2026-08-24dma-buf: dma-heap: don't publish fd before copy_to_user() succeedsBaineng Shou
DMA_HEAP_IOCTL_ALLOC allocates a dma-buf and installs an fd into the caller's fd table via dma_buf_fd() -> fd_install() before dma_heap_ioctl() copies the result back to userspace. If the trailing copy_to_user() fails, userspace never learns the fd number, but the fd (and the underlying dma-buf reference) are already visible to other threads in the same process and are leaked for the lifetime of the process. The obvious "close it on the failure path" fix is unsafe: once fd_install() has run, another thread can already dup() the fd, send it via SCM_RIGHTS, or close() it and let its number be reused, so a subsequent close_fd() from the ioctl path can operate on an unrelated file. This was pointed out by Christian König on v1 [1]. Restructure the allocation path so that fd_install() is the last, unfailable step of a successful ioctl: 1. heap->ops->allocate() creates the dma_buf. 2. get_unused_fd_flags() reserves an fd number in the caller's fd table without publishing it, so no other thread can observe it. 3. copy_to_user() delivers the fd number to userspace; on failure the fd is returned with put_unused_fd() and the dma_buf reference is dropped with dma_buf_put(), leaving no user- visible state behind. 4. dma_buf_fd_install() publishes the fd and emits the trace_dma_buf_fd tracepoint -- from here on the ioctl cannot fail. A new dma_buf_fd_install() helper is introduced in dma-buf.c to wrap fd_install() together with the DMA_BUF_TRACE() call, preserving the export tracing that dma_buf_fd() provides. dma_heap_ioctl_allocate() is refactored to return the struct dma_buf * directly (returning ERR_PTR on failure) so the caller holds the dmabuf reference across steps 3 and 4. The failure at step 3 is easily reachable from userspace: pass a struct dma_heap_allocation_data that lives in a page whose protection is flipped to PROT_READ between copy_from_user() and copy_to_user() (e.g. via mprotect()). Before this change each such ioctl leaks one dmabuf fd; after it, the fd table is unchanged on failure and only /dev/dma_heap/<name> remains open. No UAPI or heap-driver interface change. 2026-08-24locking: Revert switching guards to _irq_{disable,enable}()Peter Zijlstra
Revert commit 1b0866874833 ("locking: Switch to _irq_{disable,enable}() variants in cleanup guards"). While the guards are properly nested, not all wrapped code is nice, as already highlighted by that fair.c hunk. Syzbot found another instance of this pattern in posix_timer_delete(), which does spin_unlock_irq()+spin_lock_irq() inside scoped_guard(spinlock_irq). Combined with this patch, that goes sideways most spectacular. Undo this until we've developed stronger tools / debug for such issues. 2026-08-24clocksource: hyper-v: Remove support for stimer interrupts in message modeMichael Kelley
In Hyper-V versions prior to WS2016/Win10, Hyper-V synthetic timers interrupt the guest by delivering a message that is initially handled by the Linux VMBus driver. Starting with WS2016/Win10, Hyper-V can deliver stimer interrupts directly to an assigned interrupt vector without involving the VMBus driver. This is called "Direct Mode". With the overall removal of Linux support for running on Hyper-V hosts earlier than WS2016 and Windows 10, it's no longer necessary to support the legacy message-based delivery. Remove that delivery mechanism and always use Direct Mode. If for some reason, the Hyper-V host does not enumerate Direct Mode, output an error message but continue to run using the LAPIC timer instead of an stimer. With these changes, the VMBus driver no longer calls the stimer interrupt service routine. This removal has a broader benefit in unblocking the disentangling of VMBus code and stimer code, as they should be independent of each other. 2026-08-24Drivers: hv: Remove support for WS2012/2012R2 & Win8/8.1 version of Hyper-VMichael Kelley
Linux code for running as a Hyper-V guest includes special cases for running on Hyper-V in WS2012/2012R2 and Windows 8/8.1. These versions were initially released 14 years ago, and official support ended in 2023 (unless a customer has contracted for extended security updates). Given the release of subsequent versions with improved functionality, there's no need to continue to support the latest Linux kernels on these versions of Hyper-V. If someone is running Linux on one of these older Hyper-V versions and doesn't want to upgrade, they can continue to do so as presumably they don't want upgrade the Linux version either. Simplify Linux code by removing special cases for running on these old versions of Hyper-V. Remove the negotiation of the VMBus protocol versions for WS2012/Win8, and remove special case code based on those VMBus protocol versions. Also update the balloon and snapshot drivers to no longer negotiate driver-specific protocol versions for these older Hyper-V versions, and remove any related special cases. 2026-08-24Drivers: hv: vmbus: Add vmbus_alloc_buffer()/vmbus_free_buffer() for CoCo VMsKameron Carr
On CoCo VMs without confidential VMBus, the netvsc send and receive buffers must be made host-visible by decrypting them. These buffers are vmalloc'ed, but set_memory_decrypted()/encrypted() do not work on vmalloc'ed memory. This use case is (so far) unique to netvsc, so solve it locally rather than changing the set_memory() or allocation APIs. Add vmbus_alloc_buffer()/vmbus_free_buffer() to the VMBus core. When the guest's isolation model requires it, allocate the buffer as a list of physically-contiguous chunks via alloc_pages_node(), starting at MAX_PAGE_ORDER and falling back to smaller orders so the allocation still succeeds under memory fragmentation. Each chunk is decrypted in place via set_memory_decrypted() on its direct-map address, and the chunks are then stitched into a single virtually-contiguous range with vmap(). Buffers that do not need decryption keep using vzalloc(). To free the buffer, vmbus_free_buffer() calls vunmap() on the range then re-encrypts and frees each chunk individually; any chunk that fails re-encryption is leaked to prevent accidentally freeing decrypted memory. This approach minimizes scattering of decrypted 4 KiB pages through the kernel direct map and the resulting shattering of large page mappings. syzbot reported KCSAN write-write races when two tasks concurrently update the same map value. Both accesses reach the ordinary memcpy() paths in bpf_obj_memcpy() through copy_map_value(). Unlocked in-place updates of published map values are intentionally not serialized and may produce torn values. Callers requiring consistency must provide synchronization appropriate for the map type. bpf_long_memcpy() already annotates the same behavior for long-aligned copies. Annotate the ordinary memcpy() sites in bpf_obj_memcpy() with data_race(), matching bpf_long_memcpy(). This documents the existing concurrency semantics and suppresses KCSAN reports for these intentional races without changing synchronization or map update behavior. 2026-08-22tcp: clamp route advmss to TCP_MIN_MSSYong Wang
tcp_select_initial_window() assumes that callers never pass an MSS smaller than 1, but route-derived advmss values can violate that assumption. A too-small explicit RTAX_ADVMSS is one way to get there, but it is not the only one. The same divide-by-zero can also be reached through the "default advmss" path when RTAX_ADVMSS is left at 0 and the effective advmss is later driven down by route MTU and min_adv_mss. Introduce a tcp_dst_advmss() helper that clamps route advmss to TCP_MIN_MSS before TCP consumes it, and use it in the TCP paths that derive advmss from dst metrics. This keeps the effective MSS from dropping to zero before tcp_select_initial_window() rounds the receive window. Relax btf_distill_func_proto() to accept a by-value struct or union that the R0:R2 convention added in earlier patches can carry: - a struct or union larger than 8 and up to 16 bytes, returned in the R0:R2 register pair, matching what LLVM emits for the BPF target; - a struct or union up to 8 bytes, returned in R0 alone. A >8 byte scalar (__int128) was already accepted and is unchanged. Everything else stays rejected: a return type larger than 16 bytes, and any type that __get_type_size() cannot return in registers at all (e.g. an array), which it already reports as ret < 0. btf_validate_return_type() is relaxed as well, so that it accepts a by-value struct or union up to 16 bytes in addition to void and scalars. With btf_distill_func_proto() and btf_validate_return_type() relaxed, the verifier, JIT, precision-backtracking and live-register support from the earlier patches becomes reachable: <=16 byte aggregate return values now work end to end. 2026-08-21bpf: Wire up JIT support for 16-byte kfunc returnsYonghong Song
LLVM 23 returns an __int128, or a struct/union larger than 8 bytes and no larger than 16 bytes, in the BPF R0:R2 register pair. The previous patch added the shared helpers describing that convention; wire up the JIT side so that the second half of the return value actually lands in R2. Placing the second return half into R2 is possible on any JIT, but it needs architecture-specific JIT work. Rather than requiring every JIT to implement it at once, add a bpf_jit_supports_kfunc_ret_reg_pair() capability, defaulting to false in the generic core; an architecture opts in once its JIT handles the R0:R2 pair, and the remaining ones are left for future work. Only the x86-64, arm64 and riscv64 JITs opt in so far. On arm64 and riscv64 the native second return register is already BPF R2 (x1 in bpf2a64[] and a1 in regmap[] respectively), so the upper half needs no move at all, unlike x86-64's RDX->RSI. The lower half is covered by the move into BPF R0 that those JITs already emit after every call, from x0 into x8 and from a0 into a5. This has been tested on x86-64 and arm64. The riscv64 path is expected to work by the same register-mapping reasoning as arm64 but has not been tested. bpf_add_kfunc_call() also rejects a kfunc that is marked KF_FASTCALL and returns more than 8 bytes. The bpf_fastcall contract implemented by mark_fastcall_pattern_for_call() assumes a call clobbers R0 plus the registers holding its arguments, so a return in the R0:R2 pair would clobber an R2 the caller expects the fastcall pattern to preserve. Such a kfunc is rejected with -EOPNOTSUPP as well. LLVM 23 added support for returning a value in two registers for an __int128, or a struct/union whose size is greater than 8 but not more than 16 bytes: such a value comes back in the R0:R2 register pair, with R2 holding the upper half. See LLVM patches [1] and [2]. Later patches teach the JIT, live register analysis and the verifier itself about that convention. They need to answer the same question: does this subprogram return its value in a register pair? Add bpf_ret_reg_pair() up front so it can be used in subsequent patches. It is answered from a per-subprogram flag that bpf_compute_subprog_ret_regs() derives once from the BTF prototype. jit_requested only says that the JIT is enabled, not that it succeeded: bpf_fixup_call_args() falls back to the interpreter when bpf_jit_subprogs() fails with anything other than -EFAULT. So jit_required is still set once the pair is modelled, which turns that fallback into a load failure rather than a silent divergence from what was verified. 2026-08-21bpf: Fix BPF_F_CPU validation for sparse CPU IDsHui Su
BPF_F_CPU stores the target CPU ID in the upper 32 bits of the map operation flags. bpf_map_check_op_flags() currently compares that ID with num_possible_cpus(), which is the number of possible CPUs rather than a bound on CPU IDs. On an arm64 QEMU guest with a CPU device-tree hole, the possible CPU mask was 0,2-3. A userspace program using raw bpf() syscalls creates a BPF_MAP_TYPE_PERCPU_ARRAY and performs update and lookup operations for each CPU by setting BPF_F_CPU and the CPU ID in the flags. With the old check, CPU 1 is incorrectly accepted while valid CPU 3 is rejected with -ERANGE. drm_gem_simple_kms_reset_shadow_plane() implements the reset_plane hook for simple-kms shadow-buffered planes. Since the reset hook conflates initial state creation with hardware and software reset during suspend/resume, convert it to the create_plane_state pattern. Replace it with drm_gem_simple_kms_create_shadow_plane_state(), which implements the create_plane_state hook using drm_gem_create_shadow_plane_state(). Update DRM_GEM_SIMPLE_DISPLAY_PIPE_SHADOW_PLANE_FUNCS accordingly. Create __drm_gem_shadow_plane_state_init() to initialize a pre-allocated shadow plane state, and drm_gem_create_shadow_plane_state() to allocate and initialize one from scratch. 2026-08-21drm/simple-kms: Add create_plane_state hookMaxime Ripard
The simple-kms helper provides a reset_plane hook to let drivers override the default plane reset. However, the reset hook is overloaded: it is used to create the initial software state at probe time, but also to reset both the hardware and software state during suspend/resume. These two roles have different expectations, and reset is not fallible which makes error handling difficult. The atomic_create_state pattern was introduced to untangle this by providing a hook that only allocates and initializes a pristine state without any side effect. Add a create_plane_state hook to struct drm_simple_display_pipe_funcs. When provided, drm_simple_kms_plane_reset() will use it to allocate a fresh state, falling back to reset_plane and then to the default drm_atomic_helper_plane_reset(). This will allow simple-kms drivers to be converted to the atomic_create_state pattern. 2026-08-21nsfs: keep namespace tree fields stable until after RCU grace periodJérémy Jean
struct ns_common overlays struct ns_tree with the rcu_head used by kfree_rcu(). That lets the deferred-free machinery overwrite ns_id and __ns_ref_active as soon as a namespace is queued for freeing, even though nsfs tree walkers may still read those fields under RCU after ns_tree_remove(). KASAN reports slab UAF. Keep the tree state and deferred-free callback storage separate. Namespace tree readers can then continue to validate and take references until the grace period has elapsed.
