2026-08-11Bluetooth: virtio_bt: Fix use-after-free and memory leak in probe error pathsZhaoJinming
When virtbt_open_vdev() fails in virtbt_probe(), hci_free_dev(hdev) is called without first calling hci_unregister_dev(hdev). Since hci_register_dev() already succeeded, the HCI device remains registered while its memory is freed, leading to a use-after-free when accessed via sysfs or HCI sockets. Additionally, the probe function leaks the virtio_bluetooth structure (vbt) in several error paths: - When virtio_find_vqs() fails, vbt is not freed. - When hci_alloc_dev() or hci_register_dev() fails, vbt is not freed. - When virtbt_open_vdev() fails, vbt is not freed. Furthermore, when virtbt_open_vdev() fails after virtio_device_ready() has been called, the device is left live (DRIVER_OK set) while its virtqueues are torn down, and any scheduled work is not flushed, potentially allowing a use-after-free from device-initiated callbacks. Fix all of these by restructuring the error labels to properly unwind in reverse order of the allocation/registration sequence. The new labels err_del_vqs and err_free_vbt ensure that del_vqs and kfree(vbt) are called as appropriate for each failure point. For the virtbt_open_vdev() failure path, call virtio_reset_device() and virtbt_close_vdev() before unregistering the HCI device, matching the cleanup pattern in virtbt_remove(). 2026-08-07Bluetooth: virtio_bt: avoid OOB read of build info stringHyeongJun An
The virtbt_setup_zephyr() sends the Zephyr vendor command 0xfc08 (Read Build Information) and hands the response to bt_dev_info() and hci_set_fw_info() as a "%s" string starting at skb->data + 1, without checking the length. A backend that answers with status only leaves that pointer past the end of the received data, so the walk reads adjacent slab memory until it meets a NUL. Those bytes reach the kernel log and the firmware-info debugfs file. To fix this, print the string with a bounded "%.*s" limited to skb->len - 1. A short or unterminated response then prints as much as arrived instead of failing setup. This mirrors commit dd068ef04412 ("Bluetooth: bpa10x: avoid OOB read of revision string in bpa10x_setup()"), which fixed the identical pattern. 2026-05-06Bluetooth: virtio_bt: validate rx pkt_type header lengthMichael Bommarito
virtbt_rx_handle() reads the leading pkt_type byte from the RX skb and forwards the remainder to hci_recv_frame() for every event/ACL/SCO/ISO type, without checking that the remaining payload is at least the fixed HCI header for that type. After the preceding patch bounds the backend-supplied used.len to [1, VIRTBT_RX_BUF_SIZE], a one-byte completion still reaches hci_recv_frame() with skb->len already pulled to 0. If the byte happened to be HCI_ACLDATA_PKT, the ACL-vs-ISO classification fast-path in hci_dev_classify_pkt_type() dereferences hci_acl_hdr(skb)->handle whenever the HCI device has an active CIS_LINK, BIS_LINK, or PA_LINK connection, reading two bytes of uninitialized RX-buffer data. The same hazard exists for every packet type the driver accepts because none of the switch cases in virtbt_rx_handle() check skb->len against the per-type minimum HCI header size before handing the frame to the core. After stripping pkt_type, require skb->len to cover the fixed header size for the selected type (event 2, ACL 4, SCO 3, ISO 4) before calling hci_recv_frame(); drop ratelimited otherwise. Unknown pkt_type values still take the original kfree_skb() default path. Use bt_dev_err_ratelimited() because both the length and pkt_type values come from an untrusted backend that can otherwise flood the kernel log. 2026-05-06Bluetooth: virtio_bt: clamp rx length before skb_putMichael Bommarito
virtbt_rx_work() calls skb_put(skb, len) where len comes directly from virtqueue_get_buf() with no validation against the buffer we posted to the device. The RX skb is allocated in virtbt_add_inbuf() and exposed to virtio as exactly 1000 bytes via sg_init_one(). Checking len against skb_tailroom(skb) is not sufficient because alloc_skb() can leave more tailroom than the 1000 bytes actually handed to the device. A malicious or buggy backend can therefore report used.len between 1001 and skb_tailroom(skb), causing skb_put() to include uninitialized kernel heap bytes that were never written by the device. The same path also accepts len == 0, in which case skb_put(skb, 0) leaves the skb empty but virtbt_rx_handle() still reads the pkt_type byte from skb->data, consuming uninitialized memory. Define VIRTBT_RX_BUF_SIZE once and reuse it in alloc_skb() and sg_init_one(), and gate virtbt_rx_work() on that same constant so the bound checked matches the buffer actually exposed to the device. Reject used.len == 0 in the same gate so an empty completion can no longer reach virtbt_rx_handle(). Use bt_dev_err_ratelimited() because the length value comes from an untrusted backend that can otherwise flood the kernel log. Same class of bug as commit c04db81cd028 ("net/9p: Fix buffer overflow in USB transport layer"), which hardened the USB 9p transport against unchecked device-reported length. This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) 2022-12-12Bluetooth: virtio_bt: fix device removalMichael S. Tsirkin
Device removal is clearly out of virtio spec: it attempts to remove unused buffers from a VQ before invoking device reset. To fix, make open/close NOPs and do all cleanup/setup in probe/remove. NB: This is a hacky way to handle this - virtbt_{open,close} as NOP is not really what a driver is supposed to be doing. These are transport enable/disable callbacks from the BT core towards the driver. It maps to a device being enabled/disabled by something like bluetoothd for example. So if disabled, users expect that no resources/queues are in use. It does work with all other transports like USB, SDIO, UART etc. There should be no buffer used if the device is powered off. We also don’t have any USB URBs in-flight if the transport is not active. The way to implement a proper fix would be using vq reset if supported, or even using a full device reset. The cost of the hack is a single skb wasted on an unused bt device. NB2: with this fix in place driver still suffers from a race condition if an interrupt triggers while device is being reset. To fix, in the virtbt_close() callback we should deactivate all interrupts.
