2026-08-14rust: introduce abstractions for fwctlZhi Wang
Introduce safe Rust wrappers around struct fwctl_device and struct fwctl_uctx. This lets Rust drivers register fwctl devices and implement firmware RPC callbacks through a typed trait interface. The abstraction keeps lifetime and reference-count handling inside the wrapper, exposes pinned per-FD user contexts to drivers, and validates the layout assumptions required by the C fwctl allocation model. Allocation sizes are padded so the kmalloc-backed C allocations also satisfy Rust alignment requirements. Registration owns driver private data with a lifetime tied to the bound parent device and verifies the parent identity before registration. Callbacks access that data through a higher-ranked closure, preventing its erased lifetime from escaping, while Device remains only the refcounted fwctl object. This avoids requiring Rust drop glue from the fwctl_device release path after unregister or module teardown. RPC callbacks receive typed scope information, a mutable request/response buffer, and the userspace output-buffer size. Response pointer conversion, length validation, and raw output-length handling remain inside the abstraction. Add the Rust sources to the FWCTL MAINTAINERS entry and add myself as the maintainer for the Rust abstractions. s390 does not provide ioremap()/iounmap() when CONFIG_HAS_IOMEM is not set (which requires CONFIG_PCI on that architecture). Note that the C API is inconsistent about this. For instance, devm_ioremap() has no stub and produces a link failure without CONFIG_HAS_IOMEM, whereas devm_platform_ioremap_resource() provides an inline stub returning -EINVAL. The approach taken here (compile-time gating) matches the former, which is slightly more appropriate since any driver performing MMIO currently requires CONFIG_HAS_IOMEM. Ideally, s390 should provide ioremap()/iounmap() stubs unconditionally (as UML already does), removing the need for any config gating as discussed in [1]; a follow-up patch for s390 is expected. When building with LLVM=1 for architectures like powerpc where CONFIG_DMA_SHARED_BUFFER is not enabled, the build fails with: ld.lld: error: undefined symbol: dma_resv_reset_max_fences >>> referenced by helpers.c >>> rust/helpers/helpers.o:(rust_helper_dma_resv_unlock) The issue occurs because: 1. CONFIG_DEBUG_MUTEXES=y is enabled 2. CONFIG_DMA_SHARED_BUFFER is not enabled 3. dma_resv_reset_max_fences() is declared in the header when CONFIG_DEBUG_MUTEXES is set 4. But the function is only compiled in drivers/dma-buf/dma-resv.c, which is only built when CONFIG_DMA_SHARED_BUFFER is enabled 5. Rust helpers call dma_resv_unlock() which calls dma_resv_reset_max_fences(), causing an undefined symbol Fix this by compiling `dma-resv.c` file only when CONFIG_DMA_SHARED_BUFFER is enabled. This implements a safe and relatively simple API over the netlink API, that allows you to add different attributes to a netlink message and broadcast it. As the first user of this API only makes use of broadcast, only broadcast messages are supported here. This API is intended to be safe and to be easy to use in *generated* code. This is because netlink is generally used with yaml files that describe the underlying API, and the python generator outputs C code (or, soon, Rust code) that lets you use the API more easily. So for example, if there is a string field, the code generator will output a method that internall calls `put_string()` with the right attr type. One feature that was lost from the old `dma_read!` and `dma_write!` when moving to `io_read!` and `io_write!` was the ability to read/write a large structs. However, the semantics was unclear to begin with, as there was no guarantee about their atomicity even for structs that were small enough to fit in u32. Re-introduce the capability in the form of copying methods. dma_read!(foo, bar) -> io_project!(foo, bar).copy_read() dma_write!(foo, bar, baz) -> io_project!(foo, bar).copy_write(baz) Model these semantics after memcpy so user has clear expectation of lack of atomicity. As an additional benefit of this change, this now works for MMIO as well by mapping them to `memcpy_{from,to}io`. For slices which is DST so the `copy_read` and `copy_write` API above can't work, add `copy_from_slice` and `copy_to_slice` to copy from/to normal memory. You can see how weird it is by grepping for task_euid() - binder is its only user. task_euid() obtains the objective effective UID - it looks at the credentials of the task for purposes of acting on it as an object, but then accesses the effective UID (which the credentials.7 man page describes as "[...] used by the kernel to determine the permissions that the process will have when accessing shared resources [...]"). Since usage in Binder has now been removed, get rid of the resulting dead code. Changes to the zh_CN translation was carried out with the help of Gemini and Google Translate, and since adjusted as per Alex Shi's feedback. Commit 47ac2a4b5cd8 ("rust: kvec: implement shrink_to for KVVec") introduced a call to bindings::is_vmalloc_addr(). However, this fails to compile on architectures where CONFIG_MMU is disabled, resulting in the following build error: error[E0425]: cannot find function `is_vmalloc_addr` in crate `bindings` --> rust/kernel/alloc/kvec.rs:781:32 | 781 | if !unsafe { bindings::is_vmalloc_addr(self.ptr.as_ptr().cast()) } { | ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ not found in `bindings` When CONFIG_MMU is not set, is_vmalloc_addr() is defined as a static inline function in <linux/mm.h> that unconditionally returns false. Because bindgen skips static inline functions when generating bindings, the symbol is completely missing from the Rust bindings crate. Fix this by providing a C helper wrapper, rust_helper_is_vmalloc_addr(), in rust/helpers/vmalloc.c. This ensures the function is reliably exposed to Rust regardless of the MMU configuration. On NOMMU builds, this allows KVVec::shrink_to() to successfully compile and correctly route all allocations through the kmalloc realloc path. This provides a mechanism to create (or look up) VMBO instances, which represent the mapping between GPUVM and GEM objects. The GpuVmBoRegistered<T> type can be considered like ARef<GpuVm<T>>, except that no way to increment the refcount is provided. The GpuVmBoAlloc<T> type is more akin to a pre-allocated GpuVmBo<T>, so it's not really a GpuVmBo<T> yet. Its destructor could call drm_gpuvm_bo_destroy_not_in_lists(), but as the type is currently private and never called anywhere, this perf optimization does not need to happen now. Pre-allocating and obtaining the gpuvm_bo object is exposed as a single step. This could theoretically be a problem if one wanted to call drm_gpuvm_bo_obtain_prealloc() during the fence signalling critical path, but that's not a possibility because: 1. Adding the BO to the extobj list requires the resv lock, so it cannot happen during the fence signalling critical path. 2. obtain() requires that the BO is not in the extobj list, so obtain() must be called before adding the BO to the extobj list. Thus, drm_gpuvm_bo_obtain_prealloc() cannot be called during the fence signalling critical path. (For extobjs at least.) Add a GPUVM abstraction to be used by Rust GPU drivers. GPUVM keeps track of a GPU's virtual address (VA) space and manages the corresponding virtual mappings represented by "GPU VA" objects. It also keeps track of the gem::Object<T> used to back the mappings through GpuVmBo<T>. This abstraction is only usable by drivers that wish to use GPUVM in immediate mode. This allows us to build the locking scheme into the API design. It means that the GEM mutex is used for the GEM gpuva list, and that the resv lock is used for the extobj list. The evicted list is not yet used in this version. This abstraction provides a special handle called the UniqueRefGpuVm, which is a wrapper around ARef<GpuVm> that provides access to the interval tree. Export `acpi_of_match_device` function and use it to match the of device table against ACPI PRP0001 in Rust. This fixes id_info being None on ACPI PRP0001 devices. Using `device_get_match_data` is not possible, because Rust stores an index in the of device id instead of a data pointer. This was done this way to provide a convenient and obvious API for drivers, which can be evaluated in const context without the use of any unstable language features. Because of LLVM inling checks, it's generally not possible to inline a C helper into Rust code, even with LTO: * LLVM doesn't want to inline functions compiled with `-fno-delete-null-pointer-checks` with code compiled without. The C CGUs all have this enabled and Rust CGUs don't. Inlining is okay since this is one of the hardening features that does not change the ABI, and we shouldn't have null pointer dereferences in these helpers. * LLVM doesn't want to inline functions with different list of builtins. C side has `-fno-builtin-wcslen`; `wcslen` is not a Rust builtin, so they should be compatible, but LLVM does not perform inlining due to attributes mismatch. * clang and Rust doesn't have the exact target string. Clang generates `+cmov,+cx8,+fxsr` but Rust doesn't enable them (in fact, Rust will complain if `-Ctarget-feature=+cmov,+cx8,+fxsr` is used). x86-64 always enable these features, so they are in fact the same target string, but LLVM doesn't understand this and so inlining is inhibited. This can be bypassed with `--ignore-tti-inline-compatible`, but this is a hidden option. To fix this, we can add __always_inline on every helper, which skips these LLVM inlining checks. For this purpose, introduce a new __rust_helper macro that needs to be added to every helper. Most helpers already have __rust_helper specified, but there are a few missing. The only consequence of this is that those specific helpers do not get inlined. 2026-03-08rust: sync: atomic: Add Atomic<*{mut,const} T> supportBoqun Feng
Atomic pointer support is an important piece of synchronization algorithm, e.g. RCU, hence provide the support for that. Note that instead of relying on atomic_long or the implementation of `Atomic<usize>`, a new set of helpers (atomic_ptr_*) is introduced for atomic pointer specifically, this is because ptr2int casting would lose the provenance of a pointer and even though in theory there are a few tricks the provenance can be restored, it'll still be a simpler implementation if C could provide atomic pointers directly. The side effects of this approach are: we don't have the arithmetic and logical operations for pointers yet and the current implementation only works on ARCH_SUPPORTS_ATOMIC_RMW architectures, but these are implementation issues and can be added later. 2026-03-08rust: helpers: Generify the definitions of rust_helper_*_cmpxchg*Boqun Feng
To support atomic pointers, more cmpxchg helpers will be introduced, hence define macros to generate these helpers to ease the introduction of the future helpers.
