Pull vfs writeback updates from Christian Brauner:
"This makes sync_inode_metadata() and writeback_single_inode() persist
not only the inode but all metadata associated with it.
A new .sync_inode_metadata superblock operation is called from
__writeback_single_inode(). Alongside it a new I_METADATA_WRITEBACK
state flag is added.
Filesystems no longer need their own mmb_fsync() implementations and
can just use simple_fsync(). All metadata is now written for IS_SYNC
and IS_DIRSYNC inodes. Races where several fsyncs raced and mmb_sync()
could return before all buffers were really persisted are fixed since
I_SYNC now serializes properly.
The I_METADATA_WRITEBACK scheme also fixes the case where a
WB_SYNC_NONE writeback landing between write(2) and fsync(2) left
fsync(2) failing to persist the inode. That problem is not specific to
filesystems using the generic metadata bh tracking, and the ones that
do not are left alone.
ext2, udf, bfs, minix, fat and ext4 in nojournal mode have their data
integrity writeout fixed and are converted. affs drops metadata bh
tracking and mmb_fsync() is removed.
A few other fixes came out of this:
- a UAF in mark_buffer_write_io_error()
- missed inode writeback when racing with __writeback_single_inode()
- ext4 allocating the mapping_metadata_bhs struct on demand
- three fat fixes: a lost inode update in do_msdos_rename() with
DIRSYNC, inode buffer write errors not propagating out of
fat_sync_inode_metadata() and directory entries not being
persisted on fsync(2) of the root directory"

mnt_want_write() and parent locking are moved into lookup_open()
itself.
audit_inode_child() is also now called in lookup_open() on failure.

lookup_open() made no such call when atomic_open() should have created

fat_scan_logstart() leaves the matching directory entry's buffer head in
sinfo.bh for the caller to release, just like fat_scan().
fat_rebuild_parent() uses the directory entry to rebuild the parent inode
for the nostale_ro NFS export path, but does not release sinfo.bh after a
successful scan. Release it once fat_build_inode() has consumed the
directory entry data.

fat_read_static_bpb() only accepts a short jump as a valid bootstrap code
signature for DOS 1.x volumes when the dos1xfloppy mount option is used.
However, according to the Microsoft fatgen103.doc, the BS_jmpBoot field
has two allowed forms: 0xEB 0x?? 0x90 (short jump + NOP) and 0xE9 0x??
0x?? (near jump). The specification explicitly states that either form
is acceptable.
This patch relaxes the check to also accept 0xE9 as the first byte of the
jump instruction.

fat_ent_write() may have committed the new link to the primary FAT but
then failed on the mirror copy, leaving the chain pointing to new_dclus
even though the caller will free it. Restore the original value to keep
the chain consistent.

The only time that 'false' is passed as the 'excl' arg to the ->create
inode_operation is in lookup_open() when ->atomic_open is not provided
by the parent directory.
*all* directory inode_operations which do not have ->atomic_open
completely ignore the 'excl' arg.
Therefore we don't need the 'excl' arg. Those few ->create operations
which pay attention to the arg are only ever called with a value of
'true'.
We remove that arg and change all ->create operations to behave as those
thhe arg were 'true'.

Buffers containing the directory entries of a directory's children are
tracked in the directory inode's metadata bh list. Before commit
525da4f40a7c ("fat: Fix missed inode writeback during fsync(2)")
fsync(2) of a directory wrote that list out unconditionally via
mmb_fsync_noflush(). Now the list is written by
fat_sync_inode_metadata() which __writeback_single_inode() only
invokes when the inode has I_METADATA_WRITEBACK set. The root inode
never gets I_METADATA_WRITEBACK - __fat_write_inode() returns early
for it since the root directory has no directory entry of its own -
and fat_sync_inode_metadata() returns early for it as well. Hence
fsync(2) on the root directory returns success without writing out the
directory entries of its children.
Set I_METADATA_WRITEBACK for the root inode in __fat_write_inode() and
make fat_sync_inode_metadata() only skip the nonexistent directory
entry for the root inode but still sync the metadata bh list.

fat_sync_inode_metadata() ignores the result of writing the buffer
containing the inode's directory entry. Before commit 525da4f40a7c
("fat: Fix missed inode writeback during fsync(2)") a write error was
propagated to fsync(2) via __fat_write_inode() -> sync_dirty_buffer(),
now fsync(2) reports success even though the inode's directory entry
could not be written. Check buffer_write_io_error() after
sync_dirty_buffer() like the other ->sync_inode_metadata
implementations do.

Commit e668e0668181 ("fat: Replace fat_sync_inode() with
sync_inode_metadata()") hoisted mark_inode_dirty() in front of the
IS_DIRSYNC conditional in all converted callers except for the main
rename path of do_msdos_rename(). There old_inode is generally still
clean when the target directory has DIRSYNC set and, unlike
fat_sync_inode(), sync_inode_metadata() does nothing for a clean inode.
Thus the directory entry at the new location is never updated with the
contents of old_inode: it stays the way msdos_add_entry() created it,
with start cluster 0 and size 0 (or, when the rename replaced an
existing target, it keeps describing the deleted target). Since
old_inode is also never marked dirty, later writeback doesn't update
the entry either and the stale directory entry ends up on disk even on
a clean unmount, so the renamed file loses its contents.
Mark old_inode dirty before calling sync_inode_metadata() like all the
other call sites do.

Use generic sync_inode_metadata() instead of fat_sync_inode() for
persisting inode metadata changes for DIRSYNC inodes. This slightly
simplifies code and also addresses a theoretical race where
fat_sync_inode() could return before all metadata buffers associated
with the inode were properly written out when racing with fsync(2).

FAT could fail to properly write out inode on fsync(2) due to races with
WB_SYNC_NONE writeback. Several racing fsyncs could also result in some
fsync returning earlier than all metadata buffers were properly
persisted.
Fix these issues by using new .sync_inode_metadata method which makes
sure all inode related metadata is written to disk during any
WB_SYNC_ALL writeback. The slight disadvantage of this approach is that
when fsync(2) of an inode races with rename(2) of the inode, the window
during which inode isn't properly persisted becomes wider.

The FAT specification[1] (FAT Directory Structure -> "DIR_Name[0]") states:
If DIR_Name[0] == 0x00, then the directory entry is free (same as for
0xE5), and there are no allocated directory entries after this one
(all of the DIR_Name[0] bytes in all of the entries after this one
are also set to 0).
The special 0 value, rather than the 0xE5 value, indicates to FAT
file system driver code that the rest of the entries in this
directory do not need to be examined because they are all free.
Linux did not honour this. fat_get_entry() kept advancing past the 0x00
terminator; if the trailing on-disk slots were not zero-filled (buggy
formatters, read-only media written by other operating systems, on-disk
corruption) the driver surfaced arbitrary bytes as real directory
entries. On a typical affected image, `ls /mnt` returns ~150 bogus
entries with random binary names, multi-gigabyte sizes, dates ranging
from 1980 to 2106, and a flood of -EIO from stat().
Earlier attempts (v1..v3, see [2][3][4]) added `de->name[0] == 0` guards
at each call site. As Hirofumi pointed out on v3, those guards reject
the entry but fat_get_entry() has already advanced *pos past it; the
next readdir() resumes after the marker and walks straight back into
the garbage. His suggestion was to centralise the check.
This patch:
* Adds fat_get_entry_eod(), a small wrapper around fat_get_entry()
that returns -1 when name[0] == 0 and seeks *pos to dir->i_size.
Per spec every slot after the 0x00 marker is also zero, so jumping
to the end of the directory is correct: subsequent reads return -1
from fat_bmap() without re-fetching trailing zero slots, and
callers persisting *pos across invocations (notably readdir's
ctx->pos) keep reporting end-of-directory on re-entry.
* Converts the read/search paths to use the new wrapper:
fat_parse_long(), fat_search_long(), __fat_readdir(),
and fat_get_short_entry() -- the last covers
fat_get_dotdot_entry(), fat_dir_empty(), fat_subdirs(),
fat_scan(), and fat_scan_logstart() transitively.
* Leaves fat_add_entries() and __fat_remove_entries() on raw
fat_get_entry(): the write paths legitimately need to operate on
free/zero slots. fat_add_entries() additionally detects an
allocated entry past a 0x00 marker (the spec violation that
produces the garbage) and treats it as filesystem corruption:
fat_fs_error_ratelimit() is called -- which honours the configured
errors= mount option (panic / remount-ro / continue) -- and the
operation returns -EIO so we don't write fresh entries into an
already-corrupt directory.

msdos_format_name() performs no upper-bound check on the input name length.
It silently truncates an arbitrarily long name into the 8.3 form (11 bytes)
and returns success. The subsequent fat_scan() then matches only against
these 11 truncated bytes, so it returns an inode as long as any entry with
the same 8.3 name exists on disk.
For example, passing a 300-byte name of all 'A's returns 0 with res set to
"AAAAAAAA" (8 'A's + 3 padding spaces), reporting success for a name far
longer than NAME_MAX.
As a result, when a user calls open() on a path component longer than
NAME_MAX (255) bytes, the VFS only enforces PATH_MAX, not the length of an
individual component. The dentry keeps the original long name but gets an
inode attached and becomes positive. Later in vfs_open() -> fsnotify_open()
-> fanotify_info_copy_name() triggers WARN_ON_ONCE(), and the event is
reported to userspace with an empty name.
vfat is not affected, as create goes through xlate_to_uni() which refuses
names longer than FAT_LFN_LEN.
Fix this by checking 'len > NAME_MAX' at the entry of msdos_format_name(),
the single entry point for all msdos name handling, aligning with the
NAME_MAX check that xfs/9p/ceph/simple_lookup() perform at lookup.

fat_fill_super() subtracts sbi->data_start from the BPB total sector count
before computing the number of clusters. A malformed image can declare a
total sector count smaller than data_start, causing the subtraction to
underflow and the mount code to derive a plausible cluster count from the
FAT length instead.
Reject such images before the subtraction. In QEMU, a crafted FAT image
with total_sectors=2 and data_start=3 mounted successfully before the fix
and reading a file returned bytes stored past the BPB-declared end of the
volume. With this change, the same image is rejected during mount.

Report FAT's case sensitivity behavior via the FS_XFLAG_CASEFOLD
and FS_XFLAG_CASENONPRESERVING flags. FAT filesystems are
case-insensitive by default.
MSDOS supports a 'nocase' mount option that enables case-sensitive
behavior; check this option when reporting case sensitivity.
VFAT long filename entries preserve case; without VFAT, only
uppercased 8.3 short names are stored. MSDOS with 'nocase' also
preserves case since the name-formatting code skips upcasing when
'nocase' is set. Check both options when reporting case preservation.

There are only very few filesystems using generic metadata buffer head
tracking and everybody is paying the overhead. When we remove this
tracking for inode reclaim code .evict will start to see inodes with
metadata buffers attached so write them out and prune them.

FAT uses a list of metadata bhs attached to an inode. Switch it to use
generic_buffers_fsync_noflush() instead of __generic_file_fsync() as
we'll be removing metadata bh handling from __generic_file_fsync().

The kernel test robot reported that on hexagon with clang, several test
functions in fat_test.c exceed the 1280-byte stack frame limit.
The root cause is the compound literal assignment in
fat_test_set_time_offset():
*sbi = (struct msdos_sb_info){};
struct msdos_sb_info contains two hash tables of 256 hlist_head entries
(FAT_HASH_SIZE), making it several kilobytes. The compound literal
creates a temporary on the stack, and when clang inlines
fat_test_set_time_offset() into each test function, the large temporary
inflates every caller's stack frame beyond the limit.
Replace the compound literal with memset() which zeroes the struct
in-place without a stack temporary.

Extend fat_test with coverage for FAT timestamp edge cases that are not
currently exercised.
Add tests for fat_time_unix2fat() clamping at the UTC boundaries and
when time_offset pushes an otherwise valid timestamp outside the FAT
date range. Also cover the NULL time_cs path used by existing callers,
and verify fat_truncate_atime() truncation across timezone offsets.

This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:
Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)
Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)
Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)
(where TYPE may also be *VAR)
The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

namespace refcount to reduce false-sharing
- Track file lock presence via a flag in ->i_opflags instead of
reading ->i_flctx, avoiding false-sharing with ->i_readcount on
open/close hot paths. Measured 4-16% improvement on 24-core
open-in-a-loop benchmarks
- Use a consume fence in locks_inode_context() to match the
store-release/load-consume idiom, eliminating a hardware fence on
some architectures

__follow_mount_rcu() that never fires since the caller already

- Make dump_inode() use get_kernel_nofault() to safely access inode

"This contains updates for lease support to require filesystems to
explicitly opt-in to lease support
Currently kernel_setlease() falls through to generic_setlease() when a
a filesystem does not define ->setlease(), silently granting lease
support to every filesystem regardless of whether it is prepared for
it.
This is a poor default: most filesystems never intended to support
leases, and the silent fallthrough makes it impossible to distinguish
"supports leases" from "never thought about it".
This inverts the default. It adds explicit
.setlease = generic_setlease;
assignments to every in-tree filesystem that should retain lease
support, then changes kernel_setlease() to return -EINVAL when
->setlease is NULL.
With the new default in place, simple_nosetlease() is redundant and
is removed along with all references to it"

Corrupted FAT images can leave a directory inode with an incorrect
i_nlink (e.g. 2 even though subdirectories exist). rmdir then
unconditionally calls drop_nlink(dir) and can drive i_nlink to 0,
triggering the WARN_ON in drop_nlink().
Add a sanity check in vfat_rmdir() and msdos_rmdir(): only drop the
parent link count when it is at least 3, otherwise report a filesystem
error.

Remove <linux/hex.h> from <linux/kernel.h> and update all users/callers of
hex.h interfaces to directly #include <linux/hex.h> as part of the process
of putting kernel.h on a diet.
Removing hex.h from kernel.h means that 36K C source files don't have to
pay the price of parsing hex.h for the roughly 120 C source files that
need it.
This change has been build-tested with allmodconfig on most ARCHes. Also,
all users/callers of <linux/hex.h> in the entire source tree have been
updated if needed (if not already #included).

Pass the type of update (atime vs c/mtime plus version) as an enum
instead of a set of flags that caused all kinds of confusion.
Because inode_update_timestamps now can't return a modified version
of those flags, return the I_DIRTY_* flags needed to persist the
update, which is what the main caller in generic_update_time wants
anyway, and which is suitable for the other callers that only want
to know if an update happened.
The whole update_time path keeps the flags argument, which will be used
to support non-blocking updates soon even if it is unused, and (the
slightly renamed) inode_update_time also gains the possibility to return
a negative errno to support this.

Fat only has a single on-disk timestamp covering ctime and mtime. Add
fat-specific flags that indicate which timestamp fat_truncate_time should
update to make this more clear. This allows removing no-op
fat_truncate_time calls with the S_CTIME flag and prepares for removing
the S_* flags.

Add the setlease file_operation to fat_file_operations and
fat_dir_operations, pointing to generic_setlease. A future patch will
change the default behavior to reject lease attempts with -EINVAL when
there is no setlease file operation defined. Add generic_setlease to
retain the ability to set leases on this filesystem.

min_t(unsigned int, a, b) casts an 'unsigned long' to 'unsigned int'.
Use min(a, b) instead as it promotes any 'unsigned int' to 'unsigned long'
and so cannot discard significant bits.
A couple of places need umin() because of loops like:
nfolios = DIV_ROUND_UP(ret + start, PAGE_SIZE);
for (i = 0; i < nfolios; i++) {
struct folio *folio = page_folio(pages[i]);
...
unsigned int len = umin(ret, PAGE_SIZE - start);
...
ret -= len;
...
}
where the compiler doesn't track things well enough to know that
'ret' is never negative.
The alternate loop:
for (i = 0; ret > 0; i++) {
struct folio *folio = page_folio(pages[i]);
...
unsigned int len = min(ret, PAGE_SIZE - start);
...
ret -= len;
...
}
would be equivalent and doesn't need 'nfolios'.
Most of the 'unsigned long' actually come from PAGE_SIZE.
Detected by an extra check added to min_t().

fat_max_cache() always returned FAT_MAX_CACHE and did not use the inode

Pull fs header updates from Christian Brauner:
"This contains initial work to start splitting up fs.h.
Begin the long-overdue work of splitting up the monolithic fs.h
header. The header has grown to over 3000 lines and includes types and
functions for many different subsystems, making it difficult to
navigate and causing excessive compilation dependencies.
This series introduces new focused headers for superblock-related
code:
- Rename fs_types.h to fs_dirent.h to better reflect its actual
content (directory entry types)
- Add fs/super_types.h containing superblock type definitions
- Add fs/super.h containing superblock function declarations
This is the first step in a longer effort to modularize the VFS
headers.
Cleanups:
- Inode Field Layout Optimization (Mateusz Guzik)
Move inode fields used during fast path lookup closer together to
improve cache locality during path resolution.
- current_umask() Optimization (Mateusz Guzik)
Inline current_umask() and move it to fs_struct.h. This improves
performance by avoiding function call overhead for this
frequently-used function, and places it in a more appropriate
header since it operates on fs_struct"

The panic occurs as follows:
1. logical_block_size is 8KiB, causing {struct super_block *sb}->s_blocksize
is initialized to 0.

2. __bread_gfp is called with size == 0, causing folio_alloc_buffers() to

Pull mmap_prepare updates from Christian Brauner:
"Last cycle we introduce f_op->mmap_prepare() in c84bf6dd2b83 ("mm:
introduce new .mmap_prepare() file callback").
This is preferred to the existing f_op->mmap() hook as it does require
a VMA to be established yet, thus allowing the mmap logic to invoke
this hook far, far earlier, prior to inserting a VMA into the virtual
address space, or performing any other heavy handed operations.
This allows for much simpler unwinding on error, and for there to be a
single attempt at merging a VMA rather than having to possibly
reattempt a merge based on potentially altered VMA state.
Far more importantly, it prevents inappropriate manipulation of
incompletely initialised VMA state, which is something that has been
the cause of bugs and complexity in the past.
The intent is to gradually deprecate f_op->mmap, and in that vein this
series coverts the majority of file systems to using f_op->mmap_prepare.
Prerequisite steps are taken - firstly ensuring all checks for mmap
capabilities use the file_has_valid_mmap_hooks() helper rather than
directly checking for f_op->mmap (which is now not a valid check) and
secondly updating daxdev_mapping_supported() to not require a VMA
parameter to allow ext4 and xfs to be converted.
Commit bb666b7c2707 ("mm: add mmap_prepare() compatibility layer for
nested file systems") handles the nasty edge-case of nested file
systems like overlayfs, which introduces a compatibility shim to allow
f_op->mmap_prepare() to be invoked from an f_op->mmap() callback.
This allows for nested filesystems to continue to function correctly
with all file systems regardless of which callback is used. Once we
finally convert all file systems, this shim can be removed.
As a result, ecryptfs, fuse, and overlayfs remain unaltered so they
can nest all other file systems.
We additionally do not update resctl - as this requires an update to
remap_pfn_range() (or an alternative to it) which we defer to a later
series, equally we do not update cramfs which needs a mixed mapping
insertion with the same issue, nor do we update procfs, hugetlbfs,
syfs or kernfs all of which require VMAs for internal state and hooks.

This refactors the address_space_operations write_begin() and
write_end() callbacks to take const struct kiocb * as their first
argument, allowing IOCB flags such as IOCB_DONTCACHE to propagate
to the filesystem's buffered I/O path.
Ext4 is updated to implement handling of the IOCB_DONTCACHE flag
and advertises support via the FOP_DONTCACHE file operation flag.
Additionally, the i915 driver's shmem write paths are updated to
bypass the legacy write_begin/write_end interface in favor of
directly calling write_iter() with a constructed synchronous kiocb.
Another i915 change replaces a manual write loop with
kernel_write() during GEM shmem object creation.

Change the address_space_operations callbacks write_begin() and
write_end() to take struct kiocb * as the first argument instead of
struct file *.
Update all affected function prototypes, implementations, call sites,
and related documentation across VFS, filesystems, and block layer.
Part of a series refactoring address_space_operations write_begin and
write_end callbacks to use struct kiocb for passing write context and
flags.
