2026-05-04drm: Rename struct drm_atomic_state to drm_atomic_commitMaxime Ripard
The KMS framework uses two slightly different definitions for the state concept. For a given object (plane, CRTC, encoder, etc., so drm_$OBJECT_state), the state is the entire state of that object. However, at the device level, drm_atomic_state refers to a state update for a limited number of objects. Thus, drm_atomic_state isn't the entire device state, but only the full state of some objects in that device. This has been an endless source of confusion and thus bugs. We can rename the drm_atomic_state structure to drm_atomic_commit to make it less confusing. Convert this driver to DRM_BRIDGE_ATTACH_NO_CONNECTOR and to the drm_bridge_connector framework which is the current DRM bridge best practice. Based on the in-tree dts[i] files this introduces no regression. Based on the kernel doc of drm_bridge_connector.c: * To make use of this helper, all bridges in the chain shall report bridge * operation flags (&drm_bridge->ops) and bridge output type * (&drm_bridge->type), as well as the DRM_BRIDGE_ATTACH_NO_CONNECTOR attach * flag (none of the bridges shall create a DRM connector directly). and each of the 3 LCDIF blocks in the i.MX8MP, all of them comply with the above requirement: * For the LCDIF3, the pipeline is: LCDIF3 -> fsl,imx8mp-hdmi-pvi -> fsl,imx8mp-hdmi-tx -> HDMI connector And the involved bridges are: * fsl,imx8mp-hdmi-pvi has ops = 0 (it doesn't set it) because it implements none the optional features mentioned by those flags, and it honors the DRM_BRIDGE_ATTACH_NO_CONNECTOR by propagating it * fsl,imx8mp-hdmi-tx is implemented based on dw-hdmi, which sets ops as appropriate and also propagates the DRM_BRIDGE_ATTACH_NO_CONNECTOR flag * display-connector (enabled via the DT overlay if needed) sets ops and makes DRM_BRIDGE_ATTACH_NO_CONNECTOR mandatory * The LCDIF2 involves the panel-bridge, display-connector and lvds-decoder (even though only the pane-bridge is currently supported), and all these three also set ops as needed and propagate DRM_BRIDGE_ATTACH_NO_CONNECTOR or make it mandatory. * The LCDIF1 is used with the adv7511, tc358767 and the panel bridge drivers which also comply with the requirements. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) Decouple drm_get_format_info() from struct drm_mode_fb_cmd2 and just pass the pixel format+modifier combo in by hand. We may want to use drm_get_format_info() outside of the normal addfb paths where we won't have a struct drm_mode_fb_cmd2, and creating a temporary one just for this seems silly. 2024-12-01Get rid of 'remove_new' relic from platform driver structLinus Torvalds
The continual trickle of small conversion patches is grating on me, and is really not helping. Just get rid of the 'remove_new' member function, which is just an alias for the plain 'remove', and had a comment to that effect: /* * .remove_new() is a relic from a prototype conversion of .remove(). * New drivers are supposed to implement .remove(). Once all drivers are * converted to not use .remove_new any more, it will be dropped. */ This was just a tree-wide 'sed' script that replaced '.remove_new' with '.remove', with some care taken to turn a subsequent tab into two tabs to make things line up. I did do some minimal manual whitespace adjustment for places that used spaces to line things up. Then I just removed the old (sic) .remove_new member function, and this is the end result. 2024-03-20drm/lcdif: Do not disable clocks on already suspended hardwareMarek Vasut
In case the LCDIF is enabled in DT but unused, the clocks used by the LCDIF are not enabled. Those clocks may even have a use count of 0 in case there are no other users of those clocks. This can happen e.g. in case the LCDIF drives HDMI bridge which has no panel plugged into the HDMI connector. Do not attempt to disable clocks in the suspend callback and re-enable clocks in the resume callback unless the LCDIF is enabled and was in use before the system entered suspend, otherwise the driver might end up trying to disable clocks which are already disabled with use count 0, and would trigger a warning from clock core about this condition. Note that the lcdif_rpm_suspend() and lcdif_rpm_resume() functions internally perform the clocks disable and enable operations and act as runtime PM hooks too. The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus. As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they "temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to explicitly include the correct includes. The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is (mostly) ignored and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Trivially convert the mxsfb driver from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. In case the LCDIFv3 is used to drive a 4k panel via i.MX8MP HDMI bridge, the LCDIFv3 becomes susceptible to FIFO underflows, these lead to nasty flicker of the image on the panel, or image being shifted by half frame horizontally every second frame. The flicker can be easily triggered by running 3D application on top of weston compositor, like neverball or chromium. Surprisingly glmark2-es2-wayland or glmark2-es2-drm does not trigger this effect so easily. Configure the FIFO Panic threshold register and enable the FIFO Panic mode, which internally boosts the NoC interconnect priority for LCDIFv3 transactions in case of possible underflow. This mitigates the flicker effect on 4k panels as well. 2022-10-15drm: lcdif: Switch to limited range for RGB to YUV conversionLaurent Pinchart
Up to and including v1.3, HDMI supported limited quantization range only for YCbCr. HDMI v1.4 introduced selectable quantization ranges, but this feature isn't supported in the dw-hdmi driver that is used in conjunction with the LCDIF in the i.MX8MP. The HDMI YCbCr output is thus always advertised in the AVI infoframe as limited range. The LCDIF driver, on the other hand, configures the CSC to produce full range YCbCr. This mismatch results in loss of details and incorrect colours. Fix it by switching to limited range YCbCr. The coefficients are copied from drivers/media/platforms/nxp/imx-pxp.c for coherency, as the hardware is most likely identical.
