2026-07-17accessibility: speakup: unregister tty ldisc on later init failuresHaoxiang Li
The ldisc registration is intentionally non-fatal, since some synth drivers do not use tty/ldisc. However, once speakup_init() continues past the registration point and later fails, the init unwind path should mirror speakup_exit() and call spk_ttyio_unregister_ldisc(). Add the missing unregister call to the error path after synth_release(), matching the normal module exit cleanup order. 2026-07-17speakup: keyhelp: guard letter_offsets possible out-of-range indexingPavel Zhigulin
help_init() builds letter_offsets[] by using the first byte of each function name as an index via `(start & 31) - 1`. If function_names are overridden from sysfs (root) with a name starting outside [a–z], the index underflows or exceeds the array, leading to OOB write. Function names can be overridden with the following commands as root: modprobe speakup_soft echo "0 _bad" > /sys/accessibility/speakup/i18n/function_names # then press Insert+2 on /dev/tty This fix checks the first letter in help_init(), and if it is not in the [a–z] range the function returns an error to the caller. Eventually this error is propagated to drivers/accessibility/speakup/main.c:2217, which causes a bleep sound. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) i18n currently assume latin1 encoding, which is not enough for most languages. This separates out the utf-8 processing of /dev/synthu, and uses it for a new synth_writeu, which we make synth_printf now use. This has the effect of making all the i18 messages processed in utf-8. 2024-03-07speakup: Add /dev/synthu deviceSamuel Thibault
/dev/synth has always been 8bit, but applications nowadays mostly expect to be using utf-8 encoding. This adds /dev/synthu to be able to synthesize non-latin1 characters. This however remains limited to 16bit unicode like the rest of speakup. Any odd input or input beyond 16bit is just discarded. 2024-03-07speakup: Fix 8bit characters from direct synthSamuel Thibault
When userland echoes 8bit characters to /dev/synth with e.g. echo -e '\xe9' > /dev/synth synth_write would get characters beyond 0x7f, and thus negative when char is signed. When given to synth_buffer_add which takes a u16, this would sign-extend and produce a U+ffxy character rather than U+xy. Users thus get garbled text instead of accents in their output. Let's fix this by making sure that we read unsigned characters. Count passed to tty_ldisc_ops::receive_buf*(), ::lookahead_buf(), and returned from ::receive_buf2() is expected to be size_t. So set it to size_t to unify with the rest of the code. 2023-04-13braille_console: remove MODULE_LICENSE in non-modulesNick Alcock
Since commit 8b41fc4454e ("kbuild: create modules.builtin without Makefile.modbuiltin or tristate.conf"), MODULE_LICENSE declarations are used to identify modules. As a consequence, uses of the macro in non-modules will cause modprobe to misidentify their containing object file as a module when it is not (false positives), and modprobe might succeed rather than failing with a suitable error message. So remove it in the files in this commit, none of which can be built as modules. This patch includes an enhancement requested frequently on the mailing list.[1][2] It adds a variable, cur_phonetic in the spk_vars, which can be set as a module parameter, as well as in /sys/speakup/cur_phonetic. This patch also documents cur_phonetic as a sysfs attribute in sysfs-driver-speakup. When cur_phonetic=1, it causes speakup to speak letters phonetically if paused on the character while arrowing through a word. When a user does not set cur_phonetic to any value, the default value for it would be 0.
