2026-05-20perf pmu-events: Convert recursive shell assignments and macros to Make ↵Ian Rogers
built-ins In pmu-events/Build, ZENS, ARMS, and INTELS were assigned using recursive assignment (=), and model_name/vendor_name were evaluated using shell macros (echo ... | sed ...). Because these variables were expanded inside the COPY_RULE dependency evaluation loop across hundreds of PMU JSON files and inside every metric generation recipe, Kbuild continuously re-executed 'ls', 'grep', and 'sed' shell forks thousands of times during AST parsing and execution. Convert ZENS, ARMS, and INTELS to simply expanded variables (:=) and replace model_name/vendor_name with pure GNU Make string functions. This guarantees Make executes directory probing shell forks exactly once when the Build file is parsed and evaluates path macros purely in memory, completely eliminating over 7,800 redundant sub-processes during build startup. 2026-05-20perf pmu-events: Split big_c_string storage into standalone compilation unitIan Rogers
Currently, jevents.py emits both the massive 2.8 MB big_c_string literal and tens of thousands of compact_pmu_event struct arrays into a single pmu-events.c compilation unit. Compiling this giant file takes ~2.2 seconds on a single CPU core during Kbuild startup. Refactor jevents.py to emit big_c_string into a dedicated pmu-events-string.c compilation unit. This allows Kbuild to compile pmu-events.o and pmu-events-string.o simultaneously in parallel across two separate CPU cores, preserving 100% string deduplication and zero dynamic ELF relocations while cutting C compilation latency in half. Add pmu-events-string.c to tools/perf/.gitignore to ensure in-tree Kbuild runs do not leave untracked generated files in the working directory. To guarantee 100% backward compatibility with GNU Make 4.0+ (avoiding the Make 4.3+ grouped target &: syntax which causes older Make versions like 4.2.1 to spawn multiple concurrent jevents.py processes during parallel builds), implement a robust dependency chaining pattern: $(PMU_EVENTS_C): $(JEVENTS_DEPS) $(PMU_EVENTS_STRING_C): $(PMU_EVENTS_C) @: This ensures jevents.py is invoked exactly once. If jevents.py aborts early, Make's .DELETE_ON_ERROR: purges pmu-events.c, guaranteeing that subsequent Make invocations correctly re-execute the script and overwrite pmu-events-string.c. In jevents.py, explicitly close output_file first and output_string_file second at the tail of main() to guarantee that pmu-events-string.c receives a filesystem timestamp greater than or equal to pmu-events.c, completely avoiding redundant incremental rebuilds. 2026-04-13perf build: fix "argument list too long" in second locationMarkus Mayer
Turns out that displaying "RM $^" via quiet_cmd_rm can also upset the shell and cause it to display "argument list too long". Trying to quote $^ doesn't help. In the end, *not* displaying the (potentially long) list of files is probably the right thing to do for a "quiet" message, anyway. Instead, let's display a count of how many files were removed. There is always V=1 if more detail is required. TEST linux/tools/perf/pmu-events/metric_test.log RM ...634 orphan file(s)... 2026-03-04perf build: Prevent "argument list too long" errorMarkus Mayer
Due to a recent change, building perf may result in a build error when it is trying to "prune orphans". The file list passed to "rm" may exceed what the shell can handle. The build will then abort with an error like this: TEST [...]/arm64/build/linux-custom/tools/perf/pmu-events/metric_test.log make[5]: /bin/sh: Argument list too long make[5]: *** [pmu-events/Build:217: prune_orphans] Error 127 make[5]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs.... make[4]: *** [Makefile.perf:773: [...]/tools/perf/pmu-events/pmu-events-in.o] Error 2 make[4]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs.... make[3]: *** [Makefile.perf:289: sub-make] Error 2 Processing the arguments via "xargs", instead of passing the list of files directly to "rm" via the shell, prevents this issue. 2026-02-06perf build: Reduce pmu-events related copying and mkdirsIan Rogers
When building to an output directory the previous code would remove files and then copy the source files over. Each source file copy would have a rule to make its directory. All JSON for every architecture was considered a source file. This led to unnecessary copying as a file would be deleted and then the same file copied again, unnecessary directory making, and copying of files not used in the build. A side-effect would be a lot of build messages. This change makes it so that all computed output files are created and then compared to all files in the OUTPUT directory. By filtering out the files that would be copied, unnecessary files can be determined and then deleted - note, this is a phony target which would remake the pmu-events.c if always depended upon, and so the dependency is conditional on there being files to remove. This has some overhead as the $(OUTPUT)/pmu-events is "find" over rather than just "rm -fr", but the savings from unnecessary copying, etc. should make up for this new make overhead. The copy target just does copying but has a dependency on the directory it needs being built, avoiding repetitive mkdirs. The source files for copying only consider the JEVENTS_ARCH unless the JEVENTS_ARCH is all. The metric JSON is only generated if appropriate, rather than always being generated and jevents.py deciding whether or not to use the files. The mypy and pylint targets are fixed as variable names had changed but the rules not updated. The line count of a build with "make -C tools/perf O=/tmp/perf clean all" prior to this change was 2181 lines, after this change it is 1596 lines. This is a reduction of 585 lines or about 27%. The generated pmu-events.c for JEVENTS_ARCH "x86" and "all" were validated as being identical after this change. 2026-01-28perf jevents: Add load event JSON to verify and allow fallbacksIan Rogers
Add a LoadEvents function that loads all event JSON files in a directory. In the Event constructor ensure all events are defined in the event JSON except for legacy events like "cycles". If the initial event isn't found then legacy_event1 is used, and if that isn't found legacy_event2 is used. This allows a single Event to have multiple event names as models will often rename the same event over time. If the event doesn't exist an exception is raised. So that references to metrics can be added, add the MetricRef class. This doesn't validate as an event name and so provides an escape hatch for metrics to refer to each other. 2026-01-27perf jevents: Handle deleted JSONS in out of source buildsJames Clark
Make the source folders a dependency for the generated folder root so that whenever a file is deleted from the source it will force a new fresh copy of all the JSON files and avoid stale deleted files. JSON_DIRS_OUTPUT_ROOT needs to be a dependency of LEGACY_CACHE_JSON so that the root folder doesn't get cleaned after the legacy JSON is generated. But this is a no-op with in-source builds as JSON_DIRS_OUTPUT_ROOT is unset. JSON_DIRS is added as a dependency of PMU_EVENTS_C which also forces a re-build for in source builds when JSON files are deleted. This could have also resulted in stale builds, but never a broken one. 2025-10-20perf jevents: Fix build when there are other json files in the treeJames Clark
The unquoted glob *.json will expand to a real file if, for example, there is any file in the Perf source ending in .json. This can happen when using tools like Bear and clangd which generate a compile_commands.json file. With the glob already expanded by the shell, the find command will fail to wildcard any real json events files. Fix it by wrapping the star in quotes so it's passed to find rather than the shell. This fixes the following build error (most of the diff output omitted): $ make V=1 -C tools/perf O=/tmp/perf_build_with_json TEST /tmp/perf_build_with_json/pmu-events/empty-pmu-events.log ... /* offset=121053 */ "node-access\000legacy cache\000Local memory read accesses\000legacy-cache-config=6\000\00010\000\000\000\000\000" /* offset=121135 */ "node-misses\000legacy cache\000Local memory read misses\000legacy-cache-config=0x10006\000\00010\000\000\000\000\000" /* offset=121221 */ "node-miss\000legacy cache\000Local memory read misses\000legacy-cache-config=0x10006\000\00010\000\000\000\000\000" ... - { .event_table = { 0, 0 }, .metric_table = { 0, 0 }, }, make[3]: *** [pmu-events/Build:54: /tmp/perf_build_with_json/pmu-events/empty-pmu-events.log] Error 1 Fixes: 4bb55de4ff03 ("perf jevents: Support copying the source json files to OUTPUT") Signed-off-by: James Clark <james.clark@linaro.org> Reviewed-by: Leo Yan <leo.yan@arm.com> Tested-by: Leo Yan <leo.yan@arm.com> Signed-off-by: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org>
2025-10-15perf jevents: Add legacy-hardware and legacy-cache jsonIan Rogers
The legacy-hardware.json is added containing hardware events similarly to the software.json file. A difference is that for the software PMU the name is known and matches sysfs. In the legacy-hardware.json no Unit/PMU is specified for the events meaning default_core is used and the events will appear for all core PMUs. There are potentially 1216 legacy cache events, rather than list them in a json file add a make_legacy_cache.py helper to generate them. By using json for legacy hardware and cache events: descriptions of the events can be added; events can be marked as deprecated, such as those misleadingly named l2 (deprecated is also used to mark all events that weren't previously displayed in perf list); and the name lookup becomes case insensitive. The C string encoding all the perf events and metrics is increased in size by 123,499 bytes which will increase the perf binary size. Later changes will remove hard coded event parsing for legacy hardware and cache events, turning parsing overhead into a binary search during event lookup. That event descriptions are based off of those in perf_event_open man page, credit to Vince Weaver <vincent.weaver@maine.edu>. 2025-10-15perf jevents: Support copying the source json files to OUTPUTIan Rogers
The jevents command expects all json files to be organized under a single directory. When generating json files from scripts (to reduce laborious copy and paste in the json) we don't want to generate the json into the source directory if there is an OUTPUT directory specified. This change adds a GEN_JSON for this case where the GEN_JSON copies the JSON files to OUTPUT, only when OUTPUT is specified. The Makefile.perf clean code is updated to clean up this directory when present. 2024-08-01perf jevents: Autogenerate empty-pmu-events.cIan Rogers
empty-pmu-events.c exists so that builds may occur without python being installed on a system. Manually updating empty-pmu-events.c to be in sync with jevents.py is a pain, let's use jevents.py to generate empty-pmu-events.c. 1) change jevents.py so that an arch and model of none cause generation of a pmu-events.c without any json. Add a SPDX and autogenerated warning to the start of the file. 2) change Build so that if a generated pmu-events.c for arch none and model none doesn't match empty-pmu-events.c the build fails with a cat of the differences. Update Makefile.perf to clean up the files used for this. 3) update empty-pmu-events.c to match the output of jevents.py with arch and mode of none. Committer notes: The firtst paragraph is confusing, so I asked and Ian further clarified: --- The requirement for python hasn't changed. Case 1: no python or NO_JEVENTS=1 Build happens using empty-pmu-events.c that is checked in, no python is required. Case 2: python pmu-events.c is created by jevents.py (requiring python) and then built. This change adds a step where the empty-pmu-events.c is created using jevents.py and that file is diffed against the checked in version. This stops the checked in empty-pmu-events.c diverging if changes are made to jevents.py. If the diff causes the build to fail then you just copy the diff empty-pmu-events.c over the checked in one. --- Reviewed-by: John Garry <john.g.garry@oracle.com> Signed-off-by: Ian Rogers <irogers@google.com> Cc: Adrian Hunter <adrian.hunter@intel.com> Cc: Alexander Shishkin <alexander.shishkin@linux.intel.com> Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@redhat.com> Cc: Jing Zhang <renyu.zj@linux.alibaba.com> Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Cc: Kan Liang <kan.liang@linux.intel.com> Cc: Mark Rutland <mark.rutland@arm.com> Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Cc: Oliver Sang <oliver.sang@intel.com> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Philip Li <philip.li@intel.com> Cc: Sandipan Das <sandipan.das@amd.com> Cc: Weilin Wang <weilin.wang@intel.com> Cc: Xu Yang <xu.yang_2@nxp.com> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20240730191744.3097329-3-irogers@google.com Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>
2023-08-03perf build: Update build rule for generated filesNamhyung Kim
The bison and flex generate C files from the source (.y and .l) files. When O= option is used, they are saved in a separate directory but the default build rule assumes the .C files are in the source directory. So it might read invalid file if there are generated files from an old version. The same is true for the pmu-events files. For example, the following command would cause a build failure: $ git checkout v6.3 $ make -C tools/perf # build in the same directory $ git checkout v6.5-rc2 $ mkdir build # create a build directory $ make -C tools/perf O=build # build in a different directory but it # refers files in the source directory Let's update the build rule to specify those cases explicitly to depend on the files in the output directory. Note that it's not a complete fix and it needs the next patch for the include path too. 2022-12-14perf jevents: Parse metrics during conversionIan Rogers
Currently the 'MetricExpr' json value is passed from the json file to the pmu-events.c. This change introduces an expression tree that is parsed into. The parsing is done largely by using operator overloading and python's 'eval' function. Two advantages in doing this are: 1) Broken metrics fail at compile time rather than relying on `perf test` to detect. `perf test` remains relevant for checking event encoding and actual metric use. 2) The conversion to a string from the tree can minimize the metric's string size, for example, preferring 1e6 over 1000000, avoiding multiplication by 1 and removing unnecessary whitespace. On x86 this reduces the string size by 2,930bytes (0.07%). In future changes it would be possible to programmatically generate the json expressions (a single line of text and so a pain to write manually) for an architecture using the expression tree. This could avoid copy-pasting metrics for all architecture variants. v4. Doesn't simplify "0*SLOTS" to 0, as the pattern is used to fix Intel metrics with topdown events. v3. Avoids generic types on standard types like set that aren't supported until Python 3.9, fixing an issue with Python 3.6 reported-by John Garry. v3 also fixes minor pylint issues and adds a call to Simplify on the read expression tree. v2. 2018-03-16perf vendor events: Add support for arch standard eventsJohn Garry
For some architectures (like arm), there are architecture- defined events. Sometimes these events may be "recommended" according to the architecture standard, in that the implementer is free ignore the "recommendation" and create its custom event. This patch adds support for parsing standard events from arch-defined JSONs, and fixing up vendor events when they have implemented these events as standard. Support is also ensured that the vendor may implement their own custom events. A new step is added to the pmu events parsing to fix up the vendor events with the arch-standard events. The arch-defined JSONs must be placed in the arch root folder for preprocessing prior to tree JSON processing. In the vendor JSON, to specify that the arch event is supported, the keyword "ArchStdEvent" should be used, like this: [ { "ArchStdEvent": "L1D_CACHE_WR", }, ] Matching is based on the "EventName" field in the architecture JSON. No other JSON objects are strictly required. However, for other objects added, these take precedence over architecture defined standard events, thus supporting separate events which have the same event code. 2016-10-03perf jevents: Program to convert JSON fileAndi Kleen
This is a modified version of an earlier patch by Andi Kleen. We expect architectures to create JSON files describing the performance monitoring (PMU) events that each CPU model/family of the architecture supports. Following is an example of the JSON file entry for an x86 event: [ ... { "EventCode": "0x00", "UMask": "0x01", "EventName": "INST_RETIRED.ANY", "BriefDescription": "Instructions retired from execution.", "PublicDescription": "Instructions retired from execution.", "Counter": "Fixed counter 1", "CounterHTOff": "Fixed counter 1", "SampleAfterValue": "2000003", "SampleAfterValue": "2000003", "MSRIndex": "0", "MSRValue": "0", "TakenAlone": "0", "CounterMask": "0", "Invert": "0", "AnyThread": "0", "EdgeDetect": "0", "PEBS": "0", "PRECISE_STORE": "0", "Errata": "null", "Offcore": "0" }, ... ] All the PMU events supported by a CPU model/family must be grouped into "topics" such as "Pipelining", "Floating-point", "Virtual-memory" etc. All events belonging to a topic must be placed in a separate JSON file (eg: "Pipelining.json") and all the topic JSON files for a CPU model must be in a separate directory. Eg: for the CPU model "Silvermont_core": $ ls tools/perf/pmu-events/arch/x86/Silvermont_core Floating-point.json Memory.json Other.json Pipelining.json Virtualmemory.json Finally, to allow multiple CPU models to share a single set of JSON files, architectures must provide a mapping between a model and its set of events: $ grep Silvermont tools/perf/pmu-events/arch/x86/mapfile.csv GenuineIntel-6-4D,V13,Silvermont_core,core GenuineIntel-6-4C,V13,Silvermont_core,core which maps each CPU, identified by [vendor, family, model, version, type] to a directory of JSON files. Thus two (or more) CPU models support the set of PMU events listed in the directory. tools/perf/pmu-events/arch/x86/Silvermont_core/ Given this organization of files, the program, jevents: - locates all JSON files for each CPU-model of the architecture, - parses all JSON files for the CPU-model and generates a C-style "PMU-events table" (pmu-events.c) for the model - locates a mapfile for the architecture - builds a global table, mapping each model of CPU to the corresponding PMU-events table. The 'pmu-events.c' is generated when building perf and added to libperf.a. The global table pmu_events_map[] table in this pmu-events.c will be used in perf in a follow-on patch. If the architecture does not have any JSON files or there is an error in processing them, an empty mapping file is created. This would allow the build of perf to proceed even if we are not able to provide aliases for events. The parser for JSON files allows parsing Intel style JSON event files. This allows to use an Intel event list directly with perf. The Intel event lists can be quite large and are too big to store in unswappable kernel memory. The conversion from JSON to C-style is straight forward. The parser knows (very little) Intel specific information, and can be easily extended to handle fields for other CPUs. The parser code is partially shared with an independent parsing library, which is 2-clause BSD licensed. To avoid any conflicts I marked those files as BSD licensed too. As part of perf they become GPLv2. Committer notes: Fixes: 1) Limit maxfds to 512 to avoid nftd() segfaulting on alloca() with a big rlim_max, as in docker containers - acme 2) Make jevents a hostprog, supporting cross compilation - jolsa 3) Use HOSTCC for jevents final step - acme 4) Define _GNU_SOURCE for asprintf, as we can't use CC's EXTRA_CFLAGS, that has to have --sysroot on the Android NDK 24 - acme 5) Removed $(srctree)/tools/perf/pmu-events/pmu-events.c from the 'clean' target, it is generated on $(OUTPUT)pmu-events/pmu-events.c, which is already taken care of in the original patch - acme Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Sukadev Bhattiprolu <sukadev@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Tested-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Acked-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@kernel.org> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Madhavan Srinivasan <maddy@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Cc: linuxppc-dev@lists.ozlabs.org Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1473978296-20712-3-git-send-email-sukadev@linux.vnet.ibm.com Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20160927141846.GA6589@krava Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>
