test_maps fails in the sockmap test because sockmap_verdict_prog.c
drops the packet when the first 8 bytes are not directly accessible:
if (data + 8 > data_end)
return SK_DROP;
The blamed commit removed bpf_skb_pull_data() from the stream parser
program so that the parser no longer modifies the skb. That was needed,
but it also removed an implicit side effect: bpf_skb_pull_data()
linearized enough of the skb for later direct packet access.
In this test, the send side goes through the sockmap SK_MSG path. The
skb can have skb->len == 20 while its linear area is empty, so the
verdict program sees data == data_end and drops the packet even though
the payload length is sufficient.
Keep the parser read-only, and pull the first 8 bytes in the verdict
program before reading or writing them. Reload data/data_end after
bpf_skb_pull_data() as required.

The mptcpify BPF prog upgrades eligible TCP sockets to MPTCP, but only
when the socket type is exactly SOCK_STREAM. Its update_socket_protocol()
hook runs on the raw type from userspace, before the socket core masks
it with SOCK_TYPE_MASK, so the type may still carry SOCK_CLOEXEC or
SOCK_NONBLOCK in its upper bits and the equality check fails.
As a result, a socket(AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM | SOCK_CLOEXEC, 0) -- what
common libraries do by default -- is silently left as plain TCP. This
was hit in practice with curl. Since mptcpify.c is referenced as example
code for enabling MPTCP transparently, the same mistake is likely to be
copied into real deployments where it fails the same way and is hard to
diagnose.
Mask the type before comparing, mirroring the socket core. Extend the
test to also create the server with SOCK_CLOEXEC set; the same masking
is applied to start_server_addr() so a flagged type still listens.

Adding BPF_OBJ_GET_INFO_BY_FD support for tracing_multi links.
We expose following tracing_multi link data:
- attach_type of the program
- number of ids
- array of BTF ids
- array of its related kernel addresses
- array of cookies
The change follows the kprobe_multi and uprobe_multi link-info convention
of optional output arrays with an in/out count,
On top of standard tracing link data we also expose addresses, because they
are useful info for user (especially when the attachment was done via pattern).
This data is hidden when kallsyms does not allow exposing kernel pointer values.

Add a regression test for the out-of-bounds bit operations on
struct mt_device.mt_io_flags.
A HID multitouch device can advertise a ContactCountMaximum far larger
than the number of contacts a single report describes, up to 255. The
driver used to keep the per-slot active state in the bits of a single
unsigned long and index set_bit()/clear_bit() by the slot number, so such
a device drove those operations out of bounds. The sticky-fingers release
timer made it fatal: mt_release_contacts() cleared one bit per slot and
overwrote the adjacent members of struct mt_device.
The new device advertises a ContactCountMaximum of 250 while exposing only
a few finger collections (a large contact count cannot be expressed with
one finger collection per contact within the HID descriptor size limit).
The test sends a single contact and lets the 100ms sticky-fingers timer
release it. A kernel without the fix panics in mt_release_contacts(); a
fixed kernel reports the release cleanly.

When lookup element from those per-CPU maps, which have special field
in their values and their value size is not equal to roundup(value_sz, 8),
the padding size of temporary non-zeroed kernel heap memory allocated by
kvmalloc should not be exposed to user space.

get_map_kv_btf() caches the vmlinux BTF object when a map uses
btf_vmlinux_value_type_id. map dump released that object when the
command completed, but left the global pointer stale.
The same cached object can also be returned to print_key_value(), which
freed it directly. That leaves btf_vmlinux dangling before the command
cleanup path runs.
Use free_map_kv_btf() for per-entry cleanup, and reset the cached
btf_vmlinux pointer when the map command releases the object. This keeps
batch mode from reusing a freed BTF object.

Commit 9080b97689db ("bpftool: Pass host flags to bootstrap libbpf")
started building the bootstrap libbpf with HOST_CFLAGS, stripping the
warning options that are unsuitable for that build by filtering out
-W -Wall -Wextra -Wformat -Wformat-signedness.
HOST_CFLAGS inherits EXTRA_WARNINGS, which includes -Wformat-security
and -Wformat-y2k. The filter drops -Wall and -Wformat (the latter being
what actually enables -Wformat), but leaves those two -Wformat-* children
in LIBBPF_BOOTSTRAP_CFLAGS. Building the bootstrap libbpf with it then
warns:

The warning is easy to miss in an in-tree build: tools/lib/bpf/Makefile
re-adds -Wall via "override CFLAGS += -Wall", which re-enables -Wformat
for the libbpf objects, so only libbpf's feature-detection probe (which
uses the passed CFLAGS verbatim) leaks the two warnings. The standalone
libbpf Makefile (github.com/libbpf/libbpf, used by the bpftool mirror)
instead uses "CFLAGS ?= ... -Wall", which the passed-in CFLAGS overrides,
so -Wall is never re-added and every bootstrap object warns.
Use a -Wformat% wildcard in the filter-out so the orphaned children are
removed together with the parent.

Add a regression test for the fsuidgid_has_mapping() check in
vfs_tmpfile(). It idmaps a detached tmpfs mount so that the
caller-visible id range [0, 10000) maps onto the on-disk range
[10000, 20000) and checks that:
- a caller whose fsuid/fsgid fall outside that range cannot create an
O_TMPFILE through the mount and gets -EOVERFLOW instead of an inode
owned by (uid_t)-1;
- a mapped caller can create an O_TMPFILE, link it into the namespace,
and the ownership round-trips through the mount idmap: it is reported
as 0 through the mount and stored as 10000 on the underlying tmpfs.
The test runs entirely as root and uses setfsuid()/setfsgid() to become
the unmapped caller, so it needs no helper user. The layer directory is
world-writable so that an unmapped caller still clears the directory
permission check and reaches the fsuidgid_has_mapping() test.

Add a HID-BPF regression check for hid_bpf_get_data() requests whose
size would overflow when added to the offset.
The new rdesc fixup callback asks for offset 2 and size ~0ULL, then
records whether the helper returns NULL. A vulnerable kernel returns a
non-NULL pointer because the runtime check wraps the addition. A fixed
kernel rejects the request. The callback records the helper result
without dereferencing any returned pointer.
The callback reports the helper result through BSS and returns 0
intentionally. hid_rdesc_fixup return values are consumed as report
descriptor fixup results, so a positive test-result value would be
interpreted as a replacement report descriptor size.
Also add KHDR_INCLUDES to the HID selftest build so hid_bpf.c sees the
current kernel UAPI HID definitions on systems whose installed headers do
not provide enum hid_report_type.

The HID selftest skeleton contains several struct_ops maps, but each test
usually wants to load only the programs named by that test.
load_programs() disabled auto-attach for all maps, but left struct_ops
autocreate enabled. libbpf can enable autoload for programs referenced by
autocreated struct_ops maps, so an unrelated program can be loaded and fail
even when the current test does not use it.
Disable autocreate for all struct_ops maps by default, then re-enable it
only for the maps selected by the test before loading the skeleton.

query_nic_features() detects which offloads depend on tx-gso-partial
by enabling everything, turning tx-gso-partial off, and seeing which
active features drop out. Enabling all hw features is dangerous:
we may end up enabling rx-fcs and loopback for example. For the
ice driver we end up getting into problems with feature dependencies
so the cleanup isn't successful either, and the test exits with
rx-fcs and loopback enabled.
Scope the feature probing just to segmentation bits.

The JUnit XML output correctly captures the stderr/stdout output of failed
tests inside the <failure> element. However, for skipped tests, the output
was completely discarded and the XML only received a self-closing <skipped
message="reason"/> tag.
This expands the <skipped> element to include the test's err_output when
available, which is extremely helpful for debugging why a test was skipped
(e.g. diagnosing missing prerequisites or unexpected environment states
that triggered the skip) directly from CI systems parsing the XML report.

Optimize the execution of the metric validation and metric listing shell
test suites:
1. `stat_metrics_values.sh`:
The Python metric validator runs the `perf bench futex hash` workload
for each validated metric relationship. Reduce the benchmark runtime
limit from `-r 2` (2 seconds) to `-r 1` (1 second). This cuts the
workload duration in half while still generating sufficient PMU events
to satisfy non-zero threshold metric validations.
2. `stat_all_metrics.sh`:
The metric checking test runs `perf stat` sequentially across all
433+ listed metrics. Change the default workload for system-wide runs
from `sleep 0.01` to `true`. This avoids the 10ms sleep delay on each
sequential metric invocation, saving over 4 seconds of total wall
time during full test suite runs.

The lock contention analysis test suite (`lock_contention.sh`) performs a
series of 13 separate profiling checks to verify various aggregation and
filtering parameters of `perf lock contention`. Each of these checks runs
the `perf bench sched messaging` messaging benchmark as its workload.
By default, `sched messaging` runs 10 groups of 40 processes (400
processes total) generating substantial task scheduling, context
switching, and IPC message passing. When traced system-wide for lock
events, the tracing overhead (handling millions of lock acquisitions and
releases) slows execution down significantly, causing the test suite to
take over 80 seconds.
Optimize this by introducing a scaled-down messaging benchmark workload:
`perf bench sched messaging -g 1 -p`. Running 1 group (40 processes) takes
only 0.01 seconds natively (instead of 0.08 seconds), drastically reduces
the sheer volume of lock acquire/release trace events, and reduces CPU
context switching during tracing while still generating sufficient lock
events to fully exercise the BPF/record filters.

The off-cpu profiling test suite runs multiple recording commands with a
default workload of `sleep 1` to test the off-cpu threshold configurations
(specifically, above 999ms and below 1200ms). This adds a mandatory 3.0
seconds of sleep overhead.
Optimize this by scaling down the thresholds and workload durations by a
factor of 10:
- Use `sleep 0.1` as the workload duration.
- Change the above-threshold test to use `--off-cpu-thresh 50` and `sleep
0.1`.
- Change the below-threshold test to use `--off-cpu-thresh 500` and `sleep
0.1`.
- Update the awk period check in the above-threshold test to look for a
period greater than 50,000,000 ns (50ms) instead of 999,000,000 ns
(999ms).
This reduces raw test sleep overhead from 3.0s down to 0.3s, yielding a
~2.7 second speedup for this test.

The branch stack sampling test (test 130) runs short iteration-based
workloads to verify syscall, kernel, and trap branch stack sampling.
Specifically, `test_syscall()` and `test_kernel_branches()` run `perf
bench syscall basic` with loop counts of 8000 and 1000, and
`test_trap_eret_branches()` runs `traploop` with 1000 iterations.
Because these loop limits are extremely small, the total benchmark
runtimes last only a few milliseconds (or less). Under high load,
virtualization, or coarse sampling conditions, PMU cycle sampling fails to
capture enough samples inside the brief benchmark loops. This leads to
false negatives where the script output lacks the expected syscall,
kernel, or trap branch entries (e.g. "ERROR: Branches missing getppid[^
]*/SYSCALL/").
Fix this by increasing the workload loop counts to 100,000 across all
three test sections. Running 100,000 loops still finishes virtually
instantaneously (less than 0.1 seconds), but generates enough iterations
to guarantee robust branch stack capture.

The `perf stat --bpf-counters test` fails intermittently on hybrid
architectures or systems with dynamic frequency scaling (DVFS). This
happens because the test workload (`sqrtloop`) runs for a fixed 1-second
duration, and the CPU frequency can scale dynamically between idle and
maximum frequency. As the first run runs on a cold CPU and the second run
runs on a warmed-up CPU (or vice versa), the number of instructions
executed in 1 second differs by up to 2.2x, violating the comparison
tolerance.
Also, when running as root, BPF tracepoints and scheduling programs
trigger frequently. Since standard `perf stat -e instructions` measures
both user and kernel space instructions, it counts BPF helper and program
execution overheads, whereas the BPF counters themselves do not self-
measure. This introduces a large kernel-space instruction count
discrepancy between standard and BPF counters.
Fix these issues by:
1. Switching the workload to a strictly deterministic, iteration-based
workload: `awk 'BEGIN { for (i=0; i<10000000; i++) sum+=i }'`. We pin
the
workload to a single random allowed CPU using `taskset -c $CPU` via a
bash array.
2. Restricting the counted event to user-space only (`instructions:u` or
`/u`).
3. Tightening the comparison tolerance from 20% to 15%.
These modifications isolate the measurements to user-space instructions of
the deterministic loop, which executes a virtually identical number of
instructions on both runs (with less than 0.001% variation), eliminating
Dynamic Frequency Scaling (DVFS), kernel scheduling noise, and BPF helper
self-measurement overheads.

The `perf trace record and replay` test fails intermittently on slow or
virtualized hosts because the default recording workload (`sleep 1`)
occasionally completes without scheduling the target `nanosleep` or
`clock_nanosleep` system calls inside the recorded sample window,
resulting in the error: `Failed: cannot find *nanosleep syscall`.
Generalize the `perf_record_with_retry` helper in
`tests/shell/lib/perf_record.sh` to support a custom record command prefix
via the `PERF_RECORD_CMD` environment variable (defaulting to "perf
record").
Update `trace_record_replay.sh` to use this robust retry loop running with
`PERF_RECORD_CMD="perf trace record"` and a base workload of `sleep`. The
test will automatically retry with scaled sleep durations (from 0.01s up
to 2.0s) until the required `nanosleep` event is successfully captured.

The `python profiling with jitdump` test failed due to:
1. Target PID extraction resolving to duplicate space-separated values,
which broke the buildid-cache loops.
2. The default workload duration being too short to capture JIT stack
trampoline samples, resulting in 0 matching JIT symbols.
Fix the PID parsing by sorting and retrieving a unique single-line value.
Implement a robust retry loop starting at 1M python loop iterations and
scaling up to 100M iterations until JIT symbols are successfully captured
and verified.

The metrics value validation test requires system-wide recording (`-a`),
which can fail on systems without root permissions or where paranoid
levels restrict tracing. Add a check to skip the test if `-a` is not
supported.
Also fix false negatives during validation by updating parse error string
patterns and resolving issues in metric list generation.

Introduce `perf_record_with_retry` and `perf_record_cleanup` in a shared
library `tests/shell/lib/perf_record.sh` to prevent record test failures
caused by transient recording or workload delays.
Update `record.sh`, `record_lbr.sh`, `pipe_test.sh`, `kvm.sh`, and
`stat_all_pfm.sh` to use this robust record retry logic. These tests now
start with very short durations (e.g. 0.01 seconds) and scale up if the
initial recording failed to capture samples, significantly improving test
execution speed on success while remaining resilient to slow systems.

Currently, the noploop and thloop workloads only support sleep durations
in integer seconds because they parse the argument using atoi() and use
alarm() for timer signaling.
To support much shorter execution times in tests (speeding up test suites
and allowing faster retries), change the input parsing to use atof() for
double floating-point seconds. Use ualarm() for fractional durations less
than 1.0 seconds, and fall back to alarm() for durations of 1.0 second or
more.

The parallel test harness uses the carriage return delete escape sequence
`PERF_COLOR_DELETE_LINE` ("\033[A\33[2K\r") to erase and update the
"Running (X active)" progress lines.
However, if a test description is longer than the terminal width, the line
wraps around. When this happens, the cursor up escape sequence `\033[A`
only moves the cursor to the last wrapped row, leaving the top half of the
description printed on the previous line. This leads to name duplication
and output corruption spilling over multiple rows on consoles narrower
than the maximum description length (e.g., 101 columns wide).
Fix this by dynamically querying the terminal width using
`get_term_dimensions` and truncating the printed test descriptions using
the `%-*.*s` printf format. We reserve 35 characters for prefix, status,
and spacing metrics to guarantee the progress line never wraps.

Commit b1c5efbfd92e ("perf parse-events: Remove hard coded legacy hardware
and cache parsing") introduced a bypass to PMU filtering to prevent uncore
PMUs from being filtered out during event parsing, which was required for
resolving `duration_time` and `uncore_freq` when running with `--cputype`.
However, this bypass was active whenever `pmu_filter` was set, which also
incorrectly bypassed filtering for the `--pmu-filter` option.
Introduce a `cputype_filter` boolean flag in `parse_events_state` and
`parse_events_option_args` to distinguish filtering initiated by
`--cputype` from that initiated by `--pmu-filter`. Restrict the core-only
check in `parse_events__filter_pmu()` to when `cputype_filter` is true.

The second loop for per_pidcommd is meaningful only when it doesn't have
from and to tasks. Also make sure c->Y is set before copying the comm

The backtrace was used by sched-switch and sched-wakeup only. No need
to call cat_backtrace() in the process_sample_event(). Let's pass NULL
backtrace and generate it from the sched events.
As it needs a pointer to the 'machine', let's save the session in the
timechart struct and use the host machine of the session instead of
passing the pointer to all handlers. It should be fine to assume the
host machine as timechart command doesn't deal with guest machines and
there's no way to get tracepoints from the guest events.

means the event type is always PERF_RECORD_SAMPLE. We don't need to

The UMEM state refactor made __send_pkts() use xsk->umem for Tx
address generation. At the same time, the shared-UMEM Tx setup copies the
Rx UMEM state into a Tx-local state object and resets base_addr and
next_buffer before configuring the Tx socket.
Passing that Tx-local object to xsk_configure() makes xsk->umem point to
the zero-based Tx allocator state. This breaks the BIDIRECTIONAL test once
the roles are switched: the same socket is then used for Rx validation, but
received descriptors from the other logical UMEM half are checked against
base_addr == 0. With the new UMEM bounds check, a valid address such as
base_addr + XDP_PACKET_HEADROOM is rejected as being outside the UMEM
window.
Keep xsk->umem as the shared/Rx UMEM view used for socket configuration
and Rx validation. Use the ifobject-local UMEM copy only for Tx descriptor
address generation, preserving the BIDIRECTIONAL test's intent of using
the proper logical UMEM half after the direction switch.

The python metrics code used in places like ilist.py passes a
pmu-filter of "default_core" on non-hybrid x86/ARM/.. systems. As a
PMU like "cpu" isn't a literal name match then no PMU matches
"default_core" and the events fail to parse for the metric. Fix the
name matching and PMU lookup for "default_core" and check that it
fixes ilist.py.

We always used 5 sec as the default command timeout. But soon after
it was introduced, David effectively made us ignore the timeout
(it was passed to process.communicate() as the wrong argument).
Gal recently fixed that, but turns out the 5 sec is not enough
for a lot of tests and setups. The fix caused regressions.
In particular running reconfig commands (e.g. XDP attach) on mlx5
with 32 rings and 9k MTU, on a heavily-debug-enabled kernel takes
more than 5 sec. The XDP installation command will time out after
5 sec but since the sleeps in the kernel are non interruptible
the command finishes anyway, leaving the XDP program attached,
but with non-zero exit code. defer()ed cleanups are not installed,
breaking the environment for subsequent tests.
Since "install XDP" is a pretty normal command a "point fix"
does not seem appropriate. 32 rings is a fairly reasonable
config, too, so we should just increase the timeout to 20 sec.
There's no real reason behind the value of 20.

Link to the uuid library as part of libvfio.mk instead of as only linking
it via VFIO selftests' Makefile, as the whole point of providing libvfio.mk
is to allow linking the VFIO library functionality into KVM selftests,
without KVM selftests having to know the gory details or duplicate code.

Set rc = -ENOMEM at every platform_device_alloc() failure site in
cxl_rch_topo_init(), cxl_single_topo_init() and cxl_test_init() so the
failure is propagated and the module load aborts cleanly.
The cxl_acpi allocation site originates in the commit below, while the
host-bridge/root-port/uport/dport allocation sites fixed here were added
later in the single-host and RCH topology configs.

The test case 'perf test aslr' fails on s390. The root cause of the
failure is subtest test_callchain_aslr. This test invokes command
# ./perf record -g -e task-clock:u -o /tmp/perf-test-aslr \
-- perf test -w noploop 3
to generate a call stack using event task-clock:u. On s390 this defaults
to '--call-graph dwarf' whereas on x86_64 this defaults to framepointer
(fp) format. The command
# ./perf inject --aslr -i /tmp/perf-test-aslr
now scans all SAMPLE entries recorded in the perf.data file to convert
possible addresses. This is done in aslr_tool__process_sample() looking
at sample_type bits PERF_SAMPLE_IP, PERF_SAMPLE_TID,
PERF_SAMPLE_TIME, PERF_SAMPLE_PERIOD, PERF_SAMPLE_CALLCHAIN,
PERF_SAMPLE_REGS_USER and PERF_SAMPLE_STACK_USER.
On s390 the samples do not contain FP entries
of type PERF_SAMPLE_CALLCHAIN (the bit is set in sample_type, but the
number of FP entries is 0).
The processing enters the PERF_SAMPLE_STACK_USER portion where the
data is copied to the newly constructed sample and then aborted with
this warning:

With command line option '--call-graph dwarf' the new output file
does not contain any samples at all. This leads to a missing $new_addr
value in the shell script and a failure.
Fix this and skip this subtest. Emit a hint that this subtest is
currently unsupported on all platform when option --call-graph dwarf
is selected.
Since one subtest is skipped, the complete test is reported as
skipped.

The macro kvm_trace_symbol_exit is used for providing the mappings
for the exit trap vectors and their names. Add mappings for H_FAC_UNAVAIL
and H_VIRT so that exit reasons are displayed as string instead of
vector numbers when using perf kvm stat.

The powerpc-hcalls.py script currently prints hypercall
statistics in a fixed sort order based on the number of
hcall occurrences, making it difficult to analyze hcalls
from different execution characteristics.
Add support for runtime-configurable sorting so users
can order hypercall statistics by count, minimum
latency, maximum latency, or average latency using
a --sort option.
Parse arguments through sys.argv to support perf script
argument passing semantics.
