2026-08-17NFSv4/flexfiles: support loosely coupled data serversJeuk Kim
A flexfiles storage device is tightly coupled to the MDS only when the decoded ds_versions[0].tightly_coupled flag is set (RFC 8435, sections 2.3 and 4.1). The client currently ignores that flag and treats every data server as tightly coupled, which breaks I/O to loosely coupled DSes. Two things force that assumption on an NFSv4.1+ DS: 1) nfs4_set_ds_client() always sets NFS_CS_PNFS on the new client, so EXCHANGE_ID is sent with EXCHGID4_FLAG_USE_PNFS_DS. 2) nfs4_init_ds_session() then calls is_ds_client() and returns -ENODEV if the reply does not carry EXCHGID4_FLAG_USE_PNFS_DS. A loosely coupled DS is just a normal NFS server and does not act in the pNFS DS role, so the client must not require it to advertise that role. Thread the ds_versions[0].tightly_coupled flag from the flexfiles driver down to the DS connect path. When it is false, skip both the NFS_CS_PNFS flag and the is_ds_client() check. The file layout driver always passes true because NFSv4.1 file layout data servers use the pNFS DS role. 2026-08-17NFS/localio: remove dead FLUSH_SYNC handling from nfs_local_commitMike Snitzer
nfs_local_commit() is reached only through nfs_initiate_commit(), and every path that supplies its "how" argument has already cleared FLUSH_SYNC: __nfs_commit_inode() strips it (how &= ~FLUSH_SYNC) before dispatch and does its own waiting via wait_on_commit(), while the O_DIRECT path passes how=0. filelayout issues its DS commit with a NULL localio, so it never enters nfs_local_commit() at all. The FLUSH_SYNC branch has therefore been dead since it was introduced with commit 70ba381e1a43 ("nfs: add LOCALIO support"). Remove the never-taken FLUSH_SYNC branch along with the completion plumbing it was the sole user of: the struct nfs_local_fsync_ctx::done member, its initialization, and the complete() call in nfs_local_fsync_work(). With the branch gone the "how" parameter is unused, so drop it from nfs_local_commit() and its callers. No functional change. 2026-08-17NFSv4: remove callback IDR entry on client allocation failureRuoyu Wang
nfs4_alloc_client() allocates an NFSv4.0 callback identifier before it finishes setting up the client. If any later initialization step fails, the error path frees the nfs_client directly with nfs_free_client(). That bypasses nfs_put_client(), which is where the callback IDR entry is removed during normal teardown. A failed allocation can therefore leave cb_ident_idr pointing at a freed nfs_client. A later NFSv4.0 callback lookup by cb_ident would find the stale pointer and take a reference to it. Make the callback IDR removal helper callable by the allocation failure path, and remove the callback identifier before freeing the client. This was found by a local static-analysis checker for publish-before-free lifetime bugs and confirmed by manual inspection. 2026-07-31Remove excl arg to ->create inode_operationNeilBrown
The only time that 'false' is passed as the 'excl' arg to the ->create inode_operation is in lookup_open() when ->atomic_open is not provided by the parent directory. *all* directory inode_operations which do not have ->atomic_open completely ignore the 'excl' arg. Therefore we don't need the 'excl' arg. Those few ->create operations which pay attention to the arg are only ever called with a value of 'true'. We remove that arg and change all ->create operations to behave as those thhe arg were 'true'. 2026-07-08NFS: Charge unstable writes by request size, not folio sizeBenjamin Coddington
nfs_folio_mark_unstable() and nfs_folio_clear_commit() charge and uncharge NR_WRITEBACK/WB_WRITEBACK by folio_nr_pages(folio) once per *request* added to or removed from a commit list. This is correct only when a folio has a single associated request. When pg_test splits a folio into N sub-folio requests (e.g. pNFS flexfiles striping with a stripe unit smaller than the folio size, or plain wsize-limited splitting), each of the N requests independently charges the whole folio's page count, inflating the accounting by a factor of N per folio. With large folios and small stripe units this reaches multiple orders of magnitude: a 2 MiB folio split into 512 4 KiB requests can charge up to 512x its real size, pushing global dirty+writeback accounting past the system's dirty threshold and forcing every buffered writer on the host into the hard-throttle path, including unrelated in-kernel NFS server threads sharing the box. Charge each request only for the pages it actually covers. 2026-05-11nfs: Implement fileattr_get for case sensitivityChuck Lever
An NFS server re-exporting an NFS mount point needs to report the case sensitivity behavior of the underlying filesystem to its clients. NFSD's attribute encoder obtains that information by calling vfs_fileattr_get() on the lower filesystem, so the NFS client must implement fileattr_get to surface what it learned from its own server. The NFS client already retrieves case sensitivity information from servers during mount via PATHCONF (NFSv3) or the FATTR4_CASE_INSENSITIVE/FATTR4_CASE_PRESERVING attributes (NFSv4). Expose this information through fileattr_get by reporting the FS_XFLAG_CASEFOLD and FS_XFLAG_CASENONPRESERVING flags. NFSv2 lacks PATHCONF support, so mounts using that protocol version default to standard POSIX behavior: case-sensitive and case-preserving. PATHCONF is now invoked unconditionally for NFSv2 and NFSv3 mounts so the case-sensitivity capabilities are established even when the user pins server->namelen with the namlen= mount option. That option is orthogonal to case handling, and skipping PATHCONF because namelen was already known would leave the caps unset. The two capability bits carry opposite polarity because their POSIX defaults differ. Most servers are case-sensitive and case- preserving, matching "neither xflag set." NFS_CAP_CASE_INSENSITIVE is set only when the server affirms case insensitivity, so "server said no" and "server did not answer" both collapse to the case- sensitive default. NFS_CAP_CASE_NONPRESERVING follows the same pattern in the opposite direction: set only when the server affirms that it does not preserve case, so that silence or a missing attribute lands on the case-preserving default. The NFSv4 probe checks res.attr_bitmask[0] to distinguish "server said false" from "server omitted the attribute" before setting the bit. Both capability bits are cleared before each probe so a remount, an NFSv4 transparent state migration to a server with different case semantics, or a probe whose reply does not arrive does not retain stale capabilities from the prior probe. 2026-04-13NFSv4.1: Apply session size limits on clone pathTushar Sariya
nfs4_clone_server() builds a child nfs_server for same-server automounted submounts but never calls nfs4_session_limit_rwsize() or nfs4_session_limit_xasize() after nfs_clone_server(). This means the child mount can end up with rsize/wsize values that exceed the negotiated session channel limits, causing NFS4ERR_REQ_TOO_BIG and EIO on servers that enforce tight max_request_size budgets. Top-level mounts go through nfs4_server_common_setup() which calls these limiters after nfs_probe_server(). Apply the same clamping on the clone path for consistency. 2025-09-30nfs/localio: add tracepoints for misaligned DIO READ and WRITE supportMike Snitzer
Add nfs_local_dio_class and use it to create nfs_local_dio_read, nfs_local_dio_write and nfs_local_dio_misaligned trace events. These trace events show how NFS LOCALIO splits a given misaligned IO into a mix of misaligned head and/or tail extents and a DIO-aligned middle extent. While at it, fix nfs_local_probe_async() to always take/put a reference on the nfs_client that is using the LOCALIO protocol. Also, unexport the nfs_local_probe() symbol and make it private to fs/nfs/localio.c This change has the side-effect of initially issuing reads, writes and commits over the wire via SUNRPC until the LOCALIO probe completes. nfs.ko, nfsd.ko, and lockd.ko all use crc32_le(), which is available only when CONFIG_CRC32 is enabled. But the only NFS kconfig option that selected CONFIG_CRC32 was CONFIG_NFS_DEBUG, which is client-specific and did not actually guard the use of crc32_le() even on the client. The code worked around this bug by only actually calling crc32_le() when CONFIG_CRC32 is built-in, instead hard-coding '0' in other cases. This avoided randconfig build errors, and in real kernels the fallback code was unlikely to be reached since CONFIG_CRC32 is 'default y'. But, this really needs to just be done properly, especially now that I'm planning to update CONFIG_CRC32 to not be 'default y'. Therefore, make CONFIG_NFS_FS, CONFIG_NFSD, and CONFIG_LOCKD select CONFIG_CRC32. Then remove the fallback code that becomes unnecessary, as well as the selection of CONFIG_CRC32 from CONFIG_NFS_DEBUG. 2025-02-27Change inode_operations.mkdir to return struct dentry *NeilBrown
Some filesystems, such as NFS, cifs, ceph, and fuse, do not have complete control of sequencing on the actual filesystem (e.g. on a different server) and may find that the inode created for a mkdir request already exists in the icache and dcache by the time the mkdir request returns. For example, if the filesystem is mounted twice the directory could be visible on the other mount before it is on the original mount, and a pair of name_to_handle_at(), open_by_handle_at() calls could instantiate the directory inode with an IS_ROOT() dentry before the first mkdir returns. This means that the dentry passed to ->mkdir() may not be the one that is associated with the inode after the ->mkdir() completes. Some callers need to interact with the inode after the ->mkdir completes and they currently need to perform a lookup in the (rare) case that the dentry is no longer hashed. This lookup-after-mkdir requires that the directory remains locked to avoid races. Planned future patches to lock the dentry rather than the directory will mean that this lookup cannot be performed atomically with the mkdir. To remove this barrier, this patch changes ->mkdir to return the resulting dentry if it is different from the one passed in. Possible returns are: NULL - the directory was created and no other dentry was used ERR_PTR() - an error occurred non-NULL - this other dentry was spliced in This patch only changes file-systems to return "ERR_PTR(err)" instead of "err" or equivalent transformations. Subsequent patches will make further changes to some file-systems to return a correct dentry. Not all filesystems reliably result in a positive hashed dentry: - NFS, cifs, hostfs will sometimes need to perform a lookup of the name to get inode information. Races could result in this returning something different. Note that this lookup is non-atomic which is what we are trying to avoid. Placing the lookup in filesystem code means it only happens when the filesystem has no other option. - kernfs and tracefs leave the dentry negative and the ->revalidate operation ensures that lookup will be called to correctly populate the dentry. This could be fixed but I don't think it is important to any of the users of vfs_mkdir() which look at the dentry. The recommendation to use d_drop();d_splice_alias() is ugly but fits with current practice. A planned future patch will change this. 2025-01-14nfs: cache all open LOCALIO nfsd_file(s) in clientMike Snitzer
This commit switches from leaning heavily on NFSD's filecache (in terms of GC'd nfsd_files) back to caching nfsd_files in the client. A later commit will add the callback mechanism needed to allow NFSD to force the NFS client to cleanup all cached nfsd_files. Add nfs_fh_localio_init() and 'struct nfs_fh_localio' to cache opened nfsd_file(s) (both a RO and RW nfsd_file is able to be opened and cached for a given nfs_fh). Update nfs_local_open_fh() to cache the nfsd_file once it is opened using __nfs_local_open_fh(). Introduce nfs_close_local_fh() to clear the cached open nfsd_files and call nfs_to_nfsd_file_put_local(). Refcounting is such that: - nfs_local_open_fh() is paired with nfs_close_local_fh(). - __nfs_local_open_fh() is paired with nfs_to_nfsd_file_put_local(). - nfs_local_file_get() is paired with nfs_local_file_put(). 2024-11-28nfs: ignore SB_RDONLY when mounting nfsLi Lingfeng
When exporting only one file system with fsid=0 on the server side, the client alternately uses the ro/rw mount options to perform the mount operation, and a new vfsmount is generated each time. [root@localhost ~]# We expected that after mounting with the ro option, using the rw option to mount again would return EBUSY, but the actual situation was not the case. As shown above, when mounting for the first time, a superblock with the ro flag will be generated, and at the same time, in do_new_mount_fc --> do_add_mount, it detects that the superblock corresponding to the current target directory is inconsistent with the currently generated one (path->mnt->mnt_sb != newmnt->mnt.mnt_sb), and a new vfsmount will be generated. When mounting with the rw option for the second time, since no matching superblock can be found in the fs_supers list, a new superblock with the rw flag will be generated again. The superblock in use (ro) is different from the newly generated superblock (rw), and a new vfsmount will be generated again. When mounting with the ro option for the third time, the superblock (ro) is found in fs_supers, the superblock in use (rw) is different from the found superblock (ro), and a new vfsmount will be generated again. We can switch between ro/rw through remount, and only one superblock needs to be generated, thus avoiding the problem of repeated generation of vfsmount caused by switching superblocks. 2024-09-23nfs/localio: use dedicated workqueues for filesystem read and writeTrond Myklebust
For localio access, don't call filesystem read() and write() routines directly. This solves two problems: 1) localio writes need to use a normal (non-memreclaim) unbound workqueue. This avoids imposing new requirements on how underlying filesystems process frontend IO, which would cause a large amount of work to update all filesystems. Without this change, when XFS starts getting low on space, XFS flushes work on a non-memreclaim work queue, which causes a priority inversion problem: 00573 workqueue: WQ_MEM_RECLAIM writeback:wb_workfn is flushing !WQ_MEM_RECLAIM xfs-sync/vdc:xfs_flush_inodes_worker 00573 WARNING: CPU: 6 PID: 8525 at kernel/workqueue.c:3706 check_flush_dependency+0x2a4/0x328 00573 Modules linked in: 00573 CPU: 6 PID: 8525 Comm: kworker/u71:5 Not tainted 6.10.0-rc3-ktest-00032-g2b0a133403ab #18502 00573 Hardware name: linux,dummy-virt (DT) 00573 Workqueue: writeback wb_workfn (flush-0:33) 00573 pstate: 400010c5 (nZcv daIF -PAN -UAO -TCO -DIT +SSBS BTYPE=--) 00573 pc : check_flush_dependency+0x2a4/0x328 00573 lr : check_flush_dependency+0x2a4/0x328 00573 sp : ffff0000c5f06bb0 00573 x29: ffff0000c5f06bb0 x28: ffff0000c998a908 x27: 1fffe00019331521 00573 x26: ffff0000d0620900 x25: ffff0000c5f06ca0 x24: ffff8000828848c0 00573 x23: 1fffe00018be0d8e x22: ffff0000c1210000 x21: ffff0000c75fde00 00573 x20: ffff800080bfd258 x19: ffff0000cad63400 x18: ffff0000cd3a4810 00573 x17: 0000000000000000 x16: 0000000000000000 x15: ffff800080508d98 00573 x14: 0000000000000000 x13: 204d49414c434552 x12: 1fffe0001b6eeab2 00573 x11: ffff60001b6eeab2 x10: dfff800000000000 x9 : ffff60001b6eeab3 00573 x8 : 0000000000000001 x7 : 00009fffe491154e x6 : ffff0000db775593 00573 x5 : ffff0000db775590 x4 : ffff0000db775590 x3 : 0000000000000000 00573 x2 : 0000000000000027 x1 : ffff600018be0d62 x0 : dfff800000000000 00573 Call trace: 00573 check_flush_dependency+0x2a4/0x328 00573 __flush_work+0x184/0x5c8 00573 flush_work+0x18/0x28 00573 xfs_flush_inodes+0x68/0x88 00573 xfs_file_buffered_write+0x128/0x6f0 00573 xfs_file_write_iter+0x358/0x448 00573 nfs_local_doio+0x854/0x1568 00573 nfs_initiate_pgio+0x214/0x418 00573 nfs_generic_pg_pgios+0x304/0x480 00573 nfs_pageio_doio+0xe8/0x240 00573 nfs_pageio_complete+0x160/0x480 00573 nfs_writepages+0x300/0x4f0 00573 do_writepages+0x12c/0x4a0 00573 __writeback_single_inode+0xd4/0xa68 00573 writeback_sb_inodes+0x470/0xcb0 00573 __writeback_inodes_wb+0xb0/0x1d0 00573 wb_writeback+0x594/0x808 00573 wb_workfn+0x5e8/0x9e0 00573 process_scheduled_works+0x53c/0xd90 00573 worker_thread+0x370/0x8c8 00573 kthread+0x258/0x2e8 00573 ret_from_fork+0x10/0x20 2) Some filesystem writeback routines can end up taking up a lot of stack space (particularly XFS). Instead of risking running over due to the extra overhead from the NFS stack, we should just call these routines from a workqueue job. Since we need to do this to address 1) above we're able to avoid possibly blowing the stack "for free". Use of dedicated workqueues improves performance over using the system_unbound_wq. Also, the creds used to open the file are used to override_creds() in both nfs_local_call_read() and nfs_local_call_write() -- otherwise the workqueue could have elevated capabilities (which the caller may not). Lastly, care is taken to set PF_LOCAL_THROTTLE | PF_MEMALLOC_NOIO in nfs_do_local_write() to avoid writeback deadlocks. The PF_LOCAL_THROTTLE flag prevents deadlocks in balance_dirty_pages() by causing writes to only be throttled against other writes to the same bdi (it keeps the throttling local). Normally all writes to bdi(s) are throttled equally (after throughput factors are allowed for). The PF_MEMALLOC_NOIO flag prevents the lower filesystem IO from causing memory reclaim to re-enter filesystems or IO devices and so prevents deadlocks from occuring where IO that cleans pages is waiting on IO to complete. 2024-09-23nfs: add LOCALIO supportWeston Andros Adamson
Add client support for bypassing NFS for localhost reads, writes, and commits. This is only useful when the client and the server are running on the same host. nfs_local_probe() is stubbed out, later commits will enable client and server handshake via a Linux-only LOCALIO auxiliary RPC protocol. This has dynamic binding with the nfsd module (via nfs_localio module which is part of nfs_common). LOCALIO will only work if nfsd is already loaded. The "localio_enabled" nfs kernel module parameter can be used to disable and enable the ability to use LOCALIO support. CONFIG_NFS_LOCALIO enables NFS client support for LOCALIO. Lastly, LOCALIO uses an nfsd_file to initiate all IO. To make proper use of nfsd_file (and nfsd's filecache) its lifetime (duration before nfsd_file_put is called) must extend until after commit, read and write operations. So rather than immediately drop the nfsd_file reference in nfs_local_open_fh(), that doesn't happen until nfs_local_pgio_release() for read/write and not until nfs_local_release_commit_data() for commit. The same applies to the reference held on nfsd's nn->nfsd_serv. Both objects' lifetimes and associated references are managed through calls to nfs_to->nfsd_file_put_local().
