2026-07-07net/liquidio: drop cached VF pci_dev LUTYuho Choi
The PF SR-IOV enable path caches VF pci_dev pointers in dpiring_to_vfpcidev_lut[] by iterating with pci_get_device(). Those entries do not own a reference, because the iterator drops the previous device reference on each step. The cached pointer is then dereferenced later when handling OCTEON_VF_FLR_REQUEST. Replace the cached VF mapping with runtime lookup on the mailbox DPI ring: derive the VF index from q_no, resolve the VF via exported PCI IOV helpers, validate it with the PF pointer and VF ID, then issue pcie_flr() and drop the reference with pci_dev_put(). Remove the unused VF lookup table initialization and cleanup. 2026-05-26net: thunderx: fix PTP device ref leak in nicvf_probe()Haoxiang Li
cavium_ptp_get() acquires a reference to the PTP PCI device through pci_get_device(). If any initialization step fails after cavium_ptp_get(), the PTP PCI device reference is leaked. Add a common error path to release the PTP reference before returning from probe failures. 2026-05-12net: Consistently define pci_device_ids using named initializersUwe Kleine-König (The Capable Hub)
... and PCI device helpers. The various struct pci_device_id arrays were initialized mostly by one the PCI_DEVICE macros and then list expressions. The latter isn't easily readable if you're not into PCI. Using named initializers is more explicit and thus easier to parse. Also use PCI_DEVICE* helper macros to assign .vendor, .device, .subvendor and .subdevice where appropriate and skip explicit assignments of 0 (which the compiler takes care of). The secret plan is to make struct pci_device_id::driver_data an anonymous union (similar to https://lore.kernel.org/all/cover.1776579304.git.u.kleine-koenig@baylibre.com/) and that requires named initializers. But it's also a nice cleanup on its own. This change doesn't introduce changes to the compiled pci_device_id arrays. Tested on x86 and arm64. 2026-02-21Convert more 'alloc_obj' cases to default GFP_KERNEL argumentsLinus Torvalds
This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next line. Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial. So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed' scripts. The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want whitespace cleanup anyway. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar typesKees Cook
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>

2026-01-29net: liquidio: Initialize netdev pointer before queue setupZilin Guan
In setup_nic_devices(), the netdev is allocated using alloc_etherdev_mq(). However, the pointer to this structure is stored in oct->props[i].netdev only after the calls to netif_set_real_num_rx_queues() and netif_set_real_num_tx_queues(). If either of these functions fails, setup_nic_devices() returns an error without freeing the allocated netdev. Since oct->props[i].netdev is still NULL at this point, the cleanup function liquidio_destroy_nic_device() will fail to find and free the netdev, resulting in a memory leak. Fix this by initializing oct->props[i].netdev before calling the queue setup functions. This ensures that the netdev is properly accessible for cleanup in case of errors. Compile tested only. 2025-11-27net: thunder: convert to use .get_rx_ring_countBreno Leitao
Convert the Cavium Thunder NIC VF driver to use the new .get_rx_ring_count ethtool operation instead of implementing .get_rxnfc solely for handling ETHTOOL_GRXRINGS command. This simplifies the code by removing the switch statement and replacing it with a direct return of the queue count. 2025-09-22net: WQ_PERCPU added to alloc_workqueue usersMarco Crivellari
Currently if a user enqueue a work item using schedule_delayed_work() the used wq is "system_wq" (per-cpu wq) while queue_delayed_work() use WORK_CPU_UNBOUND (used when a cpu is not specified). The same applies to schedule_work() that is using system_wq and queue_work(), that makes use again of WORK_CPU_UNBOUND. This lack of consistentcy cannot be addressed without refactoring the API. alloc_workqueue() treats all queues as per-CPU by default, while unbound workqueues must opt-in via WQ_UNBOUND. This default is suboptimal: most workloads benefit from unbound queues, allowing the scheduler to place worker threads where they’re needed and reducing noise when CPUs are isolated. This change adds a new WQ_PERCPU flag at the network subsystem, to explicitly request the use of the per-CPU behavior. Both flags coexist for one release cycle to allow callers to transition their calls. Once migration is complete, WQ_UNBOUND can be removed and unbound will become the implicit default. With the introduction of the WQ_PERCPU flag (equivalent to !WQ_UNBOUND), any alloc_workqueue() caller that doesn’t explicitly specify WQ_UNBOUND must now use WQ_PERCPU. All existing users have been updated accordingly. 2025-07-09net: thunderx: avoid direct MTU assignment after WRITE_ONCE()Alok Tiwari
The current logic in nicvf_change_mtu() writes the new MTU to netdev->mtu using WRITE_ONCE() before verifying if the hardware update succeeds. However on hardware update failure, it attempts to revert to the original MTU using a direct assignment (netdev->mtu = orig_mtu) which violates the intended of WRITE_ONCE protection introduced in commit 1eb2cded45b3 ("net: annotate writes on dev->mtu from ndo_change_mtu()") Additionally, WRITE_ONCE(netdev->mtu, new_mtu) is unnecessarily performed even when the device is not running. Fix this by: Only writing netdev->mtu after successfully updating the hardware. Skipping hardware update when the device is down, and setting MTU directly. Remove unused variable orig_mtu. This ensures that all writes to netdev->mtu are consistent with WRITE_ONCE expectations and avoids unintended state corruption on failure paths. 2025-07-01time/timecounter: Fix the lie that struct cyclecounter is constGreg Kroah-Hartman
In both the read callback for struct cyclecounter, and in struct timecounter, struct cyclecounter is declared as a const pointer. Unfortunatly, a number of users of this pointer treat it as a non-const pointer as it is burried in a larger structure that is heavily modified by the callback function when accessed. This lie had been hidden by the fact that container_of() "casts away" a const attribute of a pointer without any compiler warning happening at all. Fix this all up by removing the const attribute in the needed places so that everyone can see that the structure really isn't const, but can, and is, modified by the users of it. 2025-05-09net: thunder: make tx software timestamp independentJason Xing
skb_tx_timestamp() is used for tx software timestamp enabled by SOF_TIMESTAMPING_TX_SOFTWARE while SKBTX_HW_TSTAMP is used for SOF_TIMESTAMPING_TX_HARDWARE. As it clearly shows they are different timestamps in two dimensions, it's not appropriate to group these two together in the if-statement. This patch completes three things: 1. make the software one standalone. Users are able to set both timestamps together with SOF_TIMESTAMPING_OPT_TX_SWHW flag. 2. make the software one generated after the hardware timestamp logic to avoid generating sw and hw timestamps at one time without SOF_TIMESTAMPING_OPT_TX_SWHW being set. 3. move the software timestamp call as close to the door bell. 2025-04-28net: thunder_bgx: Use pure PCI devres APIPhilipp Stanner
The currently used function pci_request_regions() is one of the problematic "hybrid devres" PCI functions, which are sometimes managed through devres, and sometimes not (depending on whether pci_enable_device() or pcim_enable_device() has been called before). The PCI subsystem wants to remove this behavior and, therefore, needs to port all users to functions that don't have this problem. Furthermore, the PCI function being managed implies that it's not necessary to call pci_release_regions() manually. Remove the calls to pci_release_regions(). 2024-08-15net: thunder_bgx: Fix netdev structure allocationMarc Zyngier
Commit 94833addfaba ("net: thunderx: Unembed netdev structure") had a go at dynamically allocating the netdev structures for the thunderx_bgx driver. This change results in my ThunderX box catching fire (to be fair, it is what it does best). The issues with this change are that: - bgx_lmac_enable() is called *after* bgx_acpi_register_phy() and bgx_init_of_phy(), both expecting netdev to be a valid pointer. - bgx_init_of_phy() populates the MAC addresses for *all* LMACs attached to a given BGX instance, and thus needs netdev for each of them to have been allocated. There is a few things to be said about how the driver mixes LMAC and BGX states which leads to this sorry state, but that's beside the point. To address this, go back to a situation where all netdev structures are allocated before the driver starts relying on them, and move the freeing of these structures to driver removal. Someone brave enough can always go and restructure the driver if they want. 2024-07-15net: Add struct kernel_ethtool_ts_infoKory Maincent
In prevision to add new UAPI for hwtstamp we will be limited to the struct ethtool_ts_info that is currently passed in fixed binary format through the ETHTOOL_GET_TS_INFO ethtool ioctl. It would be good if new kernel code already started operating on an extensible kernel variant of that structure, similar in concept to struct kernel_hwtstamp_config vs struct hwtstamp_config. Since struct ethtool_ts_info is in include/uapi/linux/ethtool.h, here we introduce the kernel-only structure in include/linux/ethtool.h. The manual copy is then made in the function called by ETHTOOL_GET_TS_INFO. 2024-06-27net: thunderx: Unembed netdev structureBreno Leitao
Embedding net_device into structures prohibits the usage of flexible arrays in the net_device structure. For more details, see the discussion at [1]. Un-embed the net_devices from struct lmac by converting them into pointers, and allocating them dynamically. Use the leverage alloc_netdev() to allocate the net_device object at bgx_lmac_enable(). The free of the device occurs at bgx_lmac_disable(). Do not free_netdevice() if bgx_lmac_enable() fails after lmac->netdev is allocated, since bgx_lmac_disable() is called if bgx_lmac_enable() fails, and lmac->netdev will be freed there (similarly to lmac->dmacs). 2024-06-07liquidio: Adjust a NULL pointer handling path in lio_vf_rep_copy_packetAleksandr Mishin
In lio_vf_rep_copy_packet() pg_info->page is compared to a NULL value, but then it is unconditionally passed to skb_add_rx_frag() which looks strange and could lead to null pointer dereference. lio_vf_rep_copy_packet() call trace looks like: octeon_droq_process_packets octeon_droq_fast_process_packets octeon_droq_dispatch_pkt octeon_create_recv_info ...search in the dispatch_list... ->disp_fn(rdisp->rinfo, ...) lio_vf_rep_pkt_recv(struct octeon_recv_info *recv_info, ...) In this path there is no code which sets pg_info->page to NULL. So this check looks unneeded and doesn't solve potential problem. But I guess the author had reason to add a check and I have no such card and can't do real test. In addition, the code in the function liquidio_push_packet() in liquidio/lio_core.c does exactly the same. Based on this, I consider the most acceptable compromise solution to adjust this issue by moving skb_add_rx_frag() into conditional scope. 2024-05-07net: annotate writes on dev->mtu from ndo_change_mtu()Eric Dumazet
Simon reported that ndo_change_mtu() methods were never updated to use WRITE_ONCE(dev->mtu, new_mtu) as hinted in commit 501a90c94510 ("inet: protect against too small mtu values.")
