Currently, legacy_io and legacy_mem are dynamically allocated and created
by pci_create_legacy_files(), with pci_adjust_legacy_attr() updating the
attributes at runtime on Alpha to rename them and shift the size for sparse
addressing.
Convert to four static const attributes (legacy_io, legacy_io_sparse,
legacy_mem, legacy_mem_sparse) with .is_bin_visible() callbacks that use
pci_legacy_has_sparse() to select the appropriate variant per bus. The
sizes are compile-time constants and .size is set directly on each
attribute.
Register the groups in pcibus_groups[] under a HAVE_PCI_LEGACY guard so the
driver model handles creation and removal automatically.
Stub out pci_create_legacy_files() and pci_remove_legacy_files() as the
dynamic creation is no longer needed. Remove the __weak
pci_adjust_legacy_attr(), Alpha's override, and its declaration from both
Alpha and PowerPC asm/pci.h headers.

Currently, Alpha's sparse/dense legacy attribute handling is done via
pci_adjust_legacy_attr(), which updates dynamically allocated attributes at
runtime. The upcoming conversion to static attributes needs a way to
determine sparse support at visibility check time.
Add a __weak pci_legacy_has_sparse() that returns false by default. Alpha
overrides it to check has_sparse() on the bus host controller.

Currently, pci_mmap_legacy_page_range() reads the legacy resource size from
bus->legacy_mem->size or bus->legacy_io->size. This couples the mmap
bounds check to the struct pci_bus fields that will be removed when legacy
attributes are converted to static definitions.
Compute the size directly using PCI_LEGACY_MEM_SIZE (0x100000) and
PCI_LEGACY_IO_SIZE (0xffff) macros, and shift by 5 bits for sparse systems.

Previously, Alpha's PCI resource files (resourceN, resourceN_sparse,
resourceN_dense) were dynamically created by pci_create_resource_files(),
which overrides the generic __weak implementation. The previous code
allocated bin_attributes at runtime and managed them via the res_attr[] and
res_attr_wc[] fields in struct pci_dev.
Convert to static const attributes with three attribute groups (plain,
sparse, dense), each with an .is_bin_visible() callback that checks
resource length, has_sparse(), and sparse_mem_mmap_fits(). A .bin_size()
callback provides the resource size to the kernfs node, with the sparse
variant shifting by 5 bits for byte-level addressing.
Register the groups via ARCH_PCI_DEV_GROUPS so the driver model handles
creation and removal automatically.
Use the new pci_resource_is_mem() helper for the type check, replacing the
open-coded bitwise flag test.
Finally, remove pci_create_resource_files(), pci_remove_resource_files(),
pci_create_attr(), and pci_create_one_attr() which are no longer needed.

Add macros for declaring static binary attributes for Alpha's PCI resource
files:
- pci_dev_resource_attr(), for dense/BWX systems (mmap dense)
- pci_dev_resource_sparse_attr(), for sparse systems (mmap sparse)
- pci_dev_resource_dense_attr(), for dense companion files (mmap dense)
Each macro creates a const bin_attribute with the BAR index stored in the
.private property and the appropriate .mmap() callback.

Remove the WARN() that fires when userspace attempts to mmap beyond the BAR
bounds. The check still returns 0 to reject the mapping, but the warning
is excessive for normal operation.
A similar warning was removed from the PCI core in the commit 3b519e4ea618
("PCI: fix size checks for mmap() on /proc/bus/pci files").

Currently, __pci_mmap_fits() computes the BAR size using
"pci_resource_len() - 1", which wraps to a large value when the BAR length
is zero, causing the bounds check to incorrectly succeed.
Add an early return for empty resources.

Replace direct pdev->resource[] accesses with pci_resource_n(), and
open-coded res->flags type checks with pci_resource_is_mem() and
pci_resource_start() helpers.
While at it, move the pci_resource_n() call directly into
pcibios_resource_to_bus() and drop the local struct resource pointer.
No functional changes intended.

Currently, Alpha's pci_create_one_attr() stores a resource pointer in
attr->private, and pci_mmap_resource() loops through all BARs to find
the matching index.
Store the BAR index directly in attr->private and retrieve the resource via
pci_resource_n(). This eliminates the loop and aligns with the convention
used by the generic PCI sysfs code.
The PCI core change was first added in the commit dca40b186b75 ("PCI: Use
BAR index in sysfs attr->private instead of resource pointer").

Currently, Alpha's pci_mmap_resource() does not check
security_locked_down(LOCKDOWN_PCI_ACCESS) before allowing userspace to mmap
PCI BARs.
The generic version has had this check since commit eb627e17727e ("PCI:
Lock down BAR access when the kernel is locked down") to prevent DMA
attacks when the kernel is locked down.
Add the same check to Alpha's pci_mmap_resource().

strncpy() has no remaining callers in the kernel[1]. Remove the
alpha-specific assembly implementation and __HAVE_ARCH_STRNCPY define,
falling back to the generic version in lib/string.c.
The __stxncpy helper (stxncpy.S/ev6-stxncpy.S) is retained as it is
still used by strncat.

Pull interrupt core updates from Thomas Gleixner:
- Rework of /proc/interrupt handling:
/proc/interrupts was subject to micro optimizations for a long time,
but most of the low hanging fruit was left on the table. This rework
addresses the major time consuming issues:
- Printing a long series of zeros one by one via a format string
instead of counting subsequent zeros and emitting a string
constant.
- Simplify and cache the conditions whether interrupts should be
printed
- Use a proper iteration over the interrupt descriptor xarray
instead of walking and testing one by one.
- Provide helper functions for the architecture code to emit the
architecture specific counters
- Convert the counter structure in x86 to an array, which
simplifies the output and add mechanisms to suppress unused
architecture interrupts, which just occupy space for nothing.
Adopt the new core mechanisms.
This adjusts the gdb scripts related to interrupt counter statistics
to work with the new mechanisms.
- Prevent a string overflow in the /proc/irq/$N/ directory name
creation code.

- Reduce pipe->mutex contention by pre-allocating pages outside the
lock in anon_pipe_write().
anon_pipe_write() called alloc_page() once per page while holding
pipe->mutex. The allocation can sleep doing direct reclaim and runs
memcg charging, which extends the critical section and stalls any
concurrent reader on the same mutex. Now up to 8 pages are
pre-allocated before the mutex is taken, leftovers are recycled
into the per-pipe tmp_page[] cache before unlock, and any remainder
is released after unlock, keeping the allocator out of the critical
section on both sides. On a writers x readers sweep with 64KB
writes against a 1 MB pipe throughput improves 6-28% and average
write latency drops 5-22%; under memory pressure - when the cost of
holding the mutex across reclaim is highest - throughput improves
21-48% and latency drops 17-33%. The microbenchmark is added to
selftests.
- uaccess/sockptr: fix the ignored_trailing logic in
copy_struct_to_user() to behave as documented and the usize check
in copy_struct_from_sockptr() for user pointers, and add
copy_struct_{from,to}_bounce_buffer() and copy_struct_to_sockptr()
helpers for upcoming users (IPPROTO_SMBDIRECT, IPPROTO_QUIC).
- bpf: add a sleepable bpf_real_inode() kfunc that resolves the real
inode backing a dentry via d_real_inode(). On overlayfs the inode
attached to the dentry doesn't carry the underlying device
information; this is used by the filesystem restriction BPF program
that was merged into systemd.
- docs: add guidelines for submitting new filesystems, motivated by
the maintenance burden abandoned and untestable filesystems impose
on VFS developers, blocking infrastructure work like folio
conversions and iomap migration.
Fixes:
- libfs: set SB_I_NOEXEC and SB_I_NODEV by default in init_pseudo()
and drop the now-redundant assignments in callers. This began as a
one-line dma-buf fix for a path_noexec() warning; a pseudo
filesystem has no reason not to set SB_I_NOEXEC. All init_pseudo()
callers were audited: the only visible effect is on dma-buf where
SB_I_NOEXEC silences the warning.
- Handle set_blocksize() failures in legacy filesystems (bfs, hpfs,
qnx4, jfs, befs, affs, isofs, minix, ntfs3, omfs). Mounting a
device with a sector size > PAGE_SIZE crashed roughly half of them;
the rest had the same missing error handling pattern. Plus a
follow-up releasing the superblock buffer_head when setting the
minix v3 block size fails.
- mount: honour SB_NOUSER in the new mount API.
- fs/fcntl: fix a SOFTIRQ-unsafe lock order in fasync signaling by
switching the process-group paths of send_sigio() and send_sigurg()
from read_lock(&tasklist_lock) to RCU, matching the single-PID
path.
- vfs: add an FS_USERNS_DELEGATABLE flag and set it for NFS, fixing
delegated NFS mounts (fsopen() in a container with the mount
performed by a privileged daemon) that broke when non-init
s_user_ns was tied to FS_USERNS_MOUNT.
- selftests/namespaces: fix a hang in nsid_test where an unreaped
grandchild kept the TAP pipe write-end open, a waitpid(-1) race in
listns_efault_test, and a false FAIL on kernels without listns()
where the tests should SKIP.
- filelock: fix the break_lease() stub signature for
CONFIG_FILE_LOCKING=n.
- init/initramfs_test: wait for the async initramfs unpacking before
running; the test and do_populate_rootfs() share the parser state.
- fs/coredump: reduce redundant log noise in
validate_coredump_safety().
- iomap: pass the correct length to fserror_report_io() in
__iomap_write_begin().
- backing-file: fix the backing_file_open() kerneldoc.
Cleanups:
- initramfs: refactor the cpio hex header parsing to use hex2bin()
instead of the hand-rolled simple_strntoul() which is reverted, and
extend the initramfs KUnit tests to cover header fields with 0x
prefixes.
- Replace __get_free_pages() and friends with kmalloc()/kzalloc()
across quota, proc, ocfs2/dlm, nilfs2, nfs, nfsd, libfs, jfs, jbd2,
isofs, fuse, select, namespace, configfs, binfmt_misc, bfs, and the
do_mounts init code - part of the larger work of replacing page
allocator calls with kmalloc().
- Use clear_and_wake_up_bit() in unlock_buffer() and
journal_end_buffer_io_sync() instead of open-coding the sequence.
- Drop unused VFS exports: unexport drop_super_exclusive(), remove
start_removing_user_path_at(), and fold __start_removing_path()

- fs/read_write: narrow the __kernel_write() export with

- vfs: uapi: retire octal and hex constants in favor of (1 << n) for
the O_ flags. Finding a free bit for a new flag across the
architectures was needlessly hard with the mixed bases.
- dcache: add extra sanity checks of dead dentries in dentry_free()
via a new DENTRY_WARN_ONCE() that also prints d_flags.
- iov_iter: use kmemdup_array() in dup_iter() to harden the
allocation against multiplication overflow.

"Features:
- Add O_EMPTYPATH to openat(2)/openat2(2). To get an operable file
descriptor from an O_PATH file descriptor it is possible to use
openat(fd, ".", O_DIRECTORY) for directories, but other file types
require going through open("/proc/<pid>/fd/<nr>") and thus depend
on a functioning procfs.
With O_EMPTYPATH an empty path string is accepted and LOOKUP_EMPTY
is set at path resolution time, allowing to reopen the file behind
the file descriptor directly. Selftests are included.
- Add an OPENAT2_REGULAR flag for openat2(2) which refuses to open
anything but regular files with the new EFTYPE error code.
This implements the "ability to only open regular files" feature
requested by userspace via uapi-group.org and protects services
from being redirected to fifos, device nodes, and friends.
All atomic_open implementations were audited for OPENAT2_REGULAR
handling. Explicit checks were added to ceph, gfs2, nfs (v4), and
cifs/smb - these are the filesystems whose atomic_open can
encounter an existing non-regular file and would otherwise call
finish_open() on it or return a misleading error code.
The remaining implementations (9p, fuse, vboxsf, nfs v2/v3) only
call finish_open() on freshly created files and use
finish_no_open() for lookup hits, letting the VFS catch non-regular
files via the do_open() safety net.
Cleanups:
- Migrate the openat2 selftests to the kselftest harness and move
them under selftests/filesystems/. The tests were written in the
early days of selftests' TAP support and the modern kselftest
harness is much easier to follow and maintain. The contents of the
tests are unchanged and the new emptypath tests are ported on top.
- Make the LAST_XXX last-type constants private to fs/namei.c. The
only user outside of fs/namei.c was ksmbd which only needs to know
whether the last component is a regular one, so
vfs_path_parent_lookup() now performs the LAST_NORM check
internally. The ints are replaced with a dedicated enum last_type"

A recent build failure[1] exposed the diffculty of working with the
current octal and hex definitions of O_ flags when trying to find a gap
for a new flag. This difficulty is compounded by the fact that O_ flags
may have architectural specific values.
Replace the hex/octal #defines, which are hard to parse when looking for
free bits, with explicit bit shifts like (1 << 11). Also, add comments
that identify which architectures redefine some of the seemingly free
("cursed") bits in uapi/asm-generic/fcntl.h. These should not be used to
define new O_ flags (for now, at least).
The translastion was done with Claude Opus 4.8, and verified with a
(non-AI) gawk script. The accounting of which architectures claim
which bit-gaps in uapi/asm-generic/fcntl.h is also done by hand.

Quite some architectures have four character wide acronyms for architecture
specific interrupts like IPI, NMI, etc.
The default precision of printing the Linux device interrupt numbers is
three, which causes quite some code to play games with adding or omitting
space after the acronym and the colon in order to keep the per CPU numbers
properly aligned.
Increase the default number precision to four in the core code and get rid
of the space games all over the place. At the same time align all
architecture specific descriptor texts left so that they show up in the
same column as the interrupt chip names, which makes the output more
uniform accross architectures. Fix up the GDB script to this new scheme as
well.

On real hardware, panic and machine reboot may not flush hardware cache
to memory. This means the persistent ring buffer, which relies on a
coherent state of memory, may not have its events written to the buffer
and they may be lost. Moreover, there may be inconsistency with the
counters which are used for validation of the integrity of the
persistent ring buffer which may cause all data to be discarded.
To avoid this issue, stop recording of the ring buffer on panic and
flush the cache of the ring buffer's memory.

Introduce a new error code EFTYPE for wrong file type operations.
EFTYPE is already used in BSD systems like FreeBSD and macOS.
This will be used by the upcoming OPENAT2_REGULAR flag support to
return a specific error when a path doesn't refer to a regular file.

The mdacon driver supports using ISA MDA or Hercules-compatible display
adapters as a secondary text console. This was commonly used in the
1990s and earlier for debugging software which took over the primary
display. It is highly unlikely anyone is doing so nowadays because
serial consoles and much better methods of debugging exist.
The driver is not enabled by any defconfig, nor any of the
dozens of distro configs collected at [1]. It has been relegated to VTs
13-16 since commit 0b9cf3aa6b1e ("mdacon messing up default vc's - set
default to vc13-16 again") in Linux 2.6.27 (and before Linux 2.5.53 -
see the link in the message of the above commit). The change in 2.6.27
was done because it was incorrectly detecting non-MDA adapters as MDA
and taking over all VTs, rendering them unusable.
Furthermore, vgacon supports using MDA/Hercules-compatible adapters as
the primary text console, so any systems with only one of these
adapters were already using vgacon and will not experience any loss in
functionality from the removal of this driver.
Given all of these factors, the mdacon driver is likely entirely
unused. Remove it.

about these deletions multiple times in the past and every time
someone wanted the code to stay. It is never very clear to me how many
of those people actually use the code vs are just nostalgic to see it

stuff. Nobody stepped up to maintain the kernel code.

Similar to the hamachi driver, the yellowfin driver supports hardware
that is over two decades old and no longer in active use.
Since yellowfin was the last remaining driver in the packetengines
vendor directory, we can now safely remove the entire directory and
drop its associated references from the parent Kconfig and Makefile.
This eliminates dead code and reduces the overall maintenance burden
on the netdev subsystem.

A quite far-reaching cleanup to this code. I can't do better than to
quote Christoph:
"The XOR library used for the RAID5 parity is a bit of a mess right
now. The main file sits in crypto/ despite not being cryptography
and not using the crypto API, with the generic implementations
sitting in include/asm-generic and the arch implementations
sitting in an asm/ header in theory. The latter doesn't work for
many cases, so architectures often build the code directly into
the core kernel, or create another module for the architecture
code.
Change this to a single module in lib/ that also contains the
architecture optimizations, similar to the library work Eric

Alpha's pgprot_noncached, pgprot_writecombine, and pgprot_device are
all identity macros, so the generic pgprot_modify() produces
tautological self-comparisons that GCC warns about:
include/linux/pgtable.h:1701:25: warning: self-comparison always
evaluates to true [-Wtautological-compare]
Since all caching attributes are no-ops on Alpha, define
pgprot_modify() to simply return newprot.

Add SECCOMP and SECCOMP_FILTER support to the Alpha architecture and fix
syscall entry and ptrace issues uncovered by the seccomp-bpf selftests.
The syscall entry path is reworked to consistently track syscall state
using r0, r1 and r2:
- r1 holds the active syscall number
- r2 preserves the original syscall number for restart
- r0 carries the return value, with r19 (a3) indicating success/error
This allows syscall restarts to be permitted only for valid ERESTART*
return codes and prevents kernel-internal restart values from leaking to
userspace. The syscall tracing error marker is corrected to use the saved
syscall number slot, matching the Alpha ABI.
Additionally, implement minimal PTRACE_GETREGSET and PTRACE_SETREGSET
support for NT_PRSTATUS, exporting struct pt_regs directly. This fixes
ptrace-based seccomp tests that previously failed with -EIO.
With these changes, seccomp-bpf and ptrace syscall tests pass reliably on
Alpha.

Reduce 22 declarations of empty_zero_page to 3 and 23 declarations of
ZERO_PAGE() to 4.
Every architecture defines empty_zero_page that way or another, but for the
most of them it is always a page aligned page in BSS and most definitions
of ZERO_PAGE do virt_to_page(empty_zero_page).
Move Linus vetted x86 definition of empty_zero_page and ZERO_PAGE() to the
core MM and drop these definitions in architectures that do not implement
colored zero page (MIPS and s390).
ZERO_PAGE() remains a macro because turning it to a wrapper for a static
inline causes severe pain in header dependencies.
For the most part the change is mechanical, with these being noteworthy:
* alpha: aliased empty_zero_page with ZERO_PGE that was also used for boot
parameters. Switching to a generic empty_zero_page removes the aliasing
and keeps ZERO_PGE for boot parameters only
* arm64: uses __pa_symbol() in ZERO_PAGE() so that definition of
ZERO_PAGE() is kept intact.
* m68k/parisc/um: allocated empty_zero_page from memblock,
although they do not support zero page coloring and having it in BSS
will work fine.
* sparc64 can have empty_zero_page in BSS rather allocate it, but it
can't use virt_to_page() for BSS. Keep it's definition of ZERO_PAGE()
but instead of allocating it, make mem_map_zero point to
empty_zero_page.
* sh: used empty_zero_page for boot parameters at the very early boot.
Rename the parameters page to boot_params_page and let sh use the generic
empty_zero_page.
* hexagon: had an amusing comment about empty_zero_page
/* A handy thing to have if one has the RAM. Declared in head.S */
that unfortunately had to go :)

Move the asm/xor.h headers to lib/raid/xor/$(SRCARCH)/xor_arch.h and
include/linux/raid/xor_impl.h to lib/raid/xor/xor_impl.h so that the
xor.ko module implementation is self-contained in lib/raid/.
As this remove the asm-generic mechanism a new kconfig symbol is added to
indicate that a architecture-specific implementations exists, and
xor_arch.h should be included.

Drop the pretty confusing historic XOR_TRY_TEMPLATES and
XOR_SELECT_TEMPLATE, and instead let the architectures provide a
arch_xor_init that calls either xor_register to register candidates or
xor_force to force a specific implementation.

__find_resource_space() calculates the full extent of empty space but only
passes the aligned space to resource_alignf callback. In some situations,
the callback may choose take advantage of the free space before the
requested alignment.
Pass the full extent of the calculated empty space to resource_alignf
callback as an additional parameter.

Commit 3e86e4d74c04 ("kbuild: keep .modinfo section in
vmlinux.unstripped") added .modinfo to ELF_DETAILS while removing it
from COMMON_DISCARDS, as it was needed in vmlinux.unstripped and
ELF_DETAILS was present in all architecture specific vmlinux linker
scripts. While this shuffle is fine for vmlinux, ELF_DETAILS and
COMMON_DISCARDS may be used by other linker scripts, such as the s390
and x86 compressed boot images, which may not expect to have a .modinfo
section. In certain circumstances, this could result in a bootloader
failing to load the compressed kernel [1].
Commit ddc6cbef3ef1 ("s390/boot/vmlinux.lds.S: Ensure bzImage ends with
SecureBoot trailer") recently addressed this for the s390 bzImage but
the same bug remains for arm, parisc, and x86. The presence of .modinfo
in the x86 bzImage was the root cause of the issue worked around with
commit d50f21091358 ("kbuild: align modinfo section for Secureboot
Authenticode EDK2 compat"). misc.c in arch/x86/boot/compressed includes
lib/decompress_unzstd.c, which in turn includes lib/xxhash.c and its
MODULE_LICENSE / MODULE_DESCRIPTION macros due to the STATIC definition.
Split .modinfo out from ELF_DETAILS into its own macro and handle it in
all vmlinux linker scripts. Discard .modinfo in the places where it was
previously being discarded from being in COMMON_DISCARDS, as it has
never been necessary in those uses.

This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:
Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)
Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)
Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)
(where TYPE may also be *VAR)
The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

After the merge of the alpha and mm trees, this code does not compile,
as a parameter is missing in a call to page_table_check_pte_clear().
The parameter was re-added in commit d7b4b67eb6b3 ("mm/page_table_check:
reinstate address parameter in [__]page_table_check_pte_clear()").
The alpha-specific code was newly added in commit dd5712f3379c ("alpha:
fix user-space corruption during memory compaction").

On a 64-bit system, madvise(MADV_DONTNEED) may cause a large number of
empty PTE page table pages (such as 100GB+). To resolve this problem,
first enable MMU_GATHER_RCU_TABLE_FREE to prepare for enabling the
PT_RECLAIM feature, which resolves this problem.

Every architecture calls sparse_init() during setup_arch() although the
data structures created by sparse_init() are not used until the
initialization of the core MM.
Beside the code duplication, calling sparse_init() from architecture
specific code causes ordering differences of vmemmap and HVO
initialization on different architectures.
Move the call to sparse_init() from architecture specific code to
free_area_init() to ensure that vmemmap and HVO initialization order is
always the same.

To initialize node, zone and memory map data structures every architecture
calls free_area_init() during setup_arch() and passes it an array of zone
limits.
Beside code duplication it creates "interesting" ordering cases between
allocation and initialization of hugetlb and the memory map. Some
architectures allocate hugetlb pages very early in setup_arch() in certain
cases, some only create hugetlb CMA areas in setup_arch() and sometimes
hugetlb allocations happen mm_core_init().
With arch_zone_limits_init() helper available now on all architectures it
is no longer necessary to call free_area_init() from architecture setup
code. Rather core MM initialization can call arch_zone_limits_init() in a
single place.
This allows to unify ordering of hugetlb vs memory map allocation and
initialization.
Remove the call to free_area_init() from architecture specific code and
place it in a new mm_core_init_early() function that is called immediately
after setup_arch().
After this refactoring it is possible to consolidate hugetlb allocations
and eliminate differences in ordering of hugetlb and memory map
initialization among different architectures.
As the first step of this consolidation move hugetlb_bootmem_alloc() to
mm_core_early_init().

Patch series "arch, mm: consolidate hugetlb early reservation", v3.
Order in which early memory reservation for hugetlb happens depends on
architecture, on configuration options and on command line parameters.
Some architectures rely on the core MM to call hugetlb_bootmem_alloc()
while others call it very early to allow pre-allocation of HVO-style
vmemmap.
When hugetlb_cma is supported by an architecture it is initialized during
setup_arch() and then later hugetlb_init code needs to understand did it
happen or not.
To make everything consistent and unified, both reservation of hugetlb
memory from bootmem and creation of CMA areas for hugetlb must be called
from core MM initialization and it would have been a simple change.
However, HVO-style pre-initialization ordering requirements slightly
complicate things and for HVO pre-init to work sparse and memory map
should be initialized after hugetlb reservations.
This required pulling out the call to free_area_init() out of setup_arch()
path and moving it MM initialization and this is what the first 23 patches
do.
These changes are deliberately split into per-arch patches that change how
the zone limits are calculated for each architecture and the patches 22
and 23 just remove the calls to free_area_init() and sprase_init() from
arch/*.
Patch 24 is a simple cleanup for MIPS.
Patches 25 and 26 actually consolidate hugetlb reservations and patches 27
and 28 perform some aftermath cleanups.
This patch (of 29):
Move calculations of zone limits to a dedicated arch_zone_limits_init()
function.
Later MM core will use this function as an architecture specific callback
during nodes and zones initialization and thus there won't be a need to
call free_area_init() from every architecture.

Alpha systems can suffer sporadic user-space crashes and heap
corruption when memory compaction is enabled.
Symptoms include SIGSEGV, glibc allocator failures (e.g. "unaligned
tcache chunk"), and compiler internal errors. The failures disappear
when compaction is disabled or when using global TLB invalidation.
The root cause is insufficient TLB shootdown during page migration.
Alpha relies on ASN-based MM context rollover for instruction cache
coherency, but this alone is not sufficient to prevent stale data or
instruction translations from surviving migration.
Fix this by introducing a migration-specific helper that combines:
- MM context invalidation (ASN rollover),
- immediate per-CPU TLB invalidation (TBI),
- synchronous cross-CPU shootdown when required.
The helper is used only by migration/compaction paths to avoid changing
global TLB semantics.
Additionally, update flush_tlb_other(), pte_clear(), to use
READ_ONCE()/WRITE_ONCE() for correct SMP memory ordering.
This fixes observed crashes on both UP and SMP Alpha systems.

Provide a new syscall which has the only purpose to yield the CPU after the
kernel granted a time slice extension.
sched_yield() is not suitable for that because it unconditionally
schedules, but the end of the time slice extension is not required to
schedule when the task was already preempted. This also allows to have a
strict check for termination to catch user space invoking random syscalls
including sched_yield() from a time slice extension region.

Patch series "mm: folio_zero_user: clear page ranges", v11.
This series adds clearing of contiguous page ranges for hugepages.
The series improves on the current discontiguous clearing approach in two
ways:
- clear pages in a contiguous fashion.
- use batched clearing via clear_pages() wherever exposed.
The first is useful because it allows us to make much better use of
hardware prefetchers.
The second, enables advertising the real extent to the processor. Where
specific instructions support it (ex. string instructions on x86; "mops"
on arm64 etc), a processor can optimize based on this because, instead of
seeing a sequence of 8-byte stores, or a sequence of 4KB pages, it sees a
larger unit being operated on.
For instance, AMD Zen uarchs (for extents larger than LLC-size) switch to
a mode where they start eliding cacheline allocation. This is helpful not
just because it results in higher bandwidth, but also because now the
cache is not evicting useful cachelines and replacing them with zeroes.
Demand faulting a 64GB region shows performance improvement:

[*] This improvement is because switching to sequential clearing
allows the hardware prefetchers to do a much better job.
[#] For pg-sz=1GB a large part of the improvement is because of the
cacheline elision mentioned above. preempt=full|lazy improves upon
that because, not needing explicit invocations of cond_resched() to
ensure reasonable preemption latency, it can clear the full extent
as a single unit. In comparison the maximum extent used for
preempt=none|voluntary is PROCESS_PAGES_NON_PREEMPT_BATCH (32MB).
When provided the full extent the processor forgoes allocating
cachelines on this path almost entirely.
(The hope is that eventually, in the fullness of time, the lazy
preemption model will be able to do the same job that none or
voluntary models are used for, allowing us to do away with
cond_resched().)
Raghavendra also tested previous version of the series on AMD Genoa and
sees similar improvement [1] with preempt=lazy.

Let's drop all variants that effectively map to clear_page() and provide
it in a generic variant instead.
We'll use the macro clear_user_page to indicate whether an architecture
provides it's own variant.
Also, clear_user_page() is only called from the generic variant of
clear_user_highpage(), so define it only if the architecture does not
provide a clear_user_highpage(). And, for simplicity define it in
linux/highmem.h.
Note that for parisc, clear_page() and clear_user_page() map to
clear_page_asm(), so we can just get rid of the custom clear_user_page()
implementation. There is a clear_user_page_asm() function on parisc, that
seems to be unused. Not sure what's up with that.

are at it, fix misspelling ufs_args as cdfs_args in osf_ufs_mount() -
layouts are identical, so it doesn't change anything, but the current
variant is confusing for no reason.
