2026-08-10watchdog: pretimeout: Convert dump pretimeout governor to tristateMayank Rungta
Commit 645ad41da8b2 ("watchdog: pretimeout: Add "dump" pretimeout governor") added the "dump" watchdog pretimeout governor, but restricted it to built-in code because trigger_all_cpu_backtrace() was not exported to loadable modules. Now that CPU backtrace APIs are supported for loadable kernel modules via cpumask_backtrace(), convert WATCHDOG_PRETIMEOUT_GOV_DUMP to tristate. This allows kernels to deliver the pretimeout governor as a loadable kernel module. To make the realtek watchdog driver functional when SWAP_IO_SPACE config is enabled, change all of the register access to be done by regmap API which helps us to tweak endianness with big-endian or little-endian property from within the device tree node. Add a new "dump" pretimeout governor that triggers a backtrace of all CPUs (via trigger_all_cpu_backtrace()) to the kernel log buffer. This provides diagnostic information right before the hardware watchdog fires. In addition, update the WATCHDOG_PRETIMEOUT_GOV_SEL Kconfig logic to fall back to the "panic" governor only when both "noop" and "dump" governors are disabled. 2026-05-10watchdog: convert the Kconfig dependency on OF_GPIO to OFBartosz Golaszewski
OF_GPIO is selected automatically on all OF systems. Any symbols it controls also provide stubs so there's really no reason to select it explicitly. We could simply remove the dependency but in order to avoid a new symbol popping up for everyone in make config - just convert it to requiring CONFIG_OF. This depends on M486 CPU support, which has been removed. Note that we still keep the RDC321X MFD, watchdog and GPIO drivers, because apparently there were 586/686 CPUs offered with the RDC321X, according to Arnd Bergmann: | "the [RDC321X] product line is still actively developed by RDC | and DM&P, and I suspect that some of the drivers are still used | on 586tsc-class (vortex86dx, vortex86mx) and 686-class | (vortex86dx3, vortex86ex) SoCs that do run modern kernels and | get updates." For this reason, update the watchdog driver and offer it on the broader 32-bit landscape, which has been COMPILE_TEST=y build-tested previously already: - depends on X86_RDC321X || COMPILE_TEST + depends on X86_32 || COMPILE_TEST The MFD and GPIO drivers were already independent of CONFIG_X86_RDC321X. 2026-05-03watchdog: Add driver for Gunyah WatchdogHrishabh Rajput
On Qualcomm SoCs running under the Gunyah hypervisor, access to watchdog through MMIO is not available on all platforms. Depending on the hypervisor configuration, the watchdog is either fully emulated or exposed via ARM's SMC Calling Conventions (SMCCC) through the Vendor Specific Hypervisor Service Calls space. Add driver to support the SMC-based watchdog provided by the Gunyah Hypervisor. Device registration is done in the QCOM SCM driver after checks to restrict the watchdog initialization to Qualcomm devices running under Gunyah. Gunyah watchdog is not a hardware but an SMC-based vendor-specific hypervisor interface provided by the Gunyah hypervisor. The design involving QCOM SCM driver for registering the platform device has been devised to avoid adding non-hardware nodes to devicetree. iTCO vendor support was introduced in 2006 to support SuperMicro boards with Pentium 3 CPUs. It was extended in 2009 to support motherbords with broken BIOS (specifically Intel DG33TL). The code is long since obsolete, so let's drop support for it. 2025-11-15watchdog: renesas_wwdt: add driverWolfram Sang
This driver adds support for the Renesas Window Watchdog Timer (WWDT). Because it can only be setup once after boot and we cannot know if this already happened in early boot stages, it is mandated that the firmware configures the watchdog. Linux then adapts according to the given setup. Note that this watchdog only reports an overflow to the Error Control Module (ECM) and does not reset the SoC on its own. 2025-05-24watchdog: Add the Watchdog Timer for the NXP S32 platformDaniel Lezcano
The S32 platform has several Watchdog Timer available and tied with a CPU. The SWT0 is the only one which directly asserts the reset line, other SWT require an external setup to configure the reset behavior which is not part of this change. As a side note, in the NXP documentation, the s32g2 and s32g3 reference manuals refer the watchdog as the 'Software Timer Watchdog' where the name can be misleading as it is actually a hardware watchdog. The maximum watchdog timeout value depends on the clock feeding the SWT counter which is 32bits wide. On the s32g274-rb2, the clock has a rate of 51MHz which result on 83 seconds maximum timeout. The timeout can be specified via the device tree with the usual existing bindings 'timeout-sec' or via the module param timeout. The watchdog can be loaded with the 'nowayout' option, preventing the watchdog to be stopped. The watchdog can be started at boot time with the 'early-enable' option, thus letting the watchdog framework to service the watchdog counter. The watchdog support the magic character to stop when the userspace releases the device. This driver has a number of issues (accesses arbitrary I/O ports without identifying the hardware, doesn't document what hardware it supports, suspiciously inconsistent locking model, doesn't implement WDIOC_SETTIMEOUT, potential integer overflow...) The driver was added in 2003 and there's no evidence that it has any recent user, all changes seem to be tree-wide, subsystem-wide, or the result of static code analysis. So I believe we should simply drop this legacy piece of code. 2024-10-28watchdog: Add HAS_IOPORT dependency for SBC8360 and SBC7240Niklas Schnelle
Both drivers use I/O port accesses without declaring a dependency on CONFIG_HAS_IOPORT. For sbc8360_wdt this causes a compile error on UML once inb()/outb() helpers become conditional. For sbc7240_wdt this causes no such errors with UML because this driver depends on both x86_32 and !UML. Nevertheless add HAS_IOPORT as a dependency for both drivers to be explicit and drop the !UML dependency for sbc7240_wdt as it is now redundant since UML implies no HAS_IOPORT. Introduce driver for WDG block on ROHM BD96801 scalable PMIC. This driver only supports watchdog with I2C feeding and delayed response detection. Whether the watchdog toggles PRSTB pin or just causes an interrupt can be configured via device-tree. The BD96801 PMIC HW supports also window watchdog (too early feeding detection) and Q&A mode. These are not supported by this driver. The Lenovo SE10 watchdog is only present on Lenovo ThinkEdge SE10 platforms, which are based on Intel Atom SoCs, and its driver relies on DMI tables. The Itanium architecture is obsolete, and an informal survey [0] reveals that any residual use of Itanium hardware in production is mostly HP-UX or OpenVMS based. The use of Linux on Itanium appears to be limited to enthusiasts that occasionally boot a fresh Linux kernel to see whether things are still working as intended, and perhaps to churn out some distro packages that are rarely used in practice. None of the original companies behind Itanium still produce or support any hardware or software for the architecture, and it is listed as 'Orphaned' in the MAINTAINERS file, as apparently, none of the engineers that contributed on behalf of those companies (nor anyone else, for that matter) have been willing to support or maintain the architecture upstream or even be responsible for applying the odd fix. The Intel firmware team removed all IA-64 support from the Tianocore/EDK2 reference implementation of EFI in 2018. (Itanium is the original architecture for which EFI was developed, and the way Linux supports it deviates significantly from other architectures.) Some distros, such as Debian and Gentoo, still maintain [unofficial] ia64 ports, but many have dropped support years ago. While the argument is being made [1] that there is a 'for the common good' angle to being able to build and run existing projects such as the Grid Community Toolkit [2] on Itanium for interoperability testing, the fact remains that none of those projects are known to be deployed on Linux/ia64, and very few people actually have access to such a system in the first place. Even if there were ways imaginable in which Linux/ia64 could be put to good use today, what matters is whether anyone is actually doing that, and this does not appear to be the case. There are no emulators widely available, and so boot testing Itanium is generally infeasible for ordinary contributors. GCC still supports IA-64 but its compile farm [3] no longer has any IA-64 machines. GLIBC would like to get rid of IA-64 [4] too because it would permit some overdue code cleanups. In summary, the benefits to the ecosystem of having IA-64 be part of it are mostly theoretical, whereas the maintenance overhead of keeping it supported is real. So let's rip off the band aid, and remove the IA-64 arch code entirely. This follows the timeline proposed by the Debian/ia64 maintainer [5], which removes support in a controlled manner, leaving IA-64 in a known good state in the most recent LTS release.
