2025-09-02check_for_nsfs_mounts(): no need to take locksAl Viro
Currently we are taking mount_writer; what that function needs is either mount_locked_reader (we are not changing anything, we just want to iterate through the subtree) or namespace_shared and a reference held by caller on the root of subtree - that's also enough to stabilize the topology. The thing is, all callers are already holding at least namespace_shared as well as a reference to the root of subtree. Let's make the callers provide locking warranties - don't mess with mount_lock in check_for_nsfs_mounts() itself and document the locking requirements. 2025-09-02btrfs: fix subvolume deletion lockup caused by inodes xarray raceOmar Sandoval
There is a race condition between inode eviction and inode caching that can cause a live struct btrfs_inode to be missing from the root->inodes xarray. Specifically, there is a window during evict() between the inode being unhashed and deleted from the xarray. If btrfs_iget() is called for the same inode in that window, it will be recreated and inserted into the xarray, but then eviction will delete the new entry, leaving nothing in the xarray: Thread 1 Thread 2 --------------------------------------------------------------- evict() remove_inode_hash() btrfs_iget_path() btrfs_iget_locked() btrfs_read_locked_inode() btrfs_add_inode_to_root() destroy_inode() btrfs_destroy_inode() btrfs_del_inode_from_root() __xa_erase In turn, this can cause issues for subvolume deletion. Specifically, if an inode is in this lost state, and all other inodes are evicted, then btrfs_del_inode_from_root() will call btrfs_add_dead_root() prematurely. If the lost inode has a delayed_node attached to it, then when btrfs_clean_one_deleted_snapshot() calls btrfs_kill_all_delayed_nodes(), it will loop forever because the delayed_nodes xarray will never become empty (unless memory pressure forces the inode out). We saw this manifest as soft lockups in production. Fix it by only deleting the xarray entry if it matches the given inode (using __xa_cmpxchg()). The compressed bio will only have an extent map of range [0, 32K), but the original bio passed in is for the whole 64K folio. This will cause the decompression part to only fill the first 32K, leaving the rest untouched (aka, filled with zero). This incorrect compressed read merge leads to the above data corruption. There were similar problems that happened in the past, commit 808f80b46790 ("Btrfs: update fix for read corruption of compressed and shared extents") is doing pretty much the same fix for readahead. But that's back to 2015, where btrfs still only supports bs (block size) == ps (page size) cases. This means btrfs_do_readpage() only needs to handle a folio which contains exactly one block. Only btrfs_readahead() can lead to a read covering multiple blocks. Thus only btrfs_readahead() passes a non-NULL @prev_em_start pointer. With v5.15 kernel btrfs introduced bs < ps support. This breaks the above assumption that a folio can only contain one block. Now btrfs_read_folio() can also read multiple blocks in one go. But btrfs_read_folio() doesn't pass a @prev_em_start pointer, thus the existing bio force submission check will never be triggered. In theory, this can also happen for btrfs with large folios, but since large folio is still experimental, we don't need to bother it, thus only bs < ps support is affected for now. [FIX] Instead of passing @prev_em_start to do the proper compressed extent check, introduce one new member, btrfs_bio_ctrl::last_em_start, so that the existing bio force submission logic will always be triggered. 2025-09-02btrfs: accept and ignore compression level for lzoCalvin Owens
The compression level is meaningless for lzo, but before commit 3f093ccb95f30 ("btrfs: harden parsing of compression mount options"), it was silently ignored if passed. After that commit, passing a level with lzo fails to mount: BTRFS error: unrecognized compression value lzo:1 It seems reasonable for users to expect that lzo would permit a numeric level option, as all the other algos do, even though the kernel's implementation of LZO currently only supports a single level. Because it has always worked to pass a level, it seems likely to me that users in the real world are relying on doing so. This patch restores the old behavior, giving "lzo:N" the same semantics as all of the other compression algos. To be clear, silly variants like "lzo:one", "lzo:the_first_option", or "lzo:armageddon" also used to work. This isn't meant to suggest that any possible mis-interpretation of mount options that once worked must continue to work forever. This is an exceptional case where it makes sense to preserve compatibility, both because the mis-interpretation is reasonable, and because nothing tangible is sacrificed. Finally update btrfs_show_options() to ignore the level of LZO, as it is only the default level without any extra meaning. 2025-09-02btrfs: fix squota compressed stats leakBoris Burkov
The following workload on a squota enabled fs: btrfs subvol create mnt/subvol # ensure subvol extents get accounted sync btrfs qgroup create 1/1 mnt btrfs qgroup assign mnt/subvol 1/1 mnt btrfs qgroup delete mnt/subvol # make the cleaner thread run btrfs filesystem sync mnt sleep 1 btrfs filesystem sync mnt btrfs qgroup destroy 1/1 mnt will fail with EBUSY. The reason is that 1/1 does the quick accounting when we assign subvol to it, gaining its exclusive usage as excl and excl_cmpr. But then when we delete subvol, the decrement happens via record_squota_delta() which does not update excl_cmpr, as squotas does not make any distinction between compressed and normal extents. Thus, we increment excl_cmpr but never decrement it, and are unable to delete 1/1. The two possible fixes are to make squota always mirror excl and excl_cmpr or to make the fast accounting separately track the plain and cmpr numbers. The latter felt cleaner to me so that is what I opted for. 2025-09-02procfs: add "pidns" mount optionAleksa Sarai
Since the introduction of pid namespaces, their interaction with procfs has been entirely implicit in ways that require a lot of dancing around by programs that need to construct sandboxes with different PID namespaces. Being able to explicitly specify the pid namespace to use when constructing a procfs super block will allow programs to no longer need to fork off a process which does then does unshare(2) / setns(2) and forks again in order to construct a procfs in a pidns. So, provide a "pidns" mount option which allows such users to just explicitly state which pid namespace they want that procfs instance to use. This interface can be used with fsconfig(2) either with a file descriptor or a path: fsconfig(procfd, FSCONFIG_SET_FD, "pidns", NULL, nsfd); fsconfig(procfd, FSCONFIG_SET_STRING, "pidns", "/proc/self/ns/pid", 0); or with classic mount(2) / mount(8): // mount -t proc -o pidns=/proc/self/ns/pid proc /tmp/proc mount("proc", "/tmp/proc", "proc", MS_..., "pidns=/proc/self/ns/pid"); As this new API is effectively shorthand for setns(2) followed by mount(2), the permission model for this mirrors pidns_install() to avoid opening up new attack surfaces by loosening the existing permission model. In order to avoid having to RCU-protect all users of proc_pid_ns() (to avoid UAFs), attempting to reconfigure an existing procfs instance's pid namespace will error out with -EBUSY. Creating new procfs instances is quite cheap, so this should not be an impediment to most users, and lets us avoid a lot of churn in fs/proc/* for a feature that it seems unlikely userspace would use. 2025-09-02fuse: remove fuse_readpages_end() null mapping checkJoanne Koong
Remove extra logic in fuse_readpages_end() that checks against null folio mappings. This was added in commit ce534fb05292 ("fuse: allow splice to move pages"): "Since the remove_from_page_cache() + add_to_page_cache_locked() are non-atomic it is possible that the page cache is repopulated in between the two and add_to_page_cache_locked() will fail. 2025-09-02fuse: allow synchronous FUSE_INITMiklos Szeredi
FUSE_INIT has always been asynchronous with mount. That means that the server processed this request after the mount syscall returned. This means that FUSE_INIT can't supply the root inode's ID, hence it currently has a hardcoded value. There are other limitations such as not being able to perform getxattr during mount, which is needed by selinux. To remove these limitations allow server to process FUSE_INIT while initializing the in-core super block for the fuse filesystem. This can only be done if the server is prepared to handle this, so add FUSE_DEV_IOC_SYNC_INIT ioctl, which a) lets the server know whether this feature is supported, returning ENOTTY othewrwise. b) lets the kernel know to perform a synchronous initialization The implementation is slightly tricky, since fuse_dev/fuse_conn are set up only during super block creation. This is solved by setting the private data of the fuse device file to a special value ((struct fuse_dev *) 1) and waiting for this to be turned into a proper fuse_dev before commecing with operations on the device file. 2025-09-01copy_process: pass clone_flags as u64 across calltreeSimon Schuster
With the introduction of clone3 in commit 7f192e3cd316 ("fork: add clone3") the effective bit width of clone_flags on all architectures was increased from 32-bit to 64-bit, with a new type of u64 for the flags. However, for most consumers of clone_flags the interface was not changed from the previous type of unsigned long. While this works fine as long as none of the new 64-bit flag bits (CLONE_CLEAR_SIGHAND and CLONE_INTO_CGROUP) are evaluated, this is still undesirable in terms of the principle of least surprise. Thus, this commit fixes all relevant interfaces of callees to sys_clone3/copy_process (excluding the architecture-specific copy_thread) to consistently pass clone_flags as u64, so that no truncation to 32-bit integers occurs on 32-bit architectures. 2025-09-01fs: rework iput logicJosef Bacik
Currently, if we are the last iput, and we have the I_DIRTY_TIME bit set, we will grab a reference on the inode again and then mark it dirty and then redo the put. This is to make sure we delay the time update for as long as possible. We can rework this logic to simply dec i_count if it is not 1, and if it is do the time update while still holding the i_count reference. Then we can replace the atomic_dec_and_lock with locking the ->i_lock and doing atomic_dec_and_test, since we did the atomic_add_unless above. 2025-08-31hfs: clear offset and space out of valid records in b-tree nodeViacheslav Dubeyko
Currently, hfs_brec_remove() executes moving records towards the location of deleted record and it updates offsets of moved records. However, the hfs_brec_remove() logic ignores the "mess" of b-tree node's free space and it doesn't touch the offsets out of records number. Potentially, it could confuse fsck or driver logic or to be a reason of potential corruption cases. This patch reworks the logic of hfs_brec_remove() by means of clearing freed space of b-tree node after the records moving. And it clear the last offset that keeping old location of free space because now the offset before this one is keeping the actual offset to the free space after the record deletion. If allocated memory contains only zeros, then everything will work pretty fine. But if the allocated memory contains the "garbage", then it can affect the bitmap operations and it triggers the reported issue. This patch simply exchanges the kmalloc() on kzalloc() with the goal to guarantee the correctness of bitmap operations. Because, newly created allocation bitmap should have all available blocks free. Potentially, initialization bitmap's read operation could not fill the whole allocated memory and "garbage" in the not initialized memory will be the reason of volume coruptions and file system driver bugs. 2025-08-31hfs: make proper initalization of struct hfs_find_dataViacheslav Dubeyko
Potenatially, __hfs_ext_read_extent() could operate by not initialized values of fd->key after hfs_brec_find() call: static inline int __hfs_ext_read_extent(struct hfs_find_data *fd, struct hfs_extent *extent, u32 cnid, u32 block, u8 type) { int res; hfs_ext_build_key(fd->search_key, cnid, block, type); fd->key->ext.FNum = 0; res = hfs_brec_find(fd); if (res && res != -ENOENT) return res; if (fd->key->ext.FNum != fd->search_key->ext.FNum || fd->key->ext.FkType != fd->search_key->ext.FkType) return -ENOENT; if (fd->entrylength != sizeof(hfs_extent_rec)) return -EIO; hfs_bnode_read(fd->bnode, extent, fd->entryoffset, sizeof(hfs_extent_rec)); return 0; } This patch changes kmalloc() on kzalloc() in hfs_find_init() and intializes fd->record, fd->keyoffset, fd->keylength, fd->entryoffset, fd->entrylength for the case if hfs_brec_find() has been found nothing in the b-tree node. As a result, fd->key could be compared with fd->search_key. But hfsplus_find_init() uses kmalloc() for fd->key and fd->search_key allocation: int hfs_find_init(struct hfs_btree *tree, struct hfs_find_data *fd) { <skipped> ptr = kmalloc(tree->max_key_len * 2 + 4, GFP_KERNEL); if (!ptr) return -ENOMEM; fd->search_key = ptr; fd->key = ptr + tree->max_key_len + 2; <skipped> } Finally, fd->key is still not initialized if hfs_brec_find() has found nothing. This patch changes kmalloc() on kzalloc() in hfs_find_init() and intializes fd->record, fd->keyoffset, fd->keylength, fd->entryoffset, fd->entrylength for the case if hfs_brec_find() has been found nothing in the b-tree node. This patch adds proper validation of both offset and length before use, preventing out-of-bounds page access. Move is_bnode_offset_valid and check_and_correct_requested_length to hfsplus_fs.h, as they may be required by other functions. 2025-08-31ksmbd: allow a filename to contain colons on SMB3.1.1 posix extensionsPhilipp Kerling
If the client sends SMB2_CREATE_POSIX_CONTEXT to ksmbd, allow the filename to contain a colon (':'). This requires disabling the support for Alternate Data Streams (ADS), which are denoted by a colon-separated suffix to the filename on Windows. This should not be an issue, since this concept is not known to POSIX anyway and the client has to explicitly request a POSIX context to get this behavior. 2025-08-29f2fs: Use allocate_section_policy to control write priority in multi-devices ↵Liao Yuanhong
setups Introduces two new sys nodes: allocate_section_hint and allocate_section_policy. The allocate_section_hint identifies the boundary between devices, measured in sections; it defaults to the end of the device for single storage setups, and the end of the first device for multiple storage setups. The allocate_section_policy determines the write strategy, with a default value of 0 for normal sequential write strategy. A value of 1 prioritizes writes before the allocate_section_hint, while a value of 2 prioritizes writes after it. This strategy addresses the issue where, despite F2FS supporting multiple devices, SOC vendors lack multi-devices support (currently only supporting zoned devices). As a workaround, multiple storage devices are mapped to a single dm device. Both this workaround and the F2FS multi-devices solution may require prioritizing writing to certain devices, such as a device with better performance or when switching is needed due to performance degradation near a device's end. For scenarios with more than two devices, sort them at mount time to utilize this feature. When using this feature with a single storage device, it has almost no impact. However, for configurations where multiple storage devices are mapped to the same dm device using F2FS, utilizing this feature can provide some optimization benefits. Therefore, I believe it should not be limited to just multi-devices usage.
