qemu fix is proposed that makes this emulation compliant to the stsi architecture. In case a guest with this patch is running on a qemu without the other fix, it can happen that ids of 255 are displayed erroneously. z/VM currently does not provide or emulate physical topology information to its guests. So this patch does not change anything for z/VM guests. The kvm_vgic_vcpu_init() failure path immediately above it has the same shape and still needs the same cleanup. Call kvm_vgic_vcpu_destroy() when kvm_vgic_vcpu_init() fails so private IRQs allocated before a redistributor iodev registration failure are released before the failed vCPU is freed. 2026-05-20KVM: arm64: vgic-its: Reject restored DTE with out-of-range num_eventid_bitsMichael Bommarito
Userspace can restore an ITS Device Table Entry whose Size field encodes more EventID bits than the virtual ITS supports. The live MAPD path rejects that state, but vgic_its_restore_dte() accepts it and stores the out-of-range value in dev->num_eventid_bits. Reject restored DTEs with num_eventid_bits > VITS_TYPER_IDBITS before allocating the device. This mirrors the MAPD check and prevents the restored state from reaching vgic_its_restore_itt(), where the unchecked value can be converted into an oversized scan_its_table() range. Enable the generic IRQ entry/exit infrastructure on PowerPC by selecting GENERIC_ENTRY and integrating the architecture-specific interrupt and syscall handlers with the generic entry/exit APIs. This change replaces PowerPC’s local interrupt entry/exit handling with calls to the generic irqentry_* helpers, aligning the architecture with the common kernel entry model. The macros that define interrupt, async, and NMI handlers are updated to use irqentry_enter()/irqentry_exit() and irqentry_nmi_enter()/irqentry_nmi_exit() where applicable also convert the PowerPC syscall entry and exit paths to use the generic entry/exit framework and integrating with the common syscall handling routines. Key updates include: - The architecture now selects GENERIC_ENTRY in Kconfig. - Replace interrupt_enter/exit_prepare() with arch_interrupt_* helpers. - Integrate irqentry_enter()/exit() in standard and async interrupt paths. - Integrate irqentry_nmi_enter()/exit() in NMI handlers. - Remove redundant irq_enter()/irq_exit() calls now handled generically. - Use irqentry_exit_cond_resched() for preemption checks. - interrupt.c and syscall.c are simplified to delegate context management and user exit handling to the generic entry path. - The new pt_regs field `exit_flags` introduced earlier is now used to carry per-syscall exit state flags (e.g. _TIF_RESTOREALL). - Remove unused code. This change establishes the necessary wiring for PowerPC to use the generic IRQ entry/exit framework while maintaining existing semantics.
