Pull networking updates from Jakub Kicinski:
"One of the 'small improvements all over the place' releases for us.
It's hard to draw any direct comparisons because summer vacations
disrupted our patch processing (and presumably - generation) quite a
bit.
Quick and dirty count suggests we (Paolo and I) merged a very similar
number of net (632) and net-next (648) patches. This is not telling
the full story either because 1/3 to 1/2 of the net-next patches also
*seem* like AI-driven low priority fixes, cleanups and clarifications.
We are completely overwhelmed, of course. The glimmer of hope is that
we secured sufficient LLM budget and access (thank you Meta!) to run
reviews with multiple frontier models on each patch. This eliminates
some hallucinations. That said, in terms of review, the LLMs can only
do so much.
The sad truth is that our APIs (especially for rare events like PCIe
errors, timeouts etc) have always been racy, and now LLMs don't let us
ignore that. I expect our direction for the next release will be to
tweak the reviews a little bit more, but start shifting focus to
letting the LLMs take care of the busy work - managing patchwork,
automating common process complaints, editing commit messages, and
maybe applying patches which already got "reviewed-by" tags from
people we trust...

Pull SoC devicetree updates from Arnd Bergmann:
"There are two new mystery SoCs with very little public information
about them so far, Qualcomm's Cortex-A78C based "Shikra" and Altera's
Cortex-A720 based Agilex72 SOCFPGA.
We have also gained support for a couple of SoCs from the 2023/2024
timeframe that have been in the making for a while:
- The Apple platform gains support for M3 Pro, Max and Ultra SoC,
following the basic M3 support from 7.2.
- Samsung Exynos 1580 is a high-end mobile phone SoC from 2024
- Canaan K230 is a RISC-V based 64-bit AI SoC, based on the earlier
K210 chip
- Sophgo SG2000 is a mixed Arm/RISC-V chip that was already supported
using the Arm core but is now also added for RISC-V along with
several other variants of the cv18xx series
In terms of newly added machines we have reference platforms for all
the chips above, plus
- Only four 32-bit Arm boards: two older phones and two older
industrial/embedded boards; using Allwinner, Qualcomm and Rockchip
SoCs
- Three laptops und three phones using Qualcomm SoCs
- Ten 64-bit Rockchips based single-board computers, along with one
NAS box and a game console.
- Seven industrial/embedded boards and modules using NXP i.MX8/9
SoCs.
- A Lenovo desktop box based on NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX
- A few more single-board computers based on Allwinnner A133,
Spacemit K1 and TI AM62.
As usual, there is a constant stream of minor cleanups and fixes
towards addressing the 'dt-check-style --mode strict' warnings, and
everyone is expected to address those warnings for new submissions
now"

warnings and should have addressed most of applicable 'strict' mode
ones.

Document how Devicetree and Open Firmware maintainers handle their
subsystem, especially focusing on two caveats:
Devicetree subsystem handles patches with a minor difference comparing
to other subsystems: while DT maintainers pick up OF code, they only
provide review of DT bindings without applying these.
All three DT bindings maintainers rely currently on Patchwork and due to
enormous amount of emails per day, regardless how much DT maintainers
try, they cannot read all the emails.

the arena address_space(1) type attribute for kfuncs, which were
previously produced by pahole.

The security team is still seeing a lot of reports lacking a full patch
and showing missing contents and formatting issues. Since AI assistants
tend to be better than humans at following instructions, let's defer to
coding-assistants.rst to follow mandatory steps, and insist on the plain
text format, as well as asking for recipient addresses and an e-mail
client setup hint to be mentioned early in the report for the reporter.
Also add a link to https://github.com/masoncl/kres.git which contains
way more advanced and detailed steps for those willing to go further.
Tested with Opus-5 and Qwen3.6-27B-Architect-Polaris2-Fable-B-F451, both
of which proceeded according to instructions.

Due to the increasing capabilities of available AI models, it's becoming
common to see them used to find bugs anywhere. Unfortunately the quality
of reports (especially when they're believed to be security relevant) is
still lacking a lot.
Let's add a section dedicated to bug finding, explaining the few
mandatory steps (noting commit ID, writing the fix from the session that
found the bug, building and testing, etc). This was tested both against
Qwen3.6-27B-Architect-Polaris2-Fable-B-F451 running under Hermes, and
Opus-5, and both followed the instructions to the letter, verifying
their results and checking threat-model.rst to decline the vulnerability
aspect. At least in the current form it's expected to improve the
situation a little bit.

Too often we're getting reports saying "still valid in latest mainline"
with no indication of when this was verified, making this indication
pointless. Let's clarify it and insist on having a version or commit ID,
and that the version must necessarily be for a kernel.org kernel and not
a distro one.

When originally writing the "fake USB device" entry, it was difficult
to find a suitable section for it and it ended up in "non production
use" but that doesn't fit particularly well. Actually it's very similar
to crafted filesystems, it's a matter of spec violation. Both drivers
and FS are written against a spec, and what the threat model doesn't
cover is out-of-spec use. So let's move the entry there and rename the
crafted FS entry to "Non-conforming devices and media" instead.
Overall it looks more consistent.
The spec was tested agains Qwen3.6-27B-Architect-Polaris2-Fable-B-F451,
Opus-5 and Gemini by reading the threat-model file, then reading a tens
of FS and driver fixes, and they were now all properly classified as
regular bugs, except two that Gemini and Opus rightfully classified as
vulns (Qwen didn't spot the security potential but that's out of our
scope).

Throwing an LLM (Opus 5) at a file looking for random bugs after having
read the threat model made it ignore certain bugs it found because "the
threat model said they must be ignored". When asked why, the LLM
rightfully reported the ambiguous wording used at a few places:
"is not a security bug", which can also be read as "is not a bug",
despite the rest of the document. That is particularly true when the
LLM decides to look for info using grep.
This change replaces "security bug" with "vulnerability" at a few places
in order to remove this identified ambiguity, and uses "bugs" instead of
issues in two such sentences to insist that what is described remains a
bug.

provides free advertising to proprietary software companies while adding
little or no useful information. Change the requirement to simply:

to capture the fact that an LLM was used without tracking which one.

Commit 5903019b2a5e ("Documentation/SubmittingPatches: convert it to
ReST markup") made "DCO 1.1" a subsection under the section "Sign your
work - ...". However, the DCO text is meant to be referenced in the
section.
Furthermore, in HTML and PDF docs, paragraphs following the DCO:
then you just add a line saying:

as it was propagated to the maintainers and ultimately to Linus, with
the first SoB entry signalling primary authorship of a single author.
appear to belong to the DCO, rather than to "Sign your work - ..."

Fix the section structure by making the DCO a literal block, with
indent changes made in commit 5903019b2a5e reverted.
While at it, fix the same issue at "Reviewer's statement of
oversight".

strncpy() has been a persistent source of bugs due to its ambiguous
intended usage and frequently counter-intuitive semantics: it may not
NUL-terminate the destination, and it unconditionally zero-pads to the
full length, which isn't always needed. All former callers have been
migrated[1] to:
- strscpy() for NUL-terminated destinations
- strscpy_pad() for NUL-terminated destinations needing zero-padding
- strtomem_pad() for non-NUL-terminated fixed-width fields
- memcpy_and_pad() for bounded copies with explicit padding
- memcpy() for known-length copies
Remove the generic implementation, its declaration, the FORTIFY_SOURCE
wrapper, and associated tests.

Commit 9edd04c4189e ("docs: Raise minimum pahole version to 1.26 for
KF_IMPLICIT_ARGS kfuncs") raised the minimum required pahole version
from 1.22 to 1.26 in the requirements table and added a paragraph
explaining the failure mode for distributions still shipping pahole
v1.25 (e.g. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS).
The next day, commit ece7e57afd51 ("docs: changes.rst and ver_linux:
sort the lists") came through a different tree (docs vs sched_ext) and
re-flowed the table alphabetically, but its base did not include
9edd04c4189e. When the two commits met in mainline, the textual rewrite
of the table won and the version bump was lost. The added "Since Linux
7.0..." paragraph also disappeared.
The result is that changes.rst on master (v7.1-rc5) lists pahole 1.22
again, even though sched_ext kfuncs annotated with KF_IMPLICIT_ARGS
genuinely require v1.26 to produce a correct vmlinux BTF. Users on
distributions with pahole v1.25 hit "func_proto incompatible with
vmlinux" when loading any sched_ext BPF program (scx_simple,
scx_qmap, ...) and have no documentation pointing them at the version
gap.
Restore both changes from 9edd04c4189e.

The current minimum version of LLVM for building the kernel is 15.0.0.
However, there are two deficiencies compared to GCC that were fixed in
LLVM 17 that are starting to become more noticeable.
The first was a bug in LLVM's scope checker [1], where all labels in a
function were validated as potential targets of an asm goto statement,
even if they were not listed in the asm goto statement as targets. This
becomes particularly problematic when the cleanup attribute is used, as
asm goto(... : label_a);

will trigger an error since the scope checker will complain that the
cleanup variable would be skipped when jumping from the first asm goto
to label_b (which obviously cannot happen). This issue was the catalyst
for commit e2ffa15b9baa ("kbuild: Disable CC_HAS_ASM_GOTO_OUTPUT on
clang < 17"). Unfortunately, this issue is reproducible with regular asm
goto in addition to asm goto with outputs, so that change was not
entirely sufficient to avoid the issue altogether. As asm goto has
effectively been required since commit a0a12c3ed057 ("asm goto:
eradicate CC_HAS_ASM_GOTO") and the usage of the cleanup attribute
continues to grow across the tree, raising the minimum to a version that
avoids this issue altogether is a better long term solution than
attempting to workaround it at every spot where it happens.
The second issue is an incompatibility with GCC 8.1+ around variables
marked with const being valid constant expressions for _Static_assert
and other macros [2]. With GCC 8.1 being the minimum supported version
since commit 118c40b7b503 ("kbuild: require gcc-8 and binutils-2.30"),
this incompatibility becomes more of a maintenance burden since only
clang-15 and clang-16 are affected by it.
Looking at the clang version of various major distributions through
Docker images, no one should be left behind as a result of this bump, as
the old ones cannot clear the current minimum of 15.0.0.

was not until LLVM 18 that LLVM adopted the scheme of x.0.0 being a
prerelease version and x.1.0 is a release version [3] to help with
scenarios such as this.

Common understanding of word "Reviewer" is: a person performing a review
work [1]. Tools are not persons, thus cannot be reviewers in this term.
Also tools cannot make statements and cannot take responsibility for the
review.
Our docs already clearly mark that "Reviewed-by" must come from a
person:
- "By offering my Reviewed-by: tag, I state that:"
Usage of first person "I" and word "state"
- "A Reviewed-by tag is *a statement of opinion* that the patch is an
appropriate modification of the kernel without any remaining serious"
Only a person can make a statement of opinion.
- "Any interested reviewer (who has done the work) can offer a
Reviewed-by"
A person can offer a tag thus above does not grant the tool
permission to offer a tag.
However this might not be enough, so let's clarify that only a person
with a known identity can state the "Reviewer's statement of oversight".

out a number of admin-level tasks, but there are numerous capabilities that
can confer that sort of power. Generalize the text slightly to make it

AI tools are increasingly used to assist in bug discovery. While these
tools can identify valid issues, reports that are submitted without
manual verification often lack context, contain speculative impact
assessments, or include unnecessary formatting. Such reports increase
triage effort, waste maintainers' time and may be ignored.
Reports where the reporter has verified the issue and the proposed fix
typically meet quality standards. This documentation outlines specific
requirements for length, formatting, and impact evaluation to reduce
the effort needed to deal with these reports.

The use of automated tools to find bugs in random locations of the kernel
induces a raise of security reports even if most of them should just be
reported as regular bugs. This patch is an attempt at drawing a line
between what qualifies as a security bug and what does not, hoping to
improve the situation and ease decision on the reporter's side.
It defers the enumeration to a new file, threat-model.rst, that tries
to enumerate various classes of issues that are and are not security
bugs. This should permit to more easily update this file for various
subsystem-specific rules without having to revisit the security bug
reporting guide.

With the increase of automated reports, the security team is dealing
with way more messages than really needed. The reporting process works
well with most teams so there is no need to systematically involve the
security team in reports.
Let's suggest to keep it for small lists of recipients and new reporters
only. This should continue to cover the risk of lost messages while
reducing the volume from prolific reporters.

Steady stream of fixes. Last two weeks feel comparable to the two
weeks before the merge window. Lots of AI-aided bug discovery. A newer
big source is Sashiko/Gemini (Roman Gushchin's system), which points
out issues in existing code during patch review (maybe 25% of fixes
here likely originating from Sashiko). Nice thing is these are often
fixed by the respective maintainers, not drive-bys.

Common mistake in commit messages of patches on mailing list adding
CONFIG options to arm/multi_v7 or arm64/defconfig is saying what that
patch is doing, e.g. "Enable driver foo". That is obvious from the diff
part, thus explaining it does not bring any value. What brings value is
to understand why "driver foo" should be in a shared, upstream
defconfig, especially considering that distros have their own defconfigs
and we do not care about non-upstream trees.

It is obvious that one can ask DT maintainers of something, just like
one can ask anyone, so just drop the sentence. Concise documents with
rules have bigger chances of actually being read by people.
