2026-06-08NFSv4/flexfiles: honor FF_FLAGS_NO_IO_THRU_MDS in pg_get_mirror_count_writeMike Snitzer
The FF_FLAGS_NO_IO_THRU_MDS flag lives on each lseg, so any fallback decision made when there is no current lseg (e.g. between LAYOUTRETURN and the next LAYOUTGET) cannot run the per-lseg check. Introduce a sticky hdr-level ditto for FF_FLAGS_NO_IO_THRU_MDS in struct nfs4_flexfile_layout::flags (NFS4_FF_HDR_NO_IO_THRU_MDS bit), set whenever ff_layout_alloc_lseg() parses an lseg with the flag. The bit is never cleared for the lifetime of the layout hdr; the server is assumed to be consistent in its no-fallback policy per file. kzalloc() in ff_layout_alloc_layout_hdr() zero-initializes the field. Use the new ff_layout_hdr_no_fallback_to_mds() helper to gate ff_layout_pg_get_mirror_count_write(): when pnfs_update_layout() returns NULL (e.g. NFS_LAYOUT_BULK_RECALL, pnfs_layout_io_test_failed, pnfs_layoutgets_blocked) the existing code unconditionally calls nfs_pageio_reset_write_mds(). This is a source of unwanted WRITE to MDS. Fix it by checking NFS4_FF_HDR_NO_IO_THRU_MDS bit, and if set surface -EAGAIN instead; the writepage-side caller (nfs_do_writepage() for buffered, nfs_direct_write_reschedule() for O_DIRECT) then redirties the request so writeback retries via pNFS. Commit f06bedfa62d5 ("pNFS/flexfiles: don't attempt pnfs on fatal DS errors") teaches ff_layout_{read,write}_pagelist() to return PNFS_NOT_ATTEMPTED when nfs4_ff_layout_prepare_ds() fails with a nfs_error_is_fatal() errno (e.g. -ETIMEDOUT from a SOFTCONN connect deadline, -ENOMEM, -ERESTARTSYS), so that the client gives up instead of spinning. pnfs_do_{read,write}() then dispatches the I/O through pnfs_{read,write}_through_mds() → nfs_pageio_reset_{read,write}_mds(). That fallback is unconditional and silently violates FF_FLAGS_NO_IO_THRU_MDS: when the layout segment carries the flag (typically single-mirror appliance layouts where MDS I/O is explicitly forbidden), the out_failed: path's \`&& !ds_fatal_error\` clause overrides the flag's short-circuit through ff_layout_avoid_mds_available_ds() and routes the I/O to the MDS file handle anyway. This is reachable in practice during a data-server restart: SOFTCONN exhaustion produces -ETIMEDOUT, which is fatal per nfs_error_is_fatal(), which triggers PNFS_NOT_ATTEMPTED, which silently goes to MDS. Preserve the upstream "don't spin on fatal errors" intent for layouts that permit MDS fallback. For layouts with FF_FLAGS_NO_IO_THRU_MDS set, mark the layout for return and request PNFS_TRY_AGAIN instead; if the server cannot supply a usable layout the failure now surfaces cleanly via pnfs_update_layout(), rather than via silent MDS I/O that contradicts the flag. ff_layout_alloc_lseg() decodes the filehandle-version array count from the flexfiles layout body. The value is used as the count for kzalloc_objs(), and the current code only rejects NULL. A zero count yields ZERO_SIZE_PTR, which can be stored in dss_info->fh_versions even though later flexfiles paths assume that at least one filehandle version exists. Reject fh_count == 0 before the allocation, matching the existing zero version_count validation in the flexfiles GETDEVICEINFO parser. 2026-06-08nfs: replace NFS_FILEID() and nfsi->fileid with inode->i_inoJeff Layton
Now that inode->i_ino stores the full 64-bit NFS fileid, replace all uses of NFS_FILEID(), set_nfs_fileid(), and direct nfsi->fileid accesses with inode->i_ino throughout the NFS client. Remove the NFS_FILEID() and set_nfs_fileid() helper functions from include/linux/nfs_fs.h since they are no longer needed. Also fix two pre-existing truncation bugs in nfs4trace.h where fileid trace fields were declared as u32 instead of u64. nfs4_ff_alloc_deviceid_node() reads version_count from XDR without checking it is non-zero. When a malicious NFS server sends a pNFS LAYOUTGET response with version_count=0, kcalloc(0, ...) returns ZERO_SIZE_PTR (0x10). The subsequent ds_versions[0] access in nfs4_ff_layout_ds_version() and other callers dereferences this invalid pointer, causing an out-of-bounds read. Add a check for version_count == 0 after parsing it from XDR, before the allocation. The OOB read was confirmed with KASAN: null-ptr-deref in range [0x0000000000000010-0x0000000000000017] from accessing ZERO_SIZE_PTR. 2026-03-06treewide: change inode->i_ino from unsigned long to u64Jeff Layton
On 32-bit architectures, unsigned long is only 32 bits wide, which causes 64-bit inode numbers to be silently truncated. Several filesystems (NFS, XFS, BTRFS, etc.) can generate inode numbers that exceed 32 bits, and this truncation can lead to inode number collisions and other subtle bugs on 32-bit systems. Change the type of inode->i_ino from unsigned long to u64 to ensure that inode numbers are always represented as 64-bit values regardless of architecture. Update all format specifiers treewide from %lu/%lx to %llu/%llx to match the new type, along with corresponding local variable types. This is the bulk treewide conversion. Earlier patches in this series handled trace events separately to allow trace field reordering for better struct packing on 32-bit. This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) In nfs4_ff_alloc_deviceid_node(), if the allocation for ds_versions fails, the function jumps to the out_scratch label without freeing the already allocated dsaddrs list, leading to a memory leak. Fix this by jumping to the out_err_drain_dsaddrs label, which properly frees the dsaddrs list before cleaning up other resources. Typo in ff_lseg_match_mirrors makes the diff ineffective. This results in merge happening all the time. Merge happening all the time is problematic because it marks lsegs invalid. Marking lsegs invalid causes all outstanding IO to get restarted with EAGAIN and connections to get closed. Closing connections constantly triggers race conditions in the RDMA implementation... When an applications get killed (SIGTERM/SIGINT) while pNFS client performs a connection to DS, client ends in an infinite loop of connect-disconnect. This source of the issue, it that flexfilelayoutdev#nfs4_ff_layout_prepare_ds gets an error on nfs4_pnfs_ds_connect with status ERESTARTSYS, which is set by rpc_signal_task, but the error is treated as transient, thus retried. The issue is reproducible with Ctrl+C the following script(there should be ~1000 files in a directory, client should must not have any connections to DSes): ``` echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches for i in * do head -1 $i done ``` The change aims to propagate the nfs4_ff_layout_prepare_ds error state to the caller that can decide whatever this is a retryable error or not. 2025-06-26NFSv4/flexfiles: Fix handling of NFS level errors in I/OTrond Myklebust
Allow the flexfiles error handling to recognise NFS level errors (as opposed to RPC level errors) and handle them separately. The main motivator is the NFSERR_PERM errors that get returned if the NFS client connects to the data server through a port number that is lower than 1024. In that case, the client should disconnect and retry a READ on a different data server, or it should retry a WRITE after reconnecting. 2025-05-28NFS: always probe for LOCALIO support asynchronouslyMike Snitzer
It was reported that NFS client mounts of AWS Elastic File System (EFS) volumes is slow, this is because the AWS firewall disallows LOCALIO (because it doesn't consider the use of NFS_LOCALIO_PROGRAM valid), see: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2335129 Switch to performing the LOCALIO probe asynchronously to address the potential for the NFS LOCALIO protocol being disallowed and/or slowed by the remote server's response. While at it, fix nfs_local_probe_async() to always take/put a reference on the nfs_client that is using the LOCALIO protocol. Also, unexport the nfs_local_probe() symbol and make it private to fs/nfs/localio.c This change has the side-effect of initially issuing reads, writes and commits over the wire via SUNRPC until the LOCALIO probe completes. 2025-04-27nfs: don't share pNFS DS connections between net namespacesJeff Layton
Currently, different NFS clients can share the same DS connections, even when they are in different net namespaces. If a containerized client creates a DS connection, another container can find and use it. When the first client exits, the connection will close which can lead to stalls in other clients. Add a net namespace pointer to struct nfs4_pnfs_ds, and compare those value to the caller's netns in _data_server_lookup_locked() when searching for a nfs4_pnfs_ds to match. If "softerr" mount is used, use 'io_maxretrans' to limit the number of attempts to get a layout segment. This commit switches from leaning heavily on NFSD's filecache (in terms of GC'd nfsd_files) back to caching nfsd_files in the client. A later commit will add the callback mechanism needed to allow NFSD to force the NFS client to cleanup all cached nfsd_files. Add nfs_fh_localio_init() and 'struct nfs_fh_localio' to cache opened nfsd_file(s) (both a RO and RW nfsd_file is able to be opened and cached for a given nfs_fh). Update nfs_local_open_fh() to cache the nfsd_file once it is opened using __nfs_local_open_fh(). Introduce nfs_close_local_fh() to clear the cached open nfsd_files and call nfs_to_nfsd_file_put_local(). Refcounting is such that: - nfs_local_open_fh() is paired with nfs_close_local_fh(). - __nfs_local_open_fh() is paired with nfs_to_nfsd_file_put_local(). - nfs_local_file_get() is paired with nfs_local_file_put(). This is inconsistent with the rest of the users of mirror_ds, which have if (IS_ERR_OR_NULL(mirror_ds)) to keep from tripping over this exact scenario. Fix this up in ff_layout_cancel_io() to make sure we don't panic when we get an error. I also spot checked all the other instances of checking mirror_ds and we appear to be doing the correct checks everywhere, only unconditionally dereferencing mirror_ds when we know it would be valid. 2022-11-01cred: Do not default to init_cred in prepare_kernel_cred()Kees Cook
A common exploit pattern for ROP attacks is to abuse prepare_kernel_cred() in order to construct escalated privileges[1]. Instead of providing a short-hand argument (NULL) to the "daemon" argument to indicate using init_cred as the base cred, require that "daemon" is always set to an actual task. Replace all existing callers that were passing NULL with &init_task. Future attacks will need to have sufficiently powerful read/write primitives to have found an appropriately privileged task and written it to the ROP stack as an argument to succeed, which is similarly difficult to the prior effort needed to escalate privileges before struct cred existed: locate the current cred and overwrite the uid member. This has the added benefit of meaning that prepare_kernel_cred() can no longer exceed the privileges of the init task, which may have changed from the original init_cred (e.g. dropping capabilities from the bounding set).
