2026-06-09lockd: Rename struct nlm_lock to lockd_lockChuck Lever
A subsequent patch will convert fs/lockd/svcproc.c to use machine-generated XDR encoding and decoding functions in a manner similar to fs/lockd/svc4proc.c. Machine-generated types derived from the NLM specification will conflict with the internal types of the same name. Rename the internal struct nlm_lock type to lockd_lock to avoid such naming conflicts. Reviewed-by: Jeff Layton <jlayton@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Chuck Lever <chuck.lever@oracle.com>
2026-06-09lockd: Rename struct nlm_cookie to lockd_cookieChuck Lever
Machine-generated XDR types derived from the NLM specification use names that match the protocol. Internal lockd types with identical names cause compilation failures when machine-generated encoders replace hand-coded ones. Rename the internal struct nlm_cookie type to lockd_cookie to prevent such collisions. The "lockd_" prefix distinguishes implementation-specific types from specified NLM protocol types. The F_GETLK fcntl can work with either read access or write access or both. It can query F_RDLCK and F_WRLCK locks in either case. However lockd currently treats F_GETLK similar to F_SETLK in that read access is required to query an F_RDLCK lock and write access is required to query a F_WRLCK lock. This is wrong and can cause problems - e.g. when qemu accesses a read-only (e.g. iso) filesystem image over NFS (though why it queries if it can get a write lock - I don't know. But it does, and this works with local filesystems). So we need TEST requests to be handled differently. To do this: - change nlm_do_fopen() to accept O_RDWR as a mode and in that case succeed if either a O_RDONLY or O_WRONLY file can be opened. - change nlm_lookup_file() to accept a mode argument from caller, instead of deducing base on lock time, and pass that on to nlm_do_fopen() - change nlm4svc_retrieve_args() and nlmsvc_retrieve_args() to detect TEST requests and pass O_RDWR as a mode to nlm_lookup_file, passing the same mode as before for other requests. Also set lock->fl.c.flc_file to whichever file is available for TEST requests. - change nlmsvc_testlock() to also not calculate the mode, but to use whatever was stored in lock->fl.c.flc_file. This behaviour of lockd - requesting O_WRONLY access to TEST for exclusive locks - has been present at least since git history began. However it was hidden until recently because knfsd ignored the access requested by lockd and required only READ access for all locking requests (unless the underlying filesystem provided an f_op->open function which checked access permissions). The commit mentioned in Fixes: below changed nfsd_permission() to NOT override the access request for LOCK requests and this exposed the bug that we are now fixing. Note that there is another issue that this patch does not address. The flock(.., LOCK_EX) call is permitted on a read-only file descriptor. Linux NFS maps this to NLM locking as whole-file byte-range locks. nfsd will see this as though it were fcntl( F_SETLK (F_WRLCK)) and will now require write access, which it might not be able to get. It is not clear if this is a problem in practice, or what the best solution might be. So no attempt is made to address it. 2026-03-29lockd: Make linux/lockd/nlm.h an internal headerChuck Lever
The NLM protocol constants and status codes in nlm.h are needed only by lockd's internal implementation. NFS client code and NFSD interact with lockd through the stable API in bind.h and have no direct use for protocol-level definitions. Exposing these definitions globally via bind.h creates unnecessary coupling between lockd internals and its consumers. Moving nlm.h from include/linux/lockd/ to fs/lockd/ clarifies the API boundary: bind.h provides the lockd service interface, while nlm.h remains available only to code within fs/lockd/ that implements the protocol. 2026-03-29lockd: Relocate include/linux/lockd/lockd.hChuck Lever
Headers placed in include/linux/ form part of the kernel's internal API and signal to subsystem maintainers that other parts of the kernel may depend on them. By moving lockd.h into fs/lockd/, lockd becomes a more self-contained module whose internal interfaces are clearly distinguished from its public contract with the rest of the kernel. This relocation addresses a long-standing XXX comment in the header itself that acknowledged the file's misplacement. Future changes to lockd internals can now proceed with confidence that external consumers are not inadvertently coupled to implementation details. 2026-03-29lockd: Introduce nlm__int__deadlockChuck Lever
The use of CONFIG_LOCKD_V4 in combination with a later cast_status() in the NLMv3 code is difficult to reason about. Instead, replace the use of nlm_deadlock with an implementation-defined status value that version-specific code translates appropriately. The new approach establishes a translation boundary: generic lockd code returns nlm__int__deadlock when posix_lock_file() yields -EDEADLK. Version-specific handlers (svc4proc.c for NLMv4, svcproc.c for NLMv3) translate this internal status to the appropriate wire protocol value. NLMv4 maps to nlm4_deadlock; NLMv3 maps to nlm_lck_denied (since NLMv3 lacks a deadlock-specific status code). Later this modification will also remove the need to include NLMv4 headers in NLMv3 and generic code. Reviewed-by: Jeff Layton <jlayton@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Chuck Lever <chuck.lever@oracle.com>
2026-03-29lockd: Relocate and rename nlm_drop_replyChuck Lever
The nlm_drop_reply status code is internal to the kernel's lockd implementation and must never appear on the wire. Its previous location in xdr.h grouped it with legitimate NLM protocol status codes, obscuring this critical distinction. Relocate the definition to lockd.h with a comment block for internal status codes, and rename to nlm__int__drop_reply to make its internal-only nature explicit. This prepares for adding additional internal status codes in subsequent patches. Signed-off-by: Chuck Lever <chuck.lever@oracle.com>
2026-03-06treewide: change inode->i_ino from unsigned long to u64Jeff Layton
On 32-bit architectures, unsigned long is only 32 bits wide, which causes 64-bit inode numbers to be silently truncated. Several filesystems (NFS, XFS, BTRFS, etc.) can generate inode numbers that exceed 32 bits, and this truncation can lead to inode number collisions and other subtle bugs on 32-bit systems. Change the type of inode->i_ino from unsigned long to u64 to ensure that inode numbers are always represented as 64-bit values regardless of architecture. Update all format specifiers treewide from %lu/%lx to %llu/%llx to match the new type, along with corresponding local variable types. This is the bulk treewide conversion. Earlier patches in this series handled trace events separately to allow trace field reordering for better struct packing on 32-bit. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. 2026-01-26locks: ensure vfs_test_lock() never returns FILE_LOCK_DEFERREDNeilBrown

2025-12-24lockd: fix vfs_test_lock() callsNeilBrown
Usage of vfs_test_lock() is somewhat confused. Documentation suggests it is given a "lock" but this is not the case. It is given a struct file_lock which contains some details of the sort of lock it should be looking for. In particular passing a "file_lock" containing fl_lmops or fl_ops is meaningless and possibly confusing. This is particularly problematic in lockd. nlmsvc_testlock() receives an initialised "file_lock" from xdr-decode, including manager ops and an owner. It then mistakenly passes this to vfs_test_lock() which might replace the owner and the ops. This can lead to confusion when freeing the lock. The primary role of the 'struct file_lock' passed to vfs_test_lock() is to report a conflicting lock that was found, so it makes more sense for nlmsvc_testlock() to pass "conflock", which it uses for returning the conflicting lock. With this change, freeing of the lock is not confused and code in __nlm4svc_proc_test() and __nlmsvc_proc_test() can be simplified. Documentation for vfs_test_lock() is improved to reflect its real purpose, and a WARN_ON_ONCE() is added to avoid a similar problem in the future. 2023-10-16lockd: fix race in async lock request handlingAlexander Aring
This patch fixes a race in async lock request handling between adding the relevant struct nlm_block to nlm_blocked list after the request was sent by vfs_lock_file() and nlmsvc_grant_deferred() does a lookup of the nlm_block in the nlm_blocked list. It could be that the async request is completed before the nlm_block was added to the list. This would end in a -ENOENT and a kernel log message of "lockd: grant for unknown block". To solve this issue we add the nlm_block before the vfs_lock_file() call to be sure it has been added when a possible nlmsvc_grant_deferred() is called. 2022-01-08nfs: block notification on fs with its own ->lockJ. Bruce Fields
NFSv4.1 supports an optional lock notification feature which notifies the client when a lock comes available. (Normally NFSv4 clients just poll for locks if necessary.) To make that work, we need to request a blocking lock from the filesystem. We turned that off for NFS in commit f657f8eef3ff ("nfs: don't atempt blocking locks on nfs reexports") [sic] because it actually blocks the nfsd thread while waiting for the lock. Thanks to Vasily Averin for pointing out that NFS isn't the only filesystem with that problem. Any filesystem that leaves ->lock NULL will use posix_lock_file(), which does the right thing. Simplest is just to assume that any filesystem that defines its own ->lock is not safe to request a blocking lock from. So, this patch mostly reverts commit f657f8eef3ff ("nfs: don't atempt blocking locks on nfs reexports") [sic] and commit b840be2f00c0 ("lockd: don't attempt blocking locks on nfs reexports"), and instead uses a check of ->lock (Vasily's suggestion) to decide whether to support blocking lock notifications on a given filesystem. Also add a little documentation. Perhaps someday we could add back an export flag later to allow filesystems with "good" ->lock methods to support blocking lock notifications. 2021-08-26lockd: don't attempt blocking locks on nfs reexportsJ. Bruce Fields
As in the v4 case, it doesn't work well to block waiting for a lock on an nfs filesystem. As in the v4 case, that means we're depending on the client to poll. It's probably incorrect to depend on that, but I *think* clients do poll in practice. In any case, it's an improvement over hanging the lockd thread indefinitely as we currently are. 2021-08-21lockd: lockd server-side shouldn't set fl_opsJ. Bruce Fields
Locks have two sets of op arrays, fl_lmops for the lock manager (lockd or nfsd), fl_ops for the filesystem. The server-side lockd code has been setting its own fl_ops, which leads to confusion (and crashes) in the reexport case, where the filesystem expects to be the only one setting fl_ops. And there's no reason for it that I can see-the lm_get/put_owner ops do the same job. Reported-by: Daire Byrne <daire@dneg.com> Tested-by: Daire Byrne <daire@dneg.com> Signed-off-by: J. 2018-08-09nfsd: fix leaked file lock with nfs exported overlayfsAmir Goldstein
nfsd and lockd call vfs_lock_file() to lock/unlock the inode returned by locks_inode(file). Many places in nfsd/lockd code use the inode returned by file_inode(file) for lock manipulation. With Overlayfs, file_inode() (the underlying inode) is not the same object as locks_inode() (the overlay inode). This can result in "Leaked POSIX lock" messages and eventually to a kernel crash as reported by Eddie Horng: https://marc.info/?l=linux-unionfs&m=153086643202072&w=2 Fix all the call sites in nfsd/lockd that should use locks_inode(). 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. 2014-09-09lockd: rip out deferred lock handling from testlock codepathJeff Layton
As Kinglong points out, the nlm_block->b_fl field is no longer used at all. Also, vfs_test_lock in the generic locking code will only return FILE_LOCK_DEFERRED if FL_SLEEP is set, and it isn't here. The only other place that returns that value is the DLM lock code, but it only does that in dlm_posix_lock, never in dlm_posix_get. Remove all of the deferred locking code from the testlock codepath since it doesn't appear to ever be used anyway. I do have a small concern that this might cause a behavior change in the case where you have a block already sitting on the list when the testlock request comes in, but that looks like it doesn't really work properly anyway. I think it's best to just pass that down to vfs_test_lock and let the filesystem report that instead of trying to infer what's going on with the lock by looking at an existing block. 2014-09-09locks: Copy fl_lmops information for conflock in locks_copy_conflock()Kinglong Mee
Commit d5b9026a67 ([PATCH] knfsd: locks: flag NFSv4-owned locks) using fl_lmops field in file_lock for checking nfsd4 lockowner. But, commit 1a747ee0cc (locks: don't call ->copy_lock methods on return of conflicting locks) causes the fl_lmops of conflock always be NULL. Also, commit 0996905f93 (lockd: posix_test_lock() should not call locks_copy_lock()) caused the fl_lmops of conflock always be NULL too. Make sure copy the private information by fl_copy_lock() in struct file_lock_operations, merge __locks_copy_lock() to fl_copy_lock(). Jeff advice, "Set fl_lmops on conflocks, but don't set fl_ops. fl_ops are superfluous, since they are callbacks into the filesystem. There should be no need to bother the filesystem at all with info in a conflock. But, lock _ownership_ matters for conflocks and that's indicated by the fl_lmops. So you really do want to copy the fl_lmops for conflocks I think." v5: add missing calling of locks_release_private() in nlmsvc_testlock() v4: only copy fl_lmops for conflock, don't copy fl_ops Signed-off-by: Kinglong Mee <kinglongmee@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Jeff Layton <jlayton@primarydata.com>
