The virtual PCI driver registers an ntb_dev but has no remove callback. Unbinding the endpoint function can therefore free BARs while the NTB device and its client still use them. It also leaves the virtual PCI devices and root bus allocated. Allocate an ntb_dev for each virtual PCI probe and unregister it from the matching remove callback. Start command processing only after registration. Publish the device for doorbell IRQs at the same point. During remove, stop the command work and drain IRQ handlers before unregistering the device. Retain the root bus returned by pci_scan_bus() so it can be removed on unbind. Unregister the virtual PCI driver before releasing endpoint resources. Stop and remove the root bus under the PCI rescan/remove lock, then release its host bridge. 2026-09-03PCI: endpoint: pci-epf-vntb: Pass PF/VF number when BAR programmingKoichiro Den
vntb_epf_mw_set_trans() programs the memory-window BAR through pci_epc_set_bar() with hardcoded function numbers (0, 0), so the BAR lands on the wrong function whenever the vNTB EPF is bound to anything but PF0. The other BAR programming sites in the vNTB driver already pass the EPF's own numbers. Pass the EPF's own func_no/vfunc_no here as well. 2026-06-23PCI: endpoint: pci-epf-vntb: Implement .db_vector_count()/mask() for doorbellsKoichiro Den
Implement .db_vector_count() and .db_vector_mask() so NTB core/clients can map doorbell events to per-vector work and avoid the thundering-herd behavior. pci-epf-vntb reserves two slots in db_count: slot 0 for link events and slot 1 which is historically unused. Therefore the number of doorbell vectors is (db_count - 2). Report vectors as 0..N-1 and return BIT_ULL(db_vector) for the corresponding doorbell bit. Build db_valid_mask from a validated vector count so out-of-range db_count values cannot create invalid shifts. 2026-06-23PCI: endpoint: pci-epf-vntb: Exclude reserved slots from db_valid_maskKoichiro Den
In pci-epf-vntb, db_count represents the total number of doorbell slots exposed to the peer, including: - slot #0 reserved for link events, and - slot #1 historically unused (kept for compatibility). Only the remaining slots correspond to actual doorbell bits. The current db_valid_mask() exposes all slots as valid doorbells. Limit db_valid_mask() to the real doorbell bits by returning BIT_ULL(db_count - 2) - 1, and guard against db_count < 2. 2026-06-22PCI: endpoint: pci-epf-vntb: Guard configfs writes after EPC attachKoichiro Den
db_count controls how many doorbell slots are allocated and exposed. It is also used by the doorbell mask helpers. After an EPC has been attached, changing it from configfs can leave runtime paths using a different count than the one used to set up the doorbell resources. Reject db_count writes after EPC attach, and reject values outside MIN_DB_COUNT..MAX_DB_COUNT before attach. Now that MIN_DB_COUNT documents the usable doorbell floor, use it in the store path too. While at it, apply the same after-attach guard to the other vNTB configfs knobs. BAR choices, spad_count, memory-window counts and sizes, and the virtual PCI IDs are also consumed during bind, so changing them later at runtime is meaningless and unsafe. Return -EOPNOTSUPP for after-attach writes. The value itself may be valid, but changing it in that state is not supported. 2026-06-22PCI: endpoint: pci-epf-vntb: Reject unusable doorbell countsKoichiro Den
pci-epf-vntb reserves slot 0 for link events and keeps slot 1 unused for legacy layout compatibility. A db_count smaller than MIN_DB_COUNT leaves no usable doorbell slot after those reservations. Reject such configurations when configuring interrupts. While at it, move MAX_DB_COUNT next to MIN_DB_COUNT. They are used as a pair in the range check, and keeping them together makes the valid doorbell range easier to read. 2026-06-22PCI: endpoint: pci-epf-vntb: Report 0-based doorbell vector via ntb_db_event()Koichiro Den
ntb_db_event() expects the vector number to be relative to the first doorbell vector starting at 0. pci-epf-vntb reserves vector 0 for link events and uses higher vector indices for doorbells. By passing the raw slot index to ntb_db_event(), it effectively assumes that doorbell 0 maps to vector 1. However, because the host uses a legacy slot layout and writes doorbell 0 into the third slot, doorbell 0 ultimately appears as vector 2 from the NTB core perspective. Adjust pci-epf-vntb to: - skip the unused second slot, and - report doorbells as 0-based vectors (DB#0 -> vector 0). This change does not introduce a behavioral difference until .db_vector_count()/.db_vector_mask() are implemented, because without those callbacks NTB clients effectively ignore the vector number. 2026-06-22PCI: endpoint: pci-epf-vntb: Defer pci_epc_raise_irq() out of atomic contextKoichiro Den
The NTB .peer_db_set() callback may be invoked from atomic context. pci-epf-vntb currently calls pci_epc_raise_irq() directly, but pci_epc_raise_irq() may sleep (it takes epc->lock). Avoid sleeping in atomic context by coalescing doorbell bits into an atomic64 pending mask and raising MSIs from a work item. Limit the amount of work per run to avoid monopolizing the workqueue under a doorbell storm. Clear stale pending bits before enabling the work item and after disabling it during cleanup. Also mask requested doorbells against the currently valid doorbell mask before queueing work, and iterate the pending u64 with __ffs64() so high doorbell bits are handled correctly. 2026-06-22PCI: endpoint: pci-epf-vntb: Document legacy MSI doorbell offsetKoichiro Den
vntb_epf_peer_db_set() raises an MSI interrupt to notify the RC side of a doorbell event. pci_epc_raise_irq(..., PCI_IRQ_MSI, interrupt_num) takes a 1-based MSI interrupt number. The ntb_hw_epf driver reserves MSI #1 for link events, so doorbells would naturally start at MSI #2 (doorbell bit 0 -> MSI #2). However, pci-epf-vntb has historically applied an extra offset and mapped doorbell bit 0 to MSI #3. This matches the legacy behavior of ntb_hw_epf and has been preserved since commit e35f56bb0330 ("PCI: endpoint: Support NTB transfer between RC and EP"). This offset has not surfaced as a functional issue because: - ntb_hw_epf typically allocates enough MSI vectors, so the off-by-one still hits a valid MSI vector, and - ntb_hw_epf does not implement .db_vector_count()/.db_vector_mask(), so client drivers such as ntb_transport effectively ignore the vector number and schedule all QPs. Correcting the MSI number would break interoperability with peers running older kernels. Document the legacy offset to avoid confusion when enabling per-db-vector handling. 2026-03-17PCI: endpoint: pci-epf-test: Roll back BAR mapping when subrange setup failsKoichiro Den
When the BAR subrange mapping test on DWC-based platforms fails due to insufficient free inbound iATU regions, pci_epf_test_bar_subrange_setup() returns an error (-ENOSPC) but does not restore the original BAR mapping. This causes subsequent test runs to become confusing, since the failure may leave room for the next subrange mapping test to pass. Fix this by restoring the original BAR mapping when preparation of the subrange mapping fails, so that no side effect remains regardless of the test success or failure. pci_epf_mhi_edma_read() and pci_epf_mhi_edma_write() start DMA operations and wait for completion with a timeout. On successful completion, they previously returned the remaining timeout, which callers may treat as an error. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) 2026-01-29PCI: endpoint: pci-epf-test: Add BAR subrange mapping test supportKoichiro Den
Extend pci-epf-test so that pci_endpoint_test can exercise BAR subrange mapping end-to-end. Add BAR_SUBRANGE_SETUP/CLEAR commands that program (and tear down) a simple 2-subrange layout for a selected BAR. The endpoint deliberately permutes the physical backing regions (swap the halves) and writes a deterministic signature byte per subrange. This allows the RC to verify that the submap order is actually applied, not just that reads/writes work with an identity mapping. Advertise CAP_SUBRANGE_MAPPING only when the underlying EPC supports dynamic_inbound_mapping and subrange_mapping. Also bump the default BAR sizes (BAR0-4) to 128 KiB so that split subranges are large enough to satisfy common inbound-translation alignment constraints. E.g. for DWC EP, the default and maximum CX_ATU_MIN_REGION_SIZE is 64 kB, so 128 KiB is sufficient for DWC-based EP platforms for 2-subrange testing. 2025-12-29PCI: Add WQ_PERCPU to alloc_workqueue() usersMarco Crivellari
Currently work items enqueued by schedule_delayed_work() use "system_wq" (a per-CPU wq), while queue_delayed_work() uses WORK_CPU_UNBOUND (used when a CPU is not specified). The same applies to schedule_work() that is using system_wq and queue_work(), that makes use again of WORK_CPU_UNBOUND. This lack of consistency cannot be addressed without refactoring the API. alloc_workqueue() treats all queues as per-CPU by default, while unbound workqueues must opt-in via WQ_UNBOUND. This default is suboptimal: most workloads benefit from unbound queues, allowing the scheduler to place worker threads where they're needed and reducing noise when CPUs are isolated. This continues the effort to refactor workqueue APIs, which began with the introduction of new workqueues and a new alloc_workqueue() flag in: 128ea9f6ccfb ("workqueue: Add system_percpu_wq and system_dfl_wq") 930c2ea566af ("workqueue: Add new WQ_PERCPU flag") Add WQ_PERCPU to explicitly request alloc_workqueue() to be per-CPU when WQ_UNBOUND has not been specified. With the introduction of the WQ_PERCPU flag (equivalent to !WQ_UNBOUND), any alloc_workqueue() caller that doesn't explicitly specify WQ_UNBOUND must now use WQ_PERCPU. Once migration is complete, WQ_UNBOUND can be removed and unbound will become the implicit default. Otherwise, the driver would rely on the kthread. It is going to be used as the-best-effort approach for an experimental nbcon netconsole driver, see https://lore.kernel.org/r/20251121-nbcon-v1-2-503d17b2b4af@debian.org Note that a safe .write_atomic() callback is supposed to work in NMI context. But some networking drivers are not safe even in IRQ context: https://lore.kernel.org/r/oc46gdpmmlly5o44obvmoatfqo5bhpgv7pabpvb6sjuqioymcg@gjsma3ghoz35 In an ideal world, all networking drivers would be fixed first and the atomic flush would be blocked only in NMI context. But it brings the question how reliable networking drivers are when the system is in a bad state. They might block flushing more reliable serial consoles which are more suitable for serious debugging anyway. - Allow to use the last 4 bytes of the printk ring buffer. - Prevent queuing IRQ work and block printk kthreads when consoles are suspended. Otherwise, they create non-necessary churn or even block the suspend. - Release console_lock() between each record in the kthread used for legacy consoles on RT. It might significantly speed up the boot. - Release nbcon context between each record in the atomic flush. The doorbell feature temporarily overrides the inbound translation to point to the address stored in epf_test->db_bar.phys_addr, i.e., it calls set_bar() twice without ever calling clear_bar(), as calling clear_bar() would clear the BAR's PCI address assigned by the host. Currently, the test allocates BAR sizes according to fixed table bar_size. This does not work with controllers which have fixed size BARs that are smaller than the requested BAR size. 2025-07-24PCI: endpoint: pci-epf-test: Add doorbell test supportFrank Li
Add doorbell support by allocating a dedicated BAR using the pci_epf_alloc_doorbell() API and mapping the Endpoint MSI controller message data address to it. The data to be written in the message address is stored in the 'pci_epf_test_reg::doorbell_data' register. Finally, the RC can trigger doorbell in the Endpoint by writing the content of 'doorbell_data' register to the offset specified in 'doorbell_offset' of the 'doorbell_bar' BAR. Triggering of the doorbell is detected by pci_epf_test_doorbell_handler(), which is bound to the doorbell IRQ. On successful completion, STATUS_DOORBELL_SUCCESS status is set in the above mentioned handler. To avoid breaking compatibility between host and endpoint, add two new commands: COMMAND_ENABLE_DOORBELL and COMMAND_DISABLE_DOORBELL. The doorbell is allocated when COMMAND_ENABLE_DOORBELL command is called and destroyed when COMMAND_DISABLE_DOORBELL is called. This doorbell feature only works when both RC and EP drivers support it. If one of them doesn't support the feature, the testcase will fail.
