2026-06-03ipmi: fix refcount leak in i_ipmi_request()Wentao Liang
When a caller provides a `supplied_recv` message to i_ipmi_request(), the function increments the user's `nr_msgs` reference count. If an error occurs later, the out_err cleanup path only frees the recv_msg if the function allocated it itself (i.e., !supplied_recv). In the supplied_recv case the cleanup is skipped, leaving the reference count elevated. The caller ipmi_request_supply_msgs() does not release the supplied_recv on error, so the reference is permanently leaked. Fix this by explicitly reverting the reference count operations when a supplied recv_msg with a valid user pointer is present in the error path: decrement nr_msgs and drop the user's kref. 2026-05-21ipmi: Fix user refcount underflow in event deliveryMatt Fleming
ipmi_alloc_recv_msg(user) takes the temporary user reference owned by the receive message, and ipmi_free_recv_msg() drops it again. If event delivery fails after allocating receive messages for earlier users, handle_read_event_rsp() rolls those messages back with ipmi_free_recv_msg(). That rollback path still drops user->refcount explicitly after freeing each message. The extra put can free a user that remains linked on intf->users, so later event delivery may dereference a freed user or trip refcount_t's addition-on-zero warning when ipmi_alloc_recv_msg() tries to acquire another reference. Remove the stale explicit put and the now-dead user assignment. Keep the list_del() and ipmi_free_recv_msg() calls; they are the required rollback operations. 2026-05-19ipmi: Use named initializers for struct i2c_device_idUwe Kleine-König (The Capable Hub)
While being less compact, using named initializers allows to more easily see which members of the structs are assigned which value without having to lookup the declaration of the struct. And it's also more robust against changes to the struct definition. This patch doesn't modify the compiled arrays, only their representation in source form benefits. The former was confirmed with x86 and arm64 builds. While touching these arrays, unify usage of whitespace in the list terminator. 2026-05-19ipmi:kcs: Reduce the number of retriesCorey Minyard
The retry count was initially set to 10, which with the 5 second timeouts give 55 seconds to fail a message. The IPMI spec specifies the 5 second timeout, and it specifies retries for KCS but does not specify a number. 55 seconds is a long time, so reduce retries to 2. 2026-04-28ipmi: Add limits to event and receive message requestsCorey Minyard
The driver would just fetch events and receive messages until the BMC said it was done. To avoid issues with BMCs that never say they are done, add a limit of 10 fetches at a time. In addition, an si interface has an attn state it can return from the hardware which is supposed to cause a flag fetch to see if the driver needs to fetch events or message or a few other things. If the attn bit gets stuck, it's a similar problem. So allow messages in between flag fetches so the driver itself doesn't get stuck. This is a more general fix than the previous fix for the specific bad BMC, but should fix the more general issue of a BMC that won't stop saying it has data. This has been there from the beginning of the driver. It's not a bug per-se, but it is accounting for bugs in BMCs. 2026-04-07ipmi: ssif_bmc: Fix KUnit test link failure when KUNIT=mJian Zhang
Building with CONFIG_KUNIT=m and CONFIG_SSIF_IPMI_BMC_KUNIT_TEST=y results in link errors such as: undefined reference to `kunit_binary_assert_format' undefined reference to `__kunit_do_failed_assertion' This happens because the test code is built-in while the KUnit core is built as a module, so the required KUnit symbols are not available at link time. Fix this by requiring KUNIT to be built-in when enabling SSIF_IPMI_BMC_KUNIT_TEST. This patch continues the effort to refactor workqueue APIs, which has begun with the changes introducing new workqueues and a new alloc_workqueue flag: commit 128ea9f6ccfb ("workqueue: Add system_percpu_wq and system_dfl_wq") commit 930c2ea566af ("workqueue: Add new WQ_PERCPU flag") The point of the refactoring is to eventually alter the default behavior of workqueues to become unbound by default so that their workload placement is optimized by the scheduler. Before that to happen after a careful review and conversion of each individual case, workqueue users must be converted to the better named new workqueues with no intended behaviour changes: system_wq -> system_percpu_wq system_unbound_wq -> system_dfl_wq This way the old obsolete workqueues (system_wq, system_unbound_wq) can be removed in the future. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) 2026-02-03ipmi: Fix use-after-free and list corruption on sender errorCorey Minyard
The analysis from Breno: When the SMI sender returns an error, smi_work() delivers an error response but then jumps back to restart without cleaning up properly: 1. intf->curr_msg is not cleared, so no new message is pulled 2. newmsg still points to the message, causing sender() to be called again with the same message 3. If sender() fails again, deliver_err_response() is called with the same recv_msg that was already queued for delivery This causes list_add corruption ("list_add double add") because the recv_msg is added to the user_msgs list twice. Subsequently, the corrupted list leads to use-after-free when the memory is freed and reused, and eventually a NULL pointer dereference when accessing recv_msg->done. The buggy sequence: sender() fails -> deliver_err_response(recv_msg) // recv_msg queued for delivery -> goto restart // curr_msg not cleared! sender() fails again (same message!) -> deliver_err_response(recv_msg) // tries to queue same recv_msg -> LIST CORRUPTION Fix this by freeing the message and setting it to NULL on a send error. Also, always free the newmsg on a send error, otherwise it will leak. They might block flushing more reliable serial consoles which are more suitable for serious debugging anyway. - Allow to use the last 4 bytes of the printk ring buffer. - Prevent queuing IRQ work and block printk kthreads when consoles are suspended. Otherwise, they create non-necessary churn or even block the suspend. - Release console_lock() between each record in the kthread used for legacy consoles on RT. It might significantly speed up the boot. - Release nbcon context between each record in the atomic flush. 2025-10-14ipmi: Fix the race between __scan_channels() and deliver_response()Jinhui Guo
The race window between __scan_channels() and deliver_response() causes the parameters of some channels to be set to 0. 1.[CPUA] __scan_channels() issues an IPMI request and waits with wait_event() until all channels have been scanned. wait_event() internally calls might_sleep(), which might yield the CPU. (Moreover, an interrupt can preempt wait_event() and force the task to yield the CPU.) 2.[CPUB] deliver_response() is invoked when the CPU receives the IPMI response. After processing a IPMI response, deliver_response() directly assigns intf->wchannels to intf->channel_list and sets intf->channels_ready to true. However, not all channels are actually ready for use. 3.[CPUA] Since intf->channels_ready is already true, wait_event() never enters __wait_event(). __scan_channels() immediately clears intf->null_user_handler and exits. 4.[CPUB] Once intf->null_user_handler is set to NULL, deliver_response() ignores further IPMI responses, leaving the remaining channels zero-initialized and unusable. 2025-10-07ipmi: Fix handling of messages with provided receive message pointerGuenter Roeck
Prior to commit b52da4054ee0 ("ipmi: Rework user message limit handling"), i_ipmi_request() used to increase the user reference counter if the receive message is provided by the caller of IPMI API functions. This is no longer the case. However, ipmi_free_recv_msg() is still called and decreases the reference counter. This results in the reference counter reaching zero, the user data pointer is released, and all kinds of interesting crashes are seen. Fix the problem by increasing user reference counter if the receive message has been provided by the caller. 2025-09-16ipmi: Add Loongson-2K BMC supportBinbin Zhou
This patch adds Loongson-2K BMC IPMI support. According to the existing design, we use software simulation to implement the KCS interface registers: Stauts/Command/Data_Out/Data_In. Also since both host side and BMC side read and write kcs status, fifo flag is used to ensure data consistency. 2025-09-08ipmi:si: Gracefully handle if the BMC is non-functionalCorey Minyard
If the BMC is not functional, the driver goes into an error state and starts a 1 second timer. When the timer times out, it will attempt a simple message. If the BMC interacts correctly, the driver will start accepting messages again. If not, it remains in error state. If the driver goes into error state, all messages current and pending will return with an error. Getting ready for handling when a BMC is non-responsive or broken, allow the sender operation to fail in an SMI. If it was a user-generated message it will return the error. The powernv code was already doing this internally, but the way it was written could result in deep stack descent if there were a lot of messages queued. Have its send return an error in this case.
