2026-08-11devlink: add generic device max_sfs parameterNikolay Aleksandrov
Add a new generic devlink device parameter (max_sfs) to control if and how many light-weight NIC subfunctions can be created. Subfunctions are a light-weight network functions backed by an underlying PCI function. Their lifecycle can already be managed by devlink, but currently users cannot enable them in the device. They can be enabled/disabled only via external vendor tools. This parameter allows subfunctions to be enabled (>0) or disabled (0) via devlink. A subsequent patch will add support for max_sfs to the mlx5 driver. 2026-07-08devlink: print controller prefix for non-zero controllerMoshe Shemesh
The controller prefix (c<N>) in phys_port_name is currently restricted to external host controllers. This layout sufficed when DPUs only had a single local controller and one or more external host controllers. However, newer devices can have multiple controllers within the DPU itself, even within a single host environment. To support these topologies, allow drivers to report the controller number regardless of the "external" flag status. Any non-zero controller number will now be explicitly reported, even for single-host or local DPU controllers. Existing ports with controller=0 are unaffected. Update documentation and kdoc to clarify that a non-zero controller number does not require the external flag to be set. 2026-07-07devlink: Allow rate node parents from other devlinksCosmin Ratiu
This commit makes use of the building blocks previously added to implement cross-device rate nodes. A new 'supported_cross_device_rate_nodes' bool is added to devlink_ops which lets drivers advertise support for cross-device rate objects. If enabled and if there is a common shared devlink instance, then: - all rate objects will be stored in the top-most common nested instance and - rate objects can have parents from other devices sharing the same common instance. Storing rates in the common shared ancestor is safe, because it is reference counted by its nested devlink instances, so it's guaranteed to outlive them. Furthermore, the shared devlink infra guarantees a given nested devlink hierarchy is managed by the same driver. The parent devlink from info->ctx is not locked, so none of its mutable fields can be used. But parent setting only requires comparing devlink pointer comparisons. Additionally, since the shared devlink is locked, other rate operations cannot concurrently happen. 2026-07-07devlink: Allow parent dev for rate-set and rate-newCosmin Ratiu
Currently, a devlink rate's parent device is assumed to be the same as the one where the devlink rate is created. This patch changes that to allow rate commands to accept an additional argument that specifies the parent dev. This will allow devlink rate groups with leafs from other devices. Example of the new usage with ynl: Creating a group on pci/0000:08:00.1 with a parent to an already existing pci/0000:08:00.1/group1: ./tools/net/ynl/pyynl/cli.py --spec \ Documentation/netlink/specs/devlink.yaml --do rate-new --json '{ "bus-name": "pci", "dev-name": "0000:08:00.1", "rate-node-name": "group2", "rate-parent-node-name": "group1", "parent-dev": { "bus-name": "pci", "dev-name": "0000:08:00.1" } }' Setting the parent of leaf node pci/0000:08:00.1/65537 to pci/0000:08:00.0/group1: ./tools/net/ynl/pyynl/cli.py --spec \ Documentation/netlink/specs/devlink.yaml --do rate-set --json '{ "bus-name": "pci", "dev-name": "0000:08:00.1", "port-index": 65537, "parent-dev": { "bus-name": "pci", "dev-name": "0000:08:00.0" }, "rate-parent-node-name": "group1" }' Signed-off-by: Cosmin Ratiu <cratiu@nvidia.com> Reviewed-by: Carolina Jubran <cjubran@nvidia.com> Reviewed-by: Jiri Pirko <jiri@nvidia.com> Signed-off-by: Tariq Toukan <tariqt@nvidia.com> Link: https://patch.msgid.link/20260701073254.754518-7-tariqt@nvidia.com Signed-off-by: Paolo Abeni <pabeni@redhat.com>
2026-07-07devlink: Add parent dev to devlink APICosmin Ratiu
Upcoming changes to the rate commands need the parent devlink specified. This change adds a nested 'parent-dev' attribute to the API and helpers to obtain and put a reference to the parent devlink instance in info->ctx. To avoid deadlocks, the parent devlink is unlocked before obtaining the main devlink instance that is the target of the request. A reference to the parent is kept until the end of the request to avoid it suddenly disappearing. This means that this reference is of limited use without additional protection. 2026-07-07devlink: Decouple rate storage from associated devlink objectCosmin Ratiu
Devlink rate leafs and nodes were stored in their respective devlink objects pointed to by devlink_rate->devlink. This patch removes that association by introducing the concept of 'rate node devlink', which is where all rates that could link to each other are stored. For now this is the same as devlink_rate->devlink. After this patch, the devlink rates stored in this devlink instance could potentially be from multiple other devlink instances. So all rate node manipulation code was updated to: - correctly compare the actual devlink object during iteration. - maybe acquire additional locks (noop for now). 2026-06-18devlink: Fix parent ref leak on tc-bw failureCosmin Ratiu
When a node is created via rate-new with tc-bw and a parent node, devlink_nl_rate_set() executes the sequence of ops. It bails out on the first failure and doesn't rollback anything. For most things that is fine (setting some numbers), but the parent set can leak if there's another failure after that. That is precisely what happens when parent setting isn't the last block in the function. After the referenced "Fixes" commit, when tc-bw fails to be set the function bails out after having set the parent and incremented its refcount. There are two callers: - devlink_nl_rate_set_doit() is fine, it just reports the error. - but devlink_nl_rate_new_doit() frees the newly created node and leaks the parent refcnt. Fix that by reordering the blocks so parent setting is last and adding a comment explaining this so future modification preserve the ordering (hopefully). 2026-06-13devlink: Implement devlink param multi attribute nested data valuesSaeed Mahameed
Devlink param value attribute is not defined since devlink is handling the value validating and parsing internally, this allows us to implement multi attribute values without breaking any policies. Devlink param multi-attribute values are considered to be dynamically sized arrays of u64 values, by introducing a new devlink param type DEVLINK_PARAM_TYPE_U64_ARRAY, driver and user space can set a variable count of u64 values into the DEVLINK_ATTR_PARAM_VALUE_DATA attribute. Implement get/set parsing and add to the internal value structure passed to drivers. This is useful for devices that need to configure a list of values for a specific configuration. example: $ devlink dev param show pci/... name multi-value-param name multi-value-param type driver-specific values: cmode permanent value: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7 $ devlink dev param set pci/... name multi-value-param \ value 4,5,6,7,0,1,2,3 cmode permanent Signed-off-by: Saeed Mahameed <saeedm@nvidia.com> Signed-off-by: Ratheesh Kannoth <rkannoth@marvell.com> Link: https://patch.msgid.link/20260609040453.711932-5-rkannoth@marvell.com Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org>

2026-06-01devlink: Release nested relation on devlink freeMark Bloch
devlink relation state is normally released from devl_unregister(), which calls devlink_rel_put(). This misses devlink instances that get a nested relation before registration and then fail probe before devl_register() is reached. That flow can happen for SFs. The child devlink gets linked to its parent before registration, then a later probe error calls devlink_free() directly. Since the instance was never registered, devl_unregister() is not called and devlink->rel is leaked. Release any pending relation from devlink_free() as well. The registered path is unchanged because devl_unregister() already clears devlink->rel before devlink_free() runs. 2026-05-25devlink: pass param values by pointerRatheesh Kannoth
union devlink_param_value grows substantially once U64 array parameters are added to devlink (from 32 bytes to over 264 bytes). devlink_nl_param_value_fill_one() and devlink_nl_param_value_put() copy the union by value in several places. Passing two instances as value arguments alone consumes over 528 bytes of stack; combined with deeper call chains the parameter stack can approach 800 bytes and trip CONFIG_FRAME_WARN more easily. Currently, there is no good object to pin the configuration knobs on. Introduce a shared devlink instance, instantiated upon probe of the first PF and removed during remove of the last PF. The shared devlink instance is not backed by any device device, as there is no PCI device related to it. The implementation uses reference counting to manage the lifecycle: each PF that probes calls devlink_shd_get() to get or create the shared instance, and calls devlink_shd_put() when it removes. The shared instance is automatically destroyed when the last PF removes. Example: pci/0000:08:00.0: index 0 nested_devlink: auxiliary/mlx5_core.eth.0 devlink_index/1: index 1 nested_devlink: pci/0000:08:00.0 pci/0000:08:00.1 auxiliary/mlx5_core.eth.0: index 2 pci/0000:08:00.1: index 3 nested_devlink: auxiliary/mlx5_core.eth.1 auxiliary/mlx5_core.eth.1: index 4 Signed-off-by: Jiri Pirko <jiri@nvidia.com> Link: https://patch.msgid.link/20260312100407.551173-12-jiri@resnulli.us Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org>
2026-03-14devlink: allow devlink instance allocation without a backing deviceJiri Pirko
Allow devlink_alloc_ns() to be called with dev=NULL to support device-less devlink instances. When dev is NULL, the instance is identified over netlink using "devlink_index" as bus_name and the decimal index value as dev_name. 2026-03-14devlink: add devl_warn() helper and use it in port warningsJiri Pirko
Introduce devl_warn() macro that uses dev_warn() when a backing device is available and falls back to pr_warn() otherwise. 2026-03-14devlink: introduce __devlink_alloc() with dev driver pointerJiri Pirko
Introduce __devlink_alloc() as an internal devlink allocator that accepts a struct device_driver pointer and stores it in the devlink instance. This allows internal devlink code (e.g. shared instances) to associate a driver with a devlink instance without need to pass dev pointer. 2026-03-14devlink: support index-based lookup via bus_name/dev_name handleJiri Pirko
Devlink instances without a backing device use bus_name "devlink_index" and dev_name set to the decimal index string. When user space sends this handle, detect the pattern and perform a direct xarray lookup by index instead of iterating all instances. 2026-03-14devlink: allow to use devlink index as a command handleJiri Pirko
Currently devlink instances are addressed bus_name/dev_name tuple. Allow the newly introduced DEVLINK_ATTR_INDEX to be used as an alternative handle for all devlink commands. When DEVLINK_ATTR_INDEX is present in the request, use it for a direct xarray lookup instead of iterating over all instances comparing bus_name/dev_name strings. 2026-03-14devlink: add helpers to get bus_name/dev_nameJiri Pirko
Introduce devlink_bus_name() and devlink_dev_name() helpers and convert all direct accesses to devlink->dev->bus->name and dev_name(devlink->dev) to use them. This prepares for dev-less devlink instances where these helpers will be extended to handle the missing device. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_flex' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This is the exact same thing as the 'alloc_obj()' version, only much smaller because there are a lot fewer users of the *alloc_flex() interface. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar typesKees Cook
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>
2026-02-02devlink: Refactor devlink_rate_nodes_checkCosmin Ratiu
devlink_rate_nodes_check() was used to verify there are no devlink rate nodes created when switching the esw mode. Rate management code is about to become more complex, so refactor this function: - remove unused param 'mode'. - add a new 'rate_filter' param. - rename to devlink_rates_check(). - expose devlink_rate_is_node() to be used as a rate filter. This makes it more usable from multiple places, so use it from those places as well. 2026-02-02devlink: Reverse locking order for nested instancesCosmin Ratiu
Commit [1] defined the locking expectations for nested devlink instances: the nested-in devlink instance lock needs to be acquired before the nested devlink instance lock. The code handling devlink rels was architected with that assumption in mind. There are no actual users of double locking yet but that is about to change in the upcoming patches in the series. Code operating on nested devlink instances will require also obtaining the nested-in instance lock, but such code may already be called from a variety of places with the nested devlink instance lock. Then, there's no way to acquire the nested-in lock other than making sure that all callers acquire it first. Reversing the nested lock order allows incrementally acquiring the nested-in instance lock when needed (perhaps even a chain of locks up to the root) without affecting any caller. The only affected use of nesting is devlink_nl_nested_fill(), which iterates over nested devlink instances with the RCU lock, without locking them, so there's no possibility of deadlock. So this commit just updates a comment regarding the nested locks. 2025-11-20devlink: support default values for param-get and param-setDaniel Zahka
Support querying and resetting to default param values. Introduce two new devlink netlink attrs: DEVLINK_ATTR_PARAM_VALUE_DEFAULT and DEVLINK_ATTR_PARAM_RESET_DEFAULT. The former is used to contain an optional parameter value inside of the param_value nested attribute. The latter is used in param-set requests from userspace to indicate that the driver should reset the param to its default value. To implement this, two new functions are added to the devlink driver api: devlink_param::get_default() and devlink_param::reset_default(). These callbacks allow drivers to implement default param actions for runtime and permanent cmodes. For driverinit params, the core latches the last value set by a driver via devl_param_driverinit_value_set(), and uses that as the default value for a param. Because default parameter values are optional, it would be impossible to discern whether or not a param of type bool has default value of false or not provided if the default value is encoded using a netlink flag type. For this reason, when a DEVLINK_PARAM_TYPE_BOOL has an associated default value, the default value is encoded using a u8 type. 2025-11-18devlink: rate: Unset parent pointer in devl_rate_nodes_destroyShay Drory
The function devl_rate_nodes_destroy is documented to "Unset parent for all rate objects". However, it was only calling the driver-specific `rate_leaf_parent_set` or `rate_node_parent_set` ops and decrementing the parent's refcount, without actually setting the `devlink_rate->parent` pointer to NULL. This leaves a dangling pointer in the `devlink_rate` struct, which cause refcount error in netdevsim[1] and mlx5[2]. In addition, this is inconsistent with the behavior of `devlink_nl_rate_parent_node_set`, where the parent pointer is correctly cleared. This patch fixes the issue by explicitly setting `devlink_rate->parent` to NULL after notifying the driver, thus fulfilling the function's documented behavior for all rate objects. 2025-11-11devlink: Introduce switchdev_inactive eswitch modeSaeed Mahameed
Adds DEVLINK_ESWITCH_MODE_SWITCHDEV_INACTIVE attribute to UAPI and documentation. Before having traffic flow through an eswitch, a user may want to have the ability to block traffic towards the FDB until FDB is fully programmed and the user is ready to send traffic to it. For example: when two eswitches are present for vports in a multi-PF setup, one eswitch may take over the traffic from the other when the user chooses. Before this take over, a user may want to first program the inactive eswitch and then once ready redirect traffic to this new eswitch. switchdev modes transition semantics: legacy->switchdev_inactive: Create switchdev mode normally, traffic not allowed to flow yet. switchdev_inactive->switchdev: Enable traffic to flow. switchdev->switchdev_inactive: Block traffic on the FDB, FDB and representros state and content is preserved. When eswitch is configured to this mode, traffic is ignored/dropped on this eswitch FDB, while current configuration is kept, e.g FDB rules and netdev representros are kept available, FDB programming is allowed. Example: # start inactive switchdev devlink dev eswitch set pci/0000:08:00.1 mode switchdev_inactive # setup TC rules, representors etc .. # activate devlink dev eswitch set pci/0000:08:00.1 mode switchdev Signed-off-by: Saeed Mahameed <saeedm@nvidia.com> Reviewed-by: Jiri Pirko <jiri@nvidia.com> Link: https://patch.msgid.link/20251108070404.1551708-2-saeed@kernel.org Signed-off-by: Paolo Abeni <pabeni@redhat.com>
