2026-04-20KVM: selftests: Drop "vaddr_" from APIs that allocate memory for a given VMSean Christopherson
Now that KVM selftests use gva_t instead of vm_vaddr_t, drop "vaddr_" from the core memory allocation APIs as the information is extraneous and does more harm than good. E.g. the APIs don't _just_ allocate virtual memory, they allocate backing physical memory and install mappings in the guest page tables. And as proven by kmalloc() and malloc(), developers generally expect that allocations come with a working virtual address. Opportunistically clean up the function comment for vm_alloc(), and drop the misleading and superfluous comments for its wrappers. No functional change intended. 2026-04-20sched_ext: add p->scx.tid and SCX_OPS_TID_TO_TASK lookupTejun Heo
BPF schedulers that can't hold task_struct pointers (arena-backed ones in particular) key tasks by pid. During exit, pid is released before the task finishes passing through scheduler callbacks, so a dying task becomes invisible to the BPF side mid-schedule. scx_qmap hits this: an exiting task's dispatch callback can't recover its queue entry, stalling dispatch until SCX_EXIT_ERROR_STALL. Add a unique non-zero u64 p->scx.tid assigned at fork that survives the full task lifetime including exit. scx_bpf_tid_to_task() looks up the task; unlike bpf_task_from_pid(), it handles exiting tasks. The lookup costs an rhashtable insert/remove under scx_tasks_lock, so root schedulers opt in via SCX_OPS_TID_TO_TASK. Sub-schedulers that set the flag to declare a dependency are rejected at attach if root didn't opt in. scx_qmap converted: keys tasks by tid and enables SCX_OPS_ENQ_EXITING. Pre-patch it stalls within seconds under a non-leader-exec workload; with the patch it runs cleanly. v3: Warn on rhashtable_lookup_insert_fast() failure via new scx_tid_hash_insert() helper (Cheng-Yang Chou). v2: Guard scx_root deref in scx_bpf_tid_to_task() error path. 2026-04-20selftests/bpf: Fix off-by-one in bpf_cpumask_populate related selftestMatt Bobrowski
The test_populate test uses >= instead of > when checking if the runtime nr_cpus exceeds the bit capacity of a cpumask_t. On a system where the physical CPU core count perfectly matches the CONFIG_NR_CPUS upper bound (e.g. nr_cpus = 512 and CONFIG_NR_CPUS = 512), the condition nr_cpus >= CPUMASK_TEST_MASKLEN * 8 evaluates to true (512 >= 512). This incorrectly causes the test to fail with an error value of 3. A 512-bit cpumask_t provides enough bits (indices 0 through 511) to represent 512 CPUs. The subsequent bpf_for(i, 0, nr_cpus) loop iterates up to nr_cpus - 1 (511), which perfectly aligns with the maximum valid index of the bitmask. Change the condition to nr_cpus > CPUMASK_TEST_MASKLEN * 8 to fix the false positive failure on these systems. 2026-04-19bpf: Refactor dynptr mutability trackingAmery Hung
Redefine dynptr mutability and fix inconsistency in the verifier and kfunc signatures. Dynptr mutability is at two levels. The first is the bpf_dynptr structure and the second is the memory the dynptr points to. The verifer currently tracks the mutability of the bpf_dynptr struct through helper and kfunc prototypes, where "const struct bpf_dynptr *" means the structure itself is immutable. The second level is tracked in upper bit of bpf_dynptr->size in runtime and is not changed in this patch. There are two type of inconsistency in the verfier regarding the mutability of the bpf_dynptr struct. First, there are many existing kfuncs whose prototypes are wrong. For example, bpf_dynptr_adjust() mutates a dynptr's start and offset but marks the argument as a const pointer. At the same time many other kfuncs that does not mutate the dynptr but mark themselves as mutable. Second, the verifier currently does not honor the const qualifier in kfunc prototypes as it determines whether tagging the arg_type with MEM_RDONLY or not based on the register state. Since all the verifier care is to prevent CONST_PTR_TO_DYNPTR from being destroyed in callback and global subprogram, redefine the mutability at the bpf_dynptr level to just bpf_dynptr_kern->data. Then, explicitly prohibit passing CONST_PTR_TO_DYNPTR to an argument tagged with MEM_UNINIT or OBJ_RELEASE. The mutability of a dynptr's view is not really interesting so drop MEM_RDONLY annotation for dynptr from the helpers and kfuncs. Plus, if the mutability of the entire bpf_dynptr were to be done correctly, it would kill the bpf_dynptr_adjust() usage in callback and global subporgram. Implementation wise - First, make sure all kfunc arg are correctly tagged: Tag the dynptr argument of bpf_dynptr_file_discard() with OBJ_RELEASE. - Then, in process_dynptr_func(), make sure CONST_PTR_TO_DYNPTR cannot be passed to argument tagged with MEM_UNINIT or OBJ_RELEASE. For MEM_UNINIT, it is already checked by is_dynptr_reg_valid_uninit(). For OBJ_RELEASE, check against OBJ_RELEASE instead of MEM_RDONLY and drop a now identical check in unmark_stack_slots_dynptr(). - Remove the mutual exclusive check between MEM_UNINIT and MEM_RDONLY, but don't add a MEM_UNINIT and OBJ_RELEASE version as it is obviously wrong. Note that while this patch stops following the C semantic for the mutability of bpf_dynptr, the prototype of kfuncs are still fixed to maintain the correct C semantics in the implementation. Adding or removing the const qualifier does not break backward compatibility. In addition, fix kfuncs dropping the const qualifier when casting the opaque bpf_dynptr to bpf_dynptr_kern. In test_kfunc_dynptr_param.c, initialize dynptr to 0 to avoid -Wuninitialized-const-pointer warning. 2026-04-19libbpf: Report error when a negative kprobe offset is specifiedAaron Tomlin
In attach_kprobe(), the parsing logic uses sscanf() to extract the target function name and offset from the section definition. Currently, if a user specifies a negative offset (e.g., SEC("kprobe/func+-100")), the input is not explicitly caught and reported as an error. This commit updates the logic to explicitly notify the user when a negative integer is provided. To facilitate this check, the offset variable is changed from unsigned long to long so that sscanf() can accurately capture a negative input for evaluation. If a negative offset is detected, the loader will now print an informative warning stating that the offset must be non-negative, and return -EINVAL. Additionally, free(func) is called in this new error path to prevent a memory leak, as the function name string is dynamically allocated by sscanf(). charge_reserved_hugetlb.sh tears down background writers with killall from psmisc. Minimal Ubuntu images do not always provide that tool, so the selftest fails in cleanup for an environment reason rather than for the hugetlb behavior it is trying to cover. Skip the test when killall is unavailable, similar to the existing root check, so these environments report the dependency clearly instead of failing the test. 2026-04-18selftests/mm: move write_file helper to vm_utilChunyu Hu
thp_settings provides write_file() helper for safely writing to a file and exit when write failure happens. It's a very low level helper and many sub tests need such a helper, not only thp tests. split_huge_page_test also defines a write_file locally. The two have minior differences in return type and used exit api. And there would be conflicts if split_huge_page_test wanted to include thp_settings.h because of different prototype, making it less convenient. It's possisble to merge the two, although some tests don't use the kselftest infrastrucutre for testing. It would also work when using the ksft_exit_msg() to exit in my test, as the counters are all zero. Several HMM tests hardcode TWOMEG as the THP size. This is wrong on architectures where the PMD size is not 2MB such as arm64 with 64K base pages where THP is 512MB. Fix this by using read_pmd_pagesize() from vm_util instead. While here also replace the custom file_read_ulong() helper used to parse the default hugetlbfs page size from /proc/meminfo with the existing default_huge_page_size() from vm_util. 2026-04-18selftests/mm: skip hugetlb_dio tests when DIO alignment is incompatibleLi Wang
hugetlb_dio test uses sub-page offsets (pagesize / 2) to verify that hugepages used as DIO user buffers are correctly unpinned at completion. However, on filesystems with a logical block size larger than half the page size (e.g., 4K-sector block devices), these unaligned DIO writes are rejected with -EINVAL, causing the test to fail unexpectedly. Add get_dio_alignment() to query the filesystem's required DIO alignment via statx(STATX_DIOALIGN) and skip individual test cases whose file offset or write size is not a multiple of that alignment. Aligned cases continue to run so the core coverage is preserved. Commit 2697dd8ae721 ("mm/mseal: update VMA end correctly on merge") fixed an issue in the loop which iterates through VMAs applying mseal, which was triggered by mseal()'ing a range of VMAs where the second was mseal()'d and the first mergeable with it, once mseal()'d. Add a regression test to assert that this behaviour is correct. We place it in the merge selftests as this is strictly an issue with merging (via a vma_modify() invocation). It also asserts that mseal()'d ranges are correctly merged as you'd expect. The test is implemented such that it is skipped if mseal() is not available on the system. When a task calls migrate_disable(), p->cpus_ptr is not updated until migrate_disable_switch() runs during context switch, so dispatch_to_cpu() may dequeue such a task and dispatch it to a CPU it cannot run on. Extend the mismatch check in dispatch_to_cpu() to also test is_migration_disabled() alongside the cpumask check, so tasks in this window are bounced to the fallback DSQ. 2026-04-17selftests: Fix duplicated test number reportingMark Brown
Commit 2964f6b816c2 ("selftests: Use ktap helpers for runner.sh") converted the prints in runner.sh to use the relevant helpers from ktap_helpers.sh, not modifying any of the strings printed in the process. This included converting all the result reports to use the relevant ktap_test_ function. Since the output was originally KTAP compliant the strings reported for test names now include test numbers: ok 59 59 selftests: arm64: syscall-abi instead of the expected format: ok 59 selftests: arm64: syscall-abi which causes result parsers to interpret the second number as part of the test name. Given the use of the helpers the tracking of test numbers by runner.sh is now redundant, remove it entirely to restore the expected output format. Stop updating it on open - Show ENUM names in function arguments via BTF in function tracing When showing the function arguments when func-args option is set for function tracing, if one of the arguments is found to be an enum, show the name of the enum instead of its number - Add new trace_call__##name() API for tracepoints Tracepoints are enabled via static_branch() blocks, where when not enabled, there's only a nop that is in the code where the execution will just skip over it. When tracing is enabled, the nop is converted to a direct jump to the tracepoint code. Sometimes more calculations are required to be performed to update the parameters of the tracepoint. In this case, trace_##name##_enabled() is called which is a static_branch() that gets enabled only when the tracepoint is enabled. This allows the extra calculations to also be skipped by the nop: if (trace_foo_enabled()) { x = bar(); trace_foo(x); } Where the x=bar() is only performed when foo is enabled. The problem with this approach is that there's now two static_branch() calls. One for checking if the tracepoint is enabled, and then again to know if the tracepoint should be called. The second one is redundant Introduce trace_call__foo() that will call the foo() tracepoint directly without doing a static_branch(): if (trace_foo_enabled()) { x = bar(); trace_call__foo(); } - Update various locations to use the new trace_call__##name() API - Move snapshot code out of trace.c Cleaning up trace.c to not be a "dump all", move the snapshot code out of it and into a new trace_snapshot.c file - Clean up some "%*.s" to "%*s" - Allow boot kernel command line options to be called multiple times Have options like: ftrace_filter=foo ftrace_filter=bar ftrace_filter=zoo Equal to: ftrace_filter=foo,bar,zoo - Fix ipi_raise event CPU field to be a CPU field The ipi_raise target_cpus field is defined as a __bitmask(). 2026-04-17selftests: ovpn: serialize YNL listener startupRalf Lici
Starting one background YNL notification listener per peer back-to-back can intermittently stall the test setup before the listeners even reach the Python main function. This was reproducible in a reduced test.sh setup-only loop: a single listener stayed stable across repeated runs, while starting listeners for all peers could hang early in the listener launch phase. Adding a short delay between listener launches makes the listeners start cleanly and eliminates the reproduced hangs in repeated normal and slow-runner tests. Serialize listener startup with a small sleep between setup_listener calls.
