2026-05-04drm: Rename struct drm_atomic_state to drm_atomic_commitMaxime Ripard
The KMS framework uses two slightly different definitions for the state concept. For a given object (plane, CRTC, encoder, etc., so drm_$OBJECT_state), the state is the entire state of that object. However, at the device level, drm_atomic_state refers to a state update for a limited number of objects. Thus, drm_atomic_state isn't the entire device state, but only the full state of some objects in that device. This has been an endless source of confusion and thus bugs. We can rename the drm_atomic_state structure to drm_atomic_commit to make it less confusing. The IPUv3 overlay plane may be placed over or under the primary plane. Set the zpos of the primary to an immutable position of 1 to have the possibility to place the other plane underneath it. Set the zpos of other planes (the overlay plane) to a mutable value between 0 (the lowest possible value of a zpos) and directly above the primary plane with the latter being the default. "interface-pix-fmt" DT property Prefer bus format set via legacy "interface-pix-fmt" DT property over panel bus format. This is necessary to retain support for DTs which configure the IPUv3 parallel output as 24bit DPI, but connect 18bit DPI panels to it with hardware swizzling. This used to work up to Linux 6.12, but stopped working in 6.13, reinstate the behavior to support old DTs. This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) 2026-01-16drm: Discard pm_runtime_put() return valueRafael J. Wysocki
Multiple DRM drivers use the pm_runtime_put() return value for printing debug or even error messages and all of those messages are at least somewhat misleading. Returning an error code from pm_runtime_put() merely means that it has not queued up a work item to check whether or not the device can be suspended and there are many perfectly valid situations in which that can happen, like after writing "on" to the devices' runtime PM "control" attribute in sysfs for one example. It also happens when the kernel has been configured with CONFIG_PM unset. For this reason, modify all of those drivers to simply discard the pm_runtime_put() return value which is what they should be doing. 2025-10-30drm/imx: parallel-display: convert to devm_drm_bridge_alloc() APILuca Ceresoli
This is the new API for allocating DRM bridges. This conversion was missed during the initial conversion of all bridges to the new API. Thus all kernels with commit 94d50c1a2ca3 ("drm/bridge: get/put the bridge reference in drm_bridge_attach/detach()") and using this driver now warn due to drm_bridge_attach() incrementing the refcount, which is not initialized without using devm_drm_bridge_alloc() for allocation. To make the conversion simple and straightforward without messing up with the drmm_simple_encoder_alloc(), move the struct drm_bridge from struct imx_parallel_display_encoder to struct imx_parallel_display. Also remove the 'struct imx_parallel_display *pd' from struct imx_parallel_display_encoder, not needed anymore. Call drm_mode_size_dumb() to compute dumb-buffer scanline pitch and buffer size. Align the pitch to a multiple of 8. Push the current calculation into the only direct caller imx. Imx's hardware requires the framebuffer width to be aligned to 8. The driver's current approach is actually incorrect, as it only guarantees this implicitly and requires bpp to be a multiple of 8 already. A later commit will fix this problem by aligning the scanline pitch such that an aligned width still fits into each scanline's memory. A number of other drivers are build on top of gem-dma helpers and implement their own dumb-buffer allocation. i.MX8qxp Display Controller(DC) is comprised of three main components that include a blit engine for 2D graphics accelerations, display controller for display output processing, as well as a command sequencer. Add kernel mode setting support for the display controller part with two CRTCs and two primary planes(backed by FetchLayer and FetchWarp respectively). The registers of the display controller are accessed without command sequencer involved, instead just by using CPU. The command sequencer is supposed to be used by the blit engine. 2025-03-20drm/bridge: Add encoder parameter to drm_bridge_funcs.attachMaxime Ripard
The drm_bridge structure contains an encoder pointer that is widely used by bridge drivers. This pattern is largely documented as deprecated in other KMS entities for atomic drivers. However, one of the main use of that pointer is done in attach to just call drm_bridge_attach on the next bridge to add it to the bridge list. While this dereferences the bridge->encoder pointer, it's effectively the same encoder the bridge was being attached to. We can make it more explicit by adding the encoder the bridge is attached to to the list of attach parameters. This also removes the need to dereference bridge->encoder in most drivers.
