"mm/damon: provide pseudo moving sum probe_hits" (SJ Park) Integrate DAMON's probe_hits attribute counter into the pseudo moving sum infrastructure, enabling real-time, online monitoring without waiting for full aggregation intervals - "mm: Some cleanups for page allocator APIs" (Brendan Jackman) Simplify and refactor the page allocator entry points and flags by unifying allocation paths, adding internal alloc_flags arguments, and eliminating redundant __ prefixed alloc_pages variants. - "Fix incorrect access of hugetlb pte entries" (Dev Jain) Enforce the consistent use of huge_ptep_get() instead of ptep_get() for HugeTLB entries and fixes an unaligned address issue in arm64's huge_ptep_get() implementation - "mm/damon: validate all parameters in the core" (SJ Park) Consolidate parameter validation into the DAMON core specifically within damon_start() and damon_commit_ctx() to centralize error checking, eliminate caller-side redundant checks and to improve maintenance efficiency - "tools/mm/page_owner_sort: fix filtering and cleanup issues" (Yichong Chen) Rename is_need() to filter_record() for clearer return semantics, fix per-record allocation memory leaks and bound output copies in search_pattern() to address an existing buffer issue - "memcg: bail out reclaim when memcg is dying" (Jiayuan Chen) Mitigate a system-wide stall which occurs when a cgroup is removed while one of its memory control files is doing synchronous reclaim - "mm/memory-failure: add panic option for unrecoverable pages" (Breno Leitao) Introduce an opt-in vm.panic_on_unrecoverable_memory_failure sysctl that immediately panics the kernel on unrecoverable memory errors in kernel-owned pages to preserve error context and prevent delayed, silent data corruption - "mm/damon: refactor damon_{start,stop,commit}() for simple error handling" (SJ Park) Refactor the DAMON core API functions to guarantee that all contexts are fully stopped when damon_start(), damon_stop(), or damon_commit() fail, eliminating the need for complex and error-prone caller-side cleanup code - "Keep tail page private zero at free and folio split" (Zi Yan) Add checks to ensure tail_page->private is zero when freeing compound or high-order pages and when promoting tail pages during large folio splits. By validating these fields at free and split time, it allows the removal of redundant private field clearing inside prep_compound_tail() - "mm: drop redundant lru_add_drain in anon folio reuse paths" (Barry Song) Eliminate redundant lru_add_drain() calls in wp_can_reuse_anon_folio() and do_swap_page() to reduce LRU lock contention and system overhead By validating folio refcounts against the LRU cache before draining and removing unnecessary drains in the swap path, it achieves up to a 30.5% reduction in drain calls during heavy swap workloads - "mm: clean up folio LRU and swap declarations" (Jianyue Wu) Reorganize folio LRU and swap code by relocating page-cluster state to mm/swap_state.c, renaming mm/swap.c to mm/folio.c, and moving MM-internal reclaim declarations into mm/internal.h. - "userfaultfd: working set tracking for VM guest memory" (Kiryl Shutsemau) Add userfaultfd support for tracking the working set of VM guest memory, so a VMM can identify hot pages and reclaim cold ones to tiered or remote storage - "mm: remove CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE (Part 2)" (David Hildenbrand) Remove the remaining pieces of CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE, performing some smaller cleanups around freeing of reserved vmemmap pages on the way. - "mm/damon: update probe hits for runtime parameter commits" (SJ Park) Ensure that DAMON's probe_hits attribute counter is properly updated when monitoring intervals are changed at runtime, matching the behavior of nr_accesses. To achieve this, it refactors and renames existing helper functions for shared use, applies the updates to probe_hits, and handles edge cases in damon_probe_hits_mvsum() to maintain measurement accuracy. - "KSM: performance optimizations for rmap_walk_ksm" (xu xin) Resolve a severe KSM reverse-mapping performance bottleneck where thousands of split VMAs sharing a single anon_vma cause extended lock contention. By adding an interval-filtering check during the rmap walk, it reduces worst-case anon_vma lock hold times from over 500ms down to under 2ms, preventing application freezes and latency spikes under memory pressure. - "mm: split a couple of headers from internal.h" (Mike Rapoport) Split declarations related to mm_init, memblock, vmalloc and sparse into new headers - "KSM: use linear_page_index in collect_procs_ksm()" (xu xin) Apply the interval tree optimization from rmap_walk_ksm() to collect_procs_ksm() to avoid iterating over non-matching VMAs during KSM memory error handling. It hoists loop-invariant address initialization and restricts the anon_vma_interval_tree_foreach walk to a targeted page offset range, reducing redundant checks and improving lookup efficiency. - "selftests/mm: avoid false failures in hugetlb and KSM tests" (Sayali Patil) Fix issues in the hugetlb and KSM MM selftest categories that can report failures when the prerequisites for the tests are not satisfied - "mm/damon: introduce data attributes only monitoring" (SJ Park) Introduce attribute-weighted region management in DAMON, allowing users to prioritize specific data attributes (such as page sizes or cgroups) over or instead of access monitoring. By assigning weights to attribute probes, DAMON can completely disable access tracking and adjust monitoring regions based on weighted probe-hit counters to optimize monitoring quality for attribute-focused workloads. - "mm/hmm: Add mmap lock-drop support for userfaultfd-backed mappings" (Stanislav Kinsburskii) Extend hmm_range_fault() to support userfaultfd-backed regions by allowing the mmap lock to be dropped during fault handling via a new hmm_range_fault_locked() helper. By accepting a locked pointer and signaling retry status when lock release occurs, it enables page fault resolution in userfaultfd regions while preserving backward compatibility for existing callers. - "mm: make VMA page offset handling more consistent" (Lorenzo Stoakes) Clean up and standardize how vma->vm_pgoff is accessed and manipulated across file-backed and anonymous mappings in the kernel It introduces dedicated helper functions such as vma_start_pgoff(), vma_end_pgoff(), vma_set_pgoff() and linear_page_delta() while renaming rmap interval tree helpers to better reflect their functionality. These changes establish a cleaner foundation for future work that will unify virtual page offset indexing for all anonymous and CoW'd folios. - "mm: handle device-private PMDs in walk callbacks" (Usama Arif) Address kernel panics and state corruption caused by MM walk callbacks reaching non-present device-private PMD swap entries created during HMM migrations It ensures that functions which acquire pmd_trans_huge_lock() properly recognize device-private PMDs instead of assuming a present THP or a standard migration entry. - "mm/rmap: Refactor try_to_unmap_one" (Dev Jain) Refactor try_to_unmap_one by modularizing Hugetlb, anonymous-lazyfree, and anonymous-swapbacked logic into dedicated functions, laying the structural groundwork for batched anonymous large folio unmapping. - "Docs/ABI/damon: sysfs ABI document fixes and additions" (Song Hu) Fix typos and fills in missing entries in the DAMON sysfs ABI document - "dax/kmem: atomic whole-device hotplug via sysfs" (Gregory Price) Introduce an atomic sysfs state attribute and supporting DAX/MM infrastructure to prevent userland races when offlining and removing entire memory regions By adding an unplugged state alongside standard online modes, it enables whole-device atomic hotplug control while preserving backward compatibility. - "mm: convert more vm_flags_t users to vma_flags_t" (Lorenzo Stoakes) Continue transitioning the kernel from the deprecated vm_flags_t type to vma_flags_t across core memory management infrastructure. It replaces legacy type usage in core functions such as do_mmap(), unmapped area allocation, mm->def_vma_flags, and VMA operations like mlock, mprotect, and mremap. - "Two small patches to clean up mm/mm_slot.h" (xu xin) Refactor mm_slot.h by introducing mm_slot_remove() to unify duplicate slot deletion sequences in khugepaged and KSM. It also adds code documentation explaining why mm_slot_lookup and mm_slot_insert must remain as preprocessor macros rather than static inline functions. - "mm/damon/core: hide core-private struct fields" (SJ Park) Clean up DAMON core structures by consistently marking internal-only fields with private: comment tags to prevent improper direct access from outer layers. It enforces encapsulation across core structures including damon_region, damon_target, and damon_ctx and updates DAMON_SYSFS to interact through approved access APIs instead of exposing raw struct members. - "mm/damon: unurgent fixes for infinite loop, NULL de-ref and races" (SJ Park) Address potential infinite loops, NULL dereferences, and race conditions identified in DAMON It fixes an infinite loop triggered by extreme user configurations, a NULL pointer dereference within unit tests and minor monitoring accuracy degradation caused by subtle runtime races. - "mm/page_alloc: fixes for free_pages_nolock() on RT/UP" (Brendan Jackman) Fix an NMI safety flaw in __free_frozen_pages() where freeing pages on non-SMP or PREEMPT_RT kernels can bypass can_spin_trylock() checks via non-PCP or isolated migration paths. It also resolves potential kernel crashes and privilege escalation risks triggered when BPF tracing runs in NMI context alongside memory hotplug or large allocation frees. - "mm/page_alloc: couple of followups for recent cleanups" (Brendan Jackman) Clean up and update page allocator nomenclature, documentation, and debug assertions. It aligns internal FPI_ flags with the public "nolock" naming convention, removes outdated internal implementation details from high-level page allocator comments, and eliminates obsolete VM_BUG_ON() assertions in allocation paths. - "mm/mseal: further cleanups" (Lorenzo Stoakes) Refactor and simplify the mseal implementation by clarifying API boundaries and removing unnecessary code complexity. It replaces generic do_mseal() usage outside the syscall with a dedicated mseal_mmap_page_zero() helper for MMAP_PAGE_ZERO, eliminates mm_struct parameters to enforce that sealing applies only to current->mm, and streamlines overall logic and comments with no functional changes intended. - "mm/vmscan: fix swappiness=max and clean up per-node proactive reclaim" (Ridong Chen) Resolve reclaim behavior bugs and clean up function parameters across memory reclaim paths It fixes swappiness=max in both standard reclaim and MGLRU so unswappable anonymous memory no longer falls back to evicting page cache, ensures reclaim_store() returns accurate error codes instead of collapsing all failures into -EAGAIN, and removes the obsolete gfp_mask parameter from __node_reclaim(). - "mm: mincore: misc cleanups" (Kefeng Wang) Clean up and simplifies the mincore code. Most importantly, it removes the historical special behavior that always reports VM_PFNMAP pages as non-resident. - "mm/huge_memory: drop dead split helper variants" (Kiryl Shutsemau) Two trivial cleanups in the folio split API - "mm/damon: fix uninitialized DAMOS field and kunit exec expectation bugs" (SJ Park) Resolve minor operational and testing bugs in DAMON identified by Sashiko. It initializes the damos->last_applied field to prevent occasional efficiency degradation and fixes invalid memory accesses in DAMON KUnit tests during test failure handling. - "cleanup for stable_page_flags()" (Jinjiang Tu) Clean up and refactor stable_page_flags() used by /proc/kpageflags without altering functionality. It uses BIT_ULL() to prevent shift-overflow warnings on 64-bit flag bits, converts folio-specific flag checks to standard folio_test_*() helpers, and removes redundant CONFIG_PAGE_IDLE_FLAG handling. - "Batch unmap of uffd-wp file folios" (Dev Jain) Extend batched folio unmapping support to file folios within userfaultfd write-protect (uffd-wp) VMAs by adding batching capabilities to pte_install_uffd_wp_if_needed(). This removes special-case restrictions on uffd-wp VMAs in try_to_unmap_one(), significantly simplifying the function's control flow and complexity. - "mm/early_ioremap: clarify and clean up early_ioremap_reset()" (Sang-Heon Jeon) Clarify and clean up the architecture-specific usage of __late_set_fixmap() and __late_clear_fixmap() after early_ioremap_reset() It adds explicit documentation regarding when early_ioremap_reset() must be called and removes redundant macro definitions and reset calls in the RISC-V and ARM64 architectures. - "mm: fix reclaim storms in defrag_mode" (Johannes Weiner) Address severe performance regressions, swap storms, and spurious OOMs caused by vm.defrag_mode=1 under high memory pressure in Meta production It updates the page allocator slowpath so non-movable allocation requests actively trigger direct reclaim and direct compaction at pageblock_order scale, allowing them to claim whole pageblocks rather than spinning unproductively. - "zram: lockmap tweaks" (Sebastian Siewior) Optimize and fix lockdep tracking for zram devices by consolidating per-entry lockmaps and isolate lock classes across multiple instances This reduces memory overhead by replacing per-entry lockdep_map instances with a single map per struct zram, and assigns a dynamic lock_class_key to each instance to prevent false deadlock reports when different zram devices are backed by distinct filesystems. * tag 'mm-stable-2026-08-18-18-39' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm: (501 commits) selftests/mm: thuge-gen: fix test_shmget() for PAGE_SIZE check selftests/mm: unpoison pages in memory-failure teardown mm/shmem: downgrade final i_blocks check in shmem_evict_inode() to pr_warn() mm/khugepaged: replace mutex_lock/mutex_unlock usage with guard macro mm/zsmalloc: fix release order of locks in zs_page_migrate() Documentation: zram: remove sections numbering ksm: stop iterating VMAs when ksm_test_exit returns true mm: fold userfaultfd_rwp() to false without CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_PTE_PROTNONE mm/migrate: report RCU-tasks quiescent states in migrate_pages_batch() zram: use a custom key for each zram object zram: move lockmap to be per-zram instead per table selftests/mm: fix gup_longterm EINVAL error message mm: page_alloc: fix non-movable reclaim storm in defrag_mode mm: page_alloc: move capture_control to the page allocator mm: compaction: support non-movable compaction for pageblock requests mm: page_alloc: __GFP_FS lockdep annotation for direct compaction hugetlb: evaluate subpool free state while locked mm/damon: remove trailing semicolons after function definitions mm/damon/ops-common: prevent migration fallback to non-target nodes mm/damon: update outdated comment about DAMOS filter handling ...

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/netdev/net-next Pull networking updates from Jakub Kicinski: "One of the 'small improvements all over the place' releases for us. It's hard to draw any direct comparisons because summer vacations disrupted our patch processing (and presumably - generation) quite a bit. Quick and dirty count suggests we (Paolo and I) merged a very similar number of net (632) and net-next (648) patches. This is not telling the full story either because 1/3 to 1/2 of the net-next patches also *seem* like AI-driven low priority fixes, cleanups and clarifications. We are completely overwhelmed, of course. The glimmer of hope is that we secured sufficient LLM budget and access (thank you Meta!) to run reviews with multiple frontier models on each patch. This eliminates some hallucinations. That said, in terms of review, the LLMs can only do so much. The sad truth is that our APIs (especially for rare events like PCIe errors, timeouts etc) have always been racy, and now LLMs don't let us ignore that. I expect our direction for the next release will be to tweak the reviews a little bit more, but start shifting focus to letting the LLMs take care of the busy work - managing patchwork, automating common process complaints, editing commit messages, and maybe applying patches which already got "reviewed-by" tags from people we trust... Core & protocols: - A few steps lowering rtnl_lock dependence: - per-netns netdev unregistration for select SW drivers (e.g. veth, ipvlan, tunnels) - rtnl_lock-less FIB rule changes (RTM_NEWRULE and RTM_DELRULE) - git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull treewide timer related cleanups from Thomas Gleixner: - Remove the leftover CLOCK_TICK_RATE which has been scheduled for removal more than a decade ago along with some now empty asm/timex.h files. - Consolidate delay timer calibration The construct of having a define in a header requires that architectures provided asm/timex.h for no reason. Also the function name for reading the delay timer is confusing at best. Use a config switch to enable that functionality and rename the function to delay_read_timer() to make the purpose clear. This removes some more now empty asm/timex.h files as well. * tag 'timers-cleanups-2026-08-17' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: calibrate: Rework delay timer calibration treewide: Remove CLOCK_TICK_RATE x86: Use PIT_TICK_RATE instead of CLOCK_TICK_RATE

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull generic entry code updates from Thomas Gleixner: - Make syscall user dispatching configurable Not all architectures can makes use of syscall user dispatching. Allow them to disable the feature completely. - Consolidate stack randomization for the generic entry code and the architectures using it. Stack randomization on syscall entry was sprinkled throughout the architecture specific low level entry code and in some cases at the wrong points, e.g. before establishing state, which violates the non-instrumentable constraints of that code. Clean this up by integrating stack randomization into the generic entry code helpers so that it is invoked at the earliest possible point right after establishing state and converting all generic entry code using architecture over. - Clean up the syscall number handling in the generic entry code. It works correctly for architectures which have a separate return value storage in pt_regs, but fails to distinguish the case where user space handed in -1 as syscall number from the case where the entry code rejects it by returning -1 to the callers. Aside of that the return value functionality of those interfaces is not really intuitive. Fix this by separating the decision to reject a syscall (user dispatch, ptrace, seccomp ...) from the potential modification of the syscall number through these mechanisms. This solves most of the problems for architectures which do not have a separate return value storage in pt_regs except for the case where a tracepoint has a BPF script or a probe attached which overwrite both the syscall number and the return value. But that's a problem which cannot be solved in the generic code, that only can be addressed by separating the storage model in the affected architectures. * tag 'core-entry-2026-08-17' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (23 commits) entry, treewide: Make syscall_enter_from_user_mode[_work]() indicate syscall execution entry: Make return type of syscall_trace_enter() bool entry: Rework trace_syscall_enter() entry: Rework syscall_audit_enter() syscall_user_dispatch: Introduce ARCH_SUPPORTS_SYSCALL_USER_DISPATCH entry: Fix seccomp bypass after ptrace with TSYNC x86/entry: Simplify the syscall number logic x86/entry: Get rid of the sys_ni_syscall() indirection x86/entry: Make syscall functions static ptrace, treewide: Rename ptrace_report_syscall_entry() to ptrace_report_syscall_permit_entry() seccomp, treewide: Rename and convert __secure_computing() to return boolean entry: Use syscall number instead of rereading it entry: Remove syscall_enter_from_user_mode() x86/syscall: Use [syscall_]enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() s390/syscall: Use enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() riscv/syscall: Use syscall_enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() powerpc/syscall: Use syscall_enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() loongarch/syscall: Use syscall_enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() entry: Provide [syscall_]enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() randomize_kstack: Provide add_random_kstack_offset_irqsoff() ...
13 daysnet: af_unix: useful handling of LSM denials on SCM_RIGHTSJori Koolstra
Right now if some LSM such as Smack denies an AF_UNIX socket peer to receive an SCM_RIGHTS fd, the SCM_RIGHTS fd array will be cut short at that point, and MSG_CTRUNC is set on return of recvmsg(). This is highly problematic behaviour, because it leaves the receiver wondering what happened. As per man page MSG_CTRUNC is supposed to indicate that the control buffer was sized too short, but suddenly a permission error might result in the exact same flag being set. Moreover, the receiver has no chance to determine how many fds got originally sent and how many were suppressed.[1] Add a SO_RIGHTS_NOTRUNC option to UNIX sockets to enable more useful handling of LSM denials when receiving SCM_RIGHTS messages: instead of truncating the message at the first blocked fd, keep every fd slot and store the LSM errno in the blocked slot. The socket option is inherited by the child accept() socket if set on the listen() socket. 2026-08-04mm/rmap: rename vma_interval_tree_*() to mapping_rmap_tree_*()Lorenzo Stoakes
The family of vma_interval_tree_() functions manipulate the address_space (which, of course, is generally referred to as 'mapping') reverse mapping, but are named the 'VMA' interval tree. VMAs may be mapped by an anon_vma, an address_space, or both. Therefore calling the mapping interval tree a 'VMA' interval tree is rather confusing. This is also inconsistent with the anon_vma_interval_tree_*() functions which explicitly reference the rmap object to which they pertain. Rename the vma_interval_tree_*() functions to mapping_rmap_tree_*() to correct this. We will rename the anon rmap functions similarly in a subsequent patch. No functional change intended. 2026-08-04mm/rmap: parameterise vma_interval_tree_*() by address_spaceLorenzo Stoakes
The file-backed mapping interval tree functions vma_interval_tree_*() accept a raw rb_root_cached pointer to determine the tree in which they are operating. However, in each case, this is always associated with an address_space data type. So simply pass a pointer to that instead to simplify the code, and more clearly differentiate between these operations and those concerning anonymous mappings. While we're here, make the generated interval tree functions static as they do not need to be used externally (any previously existing external users have now been removed). We also rename VMA parameters from 'node' to 'vma' as calling this a node is simply confusing, update the input index types to pgoff_t since they reference page offsets and rename the parameters to pgoff_start and pgoff_last. No functional change intended. 2026-07-12seccomp, treewide: Rename and convert __secure_computing() to return booleanJinjie Ruan
The return value of __secure_computing() currently uses 0 to indicate that a system call should be allowed, and -1 to indicate that it should be blocked/killed. This 0/-1 pattern is non-intuitive for a security check function and makes the control flow at the call sites less readable. Furthermore, any potential future changes to these return values would require a high-risk, error-prone audit of all its users across different architectures. Sanitize this logic by converting the return type of __secure_computing() to a proper boolean, where 'true' explicitly means 'allow' and 'false' means 'fail/deny'. Update all the two dozen or so call sites across the tree to align with this new boolean semantic. No functional changes are intended, as the callers still return -1 to the lower-level assembly entry code upon seccomp denial. 2026-07-07parisc: Remove unnecessary NULL check of the kstat_irqs fieldRadu Rendec
The kstat_irqs field of struct irq_desc is used to store a per-cpu count of interrupt events. It is initialized in init_desc(), along with all the other fields in struct irq_desc that need explicit initialization, and therefore it's always available (non-NULL) for any valid interrupt descriptor. On parisc, CONFIG_SPARSE_IRQ is disabled, interrupt descriptors are allocated statically in the irq_desc[] array, and kstat_irqs is initialized implicitly to NULL. The kstat_irqs field is initialized later, for all descriptors, via start_kernel() -> early_irq_init() -> init_desc(). smp_boot_one_cpu() is used only for CPU hotplugging. On a SMP system, the boot CPU initializes the interrupt descriptors as described above, and smp_boot_one_cpu() is called later, for the secondary CPU(s). A previous change made similar changes across the generic interrupt code in kernel/irq/irqdesc.c, and provides a more detailed explanation of why kstat_irqs is guaranteed to be non-NULL. 2026-07-03parisc: #include <linux/compiler.h> for unlikely() in <asm/ptrace.h>Uwe Kleine-König (The Capable Hub)
Currently <linux/compiler.h> isn't included at all (not even transitively) in <asm/ptrace.h>. arch/parisc/kernel/asm-offsets.c just happens to include the following chain of includes before <asm/ptrace.h>: <linux/sched.h> -> <asm/processor.h> -> <asm/hardware.h> -> <linux/mod_devicetable.h> -> <linux/uuid.h> -> <linux/string.h> -> <linux/compiler.h> . That chain will be broken, because in one of the next commits <asm/hardware.h> is changed to only include <linux/device-id/parisc.h> instead of <linux/mod_devicetable.h>. It's a common operation for Netlink CLI tools (when translating names to ifindexes) and previously required full rtnl_lock. - Support dumping qdiscs and page pools for a specific netdev. Even tho user space wants a dump of all netdevs, most of the time, the OOO programming model results in repeating the dump for each netdev. Which, in absence of a cache, leads to a O(n^2) behavior. - Flush nexthops once on multi-nexthop removal (e.g. when device goes down), another O(n^2) -> O(n) improvement. - Rehash locally generated traffic to a different nexthop on retransmit timeout. - Honor oif when choosing nexthop for locally generated IPv6 traffic. - Convert TCP Auth Option to crypto library, and drop non-RFC algos. - Increase subflow limits in MPTCP to 64 and endpoint limit to 256. - Support MPTCP signaling of IPv6 address + port (ADD_ADDR). We need to selectively skip reporting of the standard TCP Timestamp option, because they won't fit into the header space together (12 + 30 > 40). - Support using bridge neighbor suppression, Duplicate Address Detection, Gratuitous ARP and unsolicited NA forwarding - in EVPN deployments, e.g. VXLAN fabrics (IPv4 and IPv6). - Improve link state reporting for upper netdevs (e.g. macvlan) over tunnel devices (again, mostly for EVPN deployments). - Support binding GENEVE tunnels to a local address. - Speed up UDP tunnel destruction (remove one synchronize_rcu()). - Support exponential field encoding in multicast (IGMPv3 and MLDv2). - Support attaching PSP crypto offload to containers (veth, netkit). - Add a new IPSec Netlink message XFRM_MSG_MIGRATE_STATE that allows migrating individual IPsec SAs independently of their policies. The existing XFRM_MSG_MIGRATE is tightly coupled to policy+SA migration, lacks SPI for unique SA identification, and cannot express reqid changes or migrate Transport mode selectors. The new interface identifies the SA via SPI and mark, supports reqid changes, address family changes, encap removal, and uses an atomic create+install flow under x->lock to prevent SN/IV reuse during AEAD SA migration. - Implement GRO/GSO support for PPPoE. - Convert sockopt callbacks in a number of protocols to iov_iter. Cross-tree stuff: - Remove support for Crypto TFM cloning (unblocked after the TCP Auth Option rework). This feature regressed performance for all crypto API users, since it changed crypto transformation objects into reference-counted objects. - Add FCrypt-PCBC implementation to rxrpc and remove it from the global crypto API as obsolete and insecure. Wireless: - Major rework of station bandwidth handling, fixing issues with lower capability than AP. - Cleanups for EMLSR spec issues (drafts differed). - More Neighbor Awareness Networking (Wi-Fi Aware) work (multicast, schedule improvements, multi-station etc.) - Some Ultra High Reliability (UHR) / IEEE 802.11bn (D1.4) work (e.g. non-primary channel access, UHR DBE support). - Fine Timing Measurement ranging (i.e. distance measurement) APIs. Netfilter: - Use per-rule hash initval in nf_conncount. This avoids unnecessary lock contention with short keys (e.g. conntrack zones) in different namespaces. - Various safety improvements, both in packet parsing and object lifetimes. Notably add refcounts to conntrack timeout policy. Deletions: - Remove TLS + sockmap integration. TLS wants to pin user pages to avoid a copy, and sockmap wants to write to the input stream. More work on this integration is clearly needed, and we can't find any users (original author admitted that they never deployed it). - Remove support for TLS offload with TCP Offload Engine (the far more common opportunistic offload is retained). The locking looks unfixable (driver sleeps under TCP spin locks) and people from the vendor that added this are AWOL. - Remove more ATM code, trying to leave behind only what PPPoATM needs, AAL5 and br2684 with permanent circuits. - Remove AppleTalk. Let it join hamradio in our out of tree protocol graveyard, I mean, repository. - Disable 32-bit x_tables compatibility (32bit binaries on 64bit kernel) interface in user namespaces. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs Pull misc vfs updates from Christian Brauner: "Features: - Reduce pipe->mutex contention by pre-allocating pages outside the lock in anon_pipe_write(). anon_pipe_write() called alloc_page() once per page while holding pipe->mutex. The allocation can sleep doing direct reclaim and runs memcg charging, which extends the critical section and stalls any concurrent reader on the same mutex. Now up to 8 pages are pre-allocated before the mutex is taken, leftovers are recycled into the per-pipe tmp_page[] cache before unlock, and any remainder is released after unlock, keeping the allocator out of the critical section on both sides. On a writers x readers sweep with 64KB writes against a 1 MB pipe throughput improves 6-28% and average write latency drops 5-22%; under memory pressure - when the cost of holding the mutex across reclaim is highest - throughput improves 21-48% and latency drops 17-33%. The microbenchmark is added to selftests. - uaccess/sockptr: fix the ignored_trailing logic in copy_struct_to_user() to behave as documented and the usize check in copy_struct_from_sockptr() for user pointers, and add copy_struct_{from,to}_bounce_buffer() and copy_struct_to_sockptr() helpers for upcoming users (IPPROTO_SMBDIRECT, IPPROTO_QUIC). - bpf: add a sleepable bpf_real_inode() kfunc that resolves the real inode backing a dentry via d_real_inode(). On overlayfs the inode attached to the dentry doesn't carry the underlying device information; this is used by the filesystem restriction BPF program that was merged into systemd. - docs: add guidelines for submitting new filesystems, motivated by the maintenance burden abandoned and untestable filesystems impose on VFS developers, blocking infrastructure work like folio conversions and iomap migration. Fixes: - libfs: set SB_I_NOEXEC and SB_I_NODEV by default in init_pseudo() and drop the now-redundant assignments in callers. This began as a one-line dma-buf fix for a path_noexec() warning; a pseudo filesystem has no reason not to set SB_I_NOEXEC. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs Pull openat2 updates from Christian Brauner: "Features: - Add O_EMPTYPATH to openat(2)/openat2(2). To get an operable file descriptor from an O_PATH file descriptor it is possible to use openat(fd, ".", O_DIRECTORY) for directories, but other file types require going through open("/proc/<pid>/fd/<nr>") and thus depend on a functioning procfs. With O_EMPTYPATH an empty path string is accepted and LOOKUP_EMPTY is set at path resolution time, allowing to reopen the file behind the file descriptor directly. Selftests are included. - Add an OPENAT2_REGULAR flag for openat2(2) which refuses to open anything but regular files with the new EFTYPE error code. This implements the "ability to only open regular files" feature requested by userspace via uapi-group.org and protects services from being redirected to fifos, device nodes, and friends. All atomic_open implementations were audited for OPENAT2_REGULAR handling. Explicit checks were added to ceph, gfs2, nfs (v4), and cifs/smb - these are the filesystems whose atomic_open can encounter an existing non-regular file and would otherwise call finish_open() on it or return a misleading error code. The remaining implementations (9p, fuse, vboxsf, nfs v2/v3) only call finish_open() on freshly created files and use finish_no_open() for lookup hits, letting the VFS catch non-regular files via the do_open() safety net. Cleanups: - Migrate the openat2 selftests to the kselftest harness and move them under selftests/filesystems/. The tests were written in the early days of selftests' TAP support and the modern kselftest harness is much easier to follow and maintain. The contents of the tests are unchanged and the new emptypath tests are ported on top. - Make the LAST_XXX last-type constants private to fs/namei.c. The only user outside of fs/namei.c was ksmbd which only needs to know whether the last component is a regular one, so vfs_path_parent_lookup() now performs the LAST_NORM check internally. 2026-06-09crypto: pcbc - Remove support for PCBC modeEric Biggers
The only user of PCBC mode (Propagating Cipher Block Chaining mode) was net/rxrpc/rxkad.c, which now uses local code instead. While PCBC was an interesting cryptographic experiment, it has largely been relegated to the history books and academic exercises. It is non-parallelizable (i.e., very slow) and doesn't actually achieve the integrity properties it was apparently intended to achieve. Remove support for it from the crypto API. 2026-06-09crypto: fcrypt - Remove support for FCrypt block cipherEric Biggers
Remove the insecure FCrypt block cipher from the crypto API. Its only user was net/rxrpc/, but now net/rxrpc/ implements it locally. The crypto API implementation is no longer needed. For some additional context: FCrypt was designed in 1988 and is essentially a weakened version of DES. It has the same 56-bit key size as DES, which is easily brute forced. Moreover, it's cryptographically weak and doesn't even provide the intended 56-bit security level. Its author considers it to be a mistake, as well (https://lists.openafs.org/pipermail/openafs-devel/2000-December/005320.html). But fortunately this 1980s-era homebrew block cipher was never adopted outside of net/rxrpc/. So its code can just be kept there. 2026-06-06vfs: uapi: retire octal and hex numbers in favor of (1 << n) for O_ flagsJori Koolstra
A recent build failure[1] exposed the diffculty of working with the current octal and hex definitions of O_ flags when trying to find a gap for a new flag. This difficulty is compounded by the fact that O_ flags may have architectural specific values. Replace the hex/octal #defines, which are hard to parse when looking for free bits, with explicit bit shifts like (1 << 11). Also, add comments that identify which architectures redefine some of the seemingly free ("cursed") bits in uapi/asm-generic/fcntl.h. These should not be used to define new O_ flags (for now, at least). The translastion was done with Claude Opus 4.8, and verified with a (non-AI) gawk script. The accounting of which architectures claim which bit-gaps in uapi/asm-generic/fcntl.h is also done by hand. 2026-05-28uaccess: unify inline vs outline copy_{from,to}_user() selectionYury Norov
The kernel allows arches to select between inline and outline implementations of the copy_{from,to}_user() by defining individual INLINE_COPY_FROM_USER and INLINE_COPY_TO_USER, correspondingly. However, all arches enable or disable them always together. Without the real use-case for one helper being inlined while the other outlined, having independent controls is excessive and error prone. 2026-05-21ring-buffer: Flush and stop persistent ring buffer on panicMasami Hiramatsu (Google)
On real hardware, panic and machine reboot may not flush hardware cache to memory. This means the persistent ring buffer, which relies on a coherent state of memory, may not have its events written to the buffer and they may be lost. Moreover, there may be inconsistency with the counters which are used for validation of the integrity of the persistent ring buffer which may cause all data to be discarded. To avoid this issue, stop recording of the ring buffer on panic and flush the cache of the ring buffer's memory. 2026-04-16bpf: Pass bpf_verifier_env to JITXu Kuohai
Pass bpf_verifier_env to bpf_int_jit_compile(). The follow-up patch will use env->insn_aux_data in the JIT stage to detect indirect jump targets. Since bpf_prog_select_runtime() can be called by cbpf and lib/test_bpf.c code without verifier, introduce helper __bpf_prog_select_runtime() to accept the env parameter. Remove the call to bpf_prog_select_runtime() in bpf_prog_load(), and switch to call __bpf_prog_select_runtime() in the verifier, with env variable passed. The original bpf_prog_select_runtime() is preserved for cbpf and lib/test_bpf.c, where env is NULL. Now all constants blinding calls are moved into the verifier, except the cbpf and lib/test_bpf.c cases. The instructions arrays are adjusted by bpf_patch_insn_data() function for normal cases, so there is no need to call adjust_insn_arrays() in bpf_jit_blind_constants(). Remove it. 2026-04-16bpf: Move constants blinding out of arch-specific JITsXu Kuohai
During the JIT stage, constants blinding rewrites instructions but only rewrites the private instruction copy of the JITed subprog, leaving the global env->prog->insnsi and env->insn_aux_data untouched. This causes a mismatch between subprog instructions and the global state, making it difficult to use the global data in the JIT. To avoid this mismatch, and given that all arch-specific JITs already support constants blinding, move it to the generic verifier code, and switch to rewrite the global env->prog->insnsi with the global states adjusted, as other rewrites in the verifier do. This removes the constants blinding calls in each JIT, which are largely duplicated code across architectures. Since constants blinding is only required for JIT, and there are two JIT entry functions, jit_subprogs() for BPF programs with multiple subprogs and bpf_prog_select_runtime() for programs with no subprogs, move the constants blinding invocation into these two functions. In the verifier path, bpf_patch_insn_data() is used to keep global verifier auxiliary data in sync with patched instructions. A key question is whether this global auxiliary data should be restored on the failure path. Besides instructions, bpf_patch_insn_data() adjusts: - prog->aux->poke_tab - env->insn_array_maps - env->subprog_info - env->insn_aux_data For prog->aux->poke_tab, it is only used by JIT or only meaningful after JIT succeeds, so it does not need to be restored on the failure path. For env->insn_array_maps, when JIT fails, programs using insn arrays are rejected by bpf_insn_array_ready() due to missing JIT addresses. Hence, env->insn_array_maps is only meaningful for JIT and does not need to be restored. For subprog_info, if jit_subprogs fails and CONFIG_BPF_JIT_ALWAYS_ON is not enabled, kernel falls back to interpreter. In this case, env->subprog_info is used to determine subprogram stack depth. So it must be restored on failure. For env->insn_aux_data, it is freed by clear_insn_aux_data() at the end of bpf_check(). Before freeing, clear_insn_aux_data() loops over env->insn_aux_data to release jump targets recorded in it. The loop uses env->prog->len as the array length, but this length no longer matches the actual size of the adjusted env->insn_aux_data array after constants blinding. To address it, a simple approach is to keep insn_aux_data as adjusted after failure, since it will be freed shortly, and record its actual size for the loop in clear_insn_aux_data(). But since clear_insn_aux_data() uses the same index to loop over both env->prog->insnsi and env->insn_aux_data, this approach results in incorrect index for the insnsi array. So an alternative approach is adopted: clone the original env->insn_aux_data before blinding and restore it after failure, similar to env->prog. For classic BPF programs, constants blinding works as before since it is still invoked from bpf_prog_select_runtime(). They're all reset by Secondary Bus Reset, but previously drivers of ARI functions that appeared to be on a non-zero device weren't notified and fatal hardware errors could result (Keith Busch) - Make sysfs reset_subordinate hotplug safe to avoid spurious hotplug events (Keith Busch) - Hide Secondary Bus Reset ('bus') from sysfs reset_methods if masked by CXL because it has no effect (Vidya Sagar) - Avoid FLR for AMD NPU device, where it causes the device to hang (Lizhi Hou) Error handling: - Add UPD720201/UPD720202 USB 3.0 xHCI Host Controller .compatible so generic pwrctrl driver can control it (Neil Armstrong) Hotplug: - Set LED_HW_PLUGGABLE for NPEM hotplug-capable ports so LED core doesn't complain when setting brightness fails because the endpoint is gone (Richard Cheng) Peer-to-peer DMA: - Allow wildcards in list of host bridges that support peer-to-peer DMA between hierarchy domains and add all Google SoCs (Jacob Moroni) Endpoint framework: - Advertise dynamic inbound mapping support in pci-epf-test and update host pci_endpoint_test to skip doorbell testing if not advertised by endpoint (Koichiro Den) - Return 0, not remaining timeout, when MHI eDMA ops complete so mhi_ep_ring_add_element() doesn't interpret non-zero as failure (Daniel Hodges) - Remove vntb and ntb duplicate resource teardown that leads to oops when .allow_link() fails or .drop_link() is called (Koichiro Den) - Disable vntb delayed work before clearing BAR mappings and doorbells to avoid oops caused by doing the work after resources have been torn down (Koichiro Den) - Add a way to describe reserved subregions within BARs, e.g., platform-owned fixed register windows, and use it for the RK3588 BAR4 DMA ctrl window (Koichiro Den) - git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull timer core updates from Thomas Gleixner: - A rework of the hrtimer subsystem to reduce the overhead for frequently armed timers, especially the hrtick scheduler timer: - Better timer locality decision - Simplification of the evaluation of the first expiry time by keeping track of the neighbor timers in the RB-tree by providing a RB-tree variant with neighbor links. That avoids walking the RB-tree on removal to find the next expiry time, but even more important allows to quickly evaluate whether a timer which is rearmed changes the position in the RB-tree with the modified expiry time or not. If not, the dequeue/enqueue sequence which both can end up in rebalancing can be completely avoided. - Deferred reprogramming of the underlying clock event device. This optimizes for the situation where a hrtimer callback sets the need resched bit. In that case the code attempts to defer the re-programming of the clock event device up to the point where the scheduler has picked the next task and has the next hrtick timer armed. In case that there is no immediate reschedule or soft interrupts have to be handled before reaching the reschedule point in the interrupt entry code the clock event is reprogrammed in one of those code paths to prevent that the timer becomes stale. - Support for clocksource coupled clockevents The TSC deadline timer is coupled to the TSC. The next event is programmed in TSC time. Currently this is done by converting the CLOCK_MONOTONIC based expiry value into a relative timeout, converting it into TSC ticks, reading the TSC adding the delta ticks and writing the deadline MSR. As the timekeeping core has the conversion factors for the TSC already, the whole back and forth conversion can be completely avoided. The timekeeping core calculates the reverse conversion factors from nanoseconds to TSC ticks and utilizes the base timestamps of TSC and CLOCK_MONOTONIC which are updated once per tick. This allows a direct conversion into the TSC deadline value without reading the time and as a bonus keeps the deadline conversion in sync with the TSC conversion factors, which are updated by adjtimex() on systems with NTP/PTP enabled. - Allow inlining of the clocksource read and clockevent write functions when they are tiny enough, e.g. on x86 RDTSC and WRMSR. With all those enhancements in place a hrtick enabled scheduler provides the same performance as without hrtick. But also other hrtimer users obviously benefit from these optimizations. - Robustness improvements and cleanups of historical sins in the hrtimer and timekeeping code. - Rewrite of the clocksource watchdog. The clocksource watchdog code has over time reached the state of an impenetrable maze of duct tape and staples. The original design, which was made in the context of systems far smaller than today, is based on the assumption that the to be monitored clocksource (TSC) can be trivially compared against a known to be stable clocksource (HPET/ACPI-PM timer). Over the years this rather naive approach turned out to have major flaws. Long delays between the watchdog invocations can cause wrap arounds of the reference clocksource. The access to the reference clocksource degrades on large multi-sockets systems dure to interconnect congestion. This has been addressed with various heuristics which degraded the accuracy of the watchdog to the point that it fails to detect actual TSC problems on older hardware which exposes slow inter CPU drifts due to firmware manipulating the TSC to hide SMI time. The rewrite addresses this by: - Restricting the validation against the reference clocksource to the boot CPU which is usually closest to the legacy block which contains the reference clocksource (HPET/ACPI-PM). - Do a round robin validation betwen the boot CPU and the other CPUs based only on the TSC with an algorithm similar to the TSC synchronization code during CPU hotplug. - Being more leniant versus remote timeouts - The usual tiny fixes, cleanups and enhancements all over the place * tag 'timers-core-2026-04-12' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (75 commits) alarmtimer: Access timerqueue node under lock in suspend hrtimer: Fix incorrect #endif comment for BITS_PER_LONG check posix-timers: Fix stale function name in comment timers: Get this_cpu once while clearing the idle state clocksource: Rewrite watchdog code completely clocksource: Don't use non-continuous clocksources as watchdog x86/tsc: Handle CLOCK_SOURCE_VALID_FOR_HRES correctly MIPS: Don't select CLOCKSOURCE_WATCHDOG parisc: Remove unused clocksource flags hrtimer: Add a helper to retrieve a hrtimer from its timerqueue node hrtimer: Remove trailing comma after HRTIMER_MAX_CLOCK_BASES hrtimer: Mark index and clockid of clock base as const hrtimer: Drop unnecessary pointer indirection in hrtimer_expire_entry event hrtimer: Drop spurious space in 'enum hrtimer_base_type' hrtimer: Don't zero-initialize ret in hrtimer_nanosleep() hrtimer: Remove hrtimer_get_expires_ns() timekeeping: Mark offsets array as const timekeeping/auxclock: Consistently use raw timekeeper for tk_setup_internals() timer_list: Print offset as signed integer tracing: Use explicit array size instead of sentinel elements in symbol printing ...
