5 daysBluetooth: L2CAP: fix race l2cap_sock_cleanup_listen() vs. put_chanPauli Virtanen
For L2CAP sockets without owning sk->sk_socket, reading l2cap_pi(sk)->chan may race against concurrent l2cap_sock_kill() -> l2cap_sock_put_chan(). This excludes simultaneous proto_ops callbacks, but access in l2cap_sock_cleanup_listen() has unsafe lockless read. [Task 1] [Task 2 (hdev->workqueue)] l2cap_sock_release(parent) l2cap_disconn_cfm l2cap_sock_cleanup_listen l2cap_conn_del bt_accept_dequeue l2cap_chan_del lock_sock(sk) l2cap_sock_teardown_cb bt_accept_unlink bt_sk(sk)->parent = NULL release_sock(sk) ----------------> lock_sock(sk) parent = /* NULL */ lock_sock(sk) <--------------------- release_sock(sk) sock_set_flag(sk, SOCK_ZAPPED) l2cap_sock_close_cb l2cap_sock_kill(sk) l2cap_sock_put_chan chan = READ l2cap_pi(sk)->chan l2cap_pi(sk)->chan = NULL l2cap_chan_hold_unless_zero l2cap_put_chan(chan) kref_get_unless_zero(&chan->ref) Task 1 may observe NULL which causes null-ptr-deref. Fix the race by taking lock_sock() in l2cap_sock_kill() to synchronize with l2cap_sock_cleanup_listen(). hold_unless_zero() is not needed here, l2cap_pi(sk)->chan owns reference if it is non-NULL. Clarify code comments vs. locking. 5 daysBluetooth: mgmt: fix 'hdev->discovery.uuids' NULL dereferencePavel Shpakovskiy
'uuid_count' member of struct 'discovery_state' is assigned and read without any locks, so there is a chance of situation when uuid_count != 0, but uuids is NULL and there will be NULL pointer dereference. Possible race: 'hci_update_passive_scan_sync' 'hci_discovery_filter_clear' hdev->discovery.uuid_count = 0; <----------------------preempted-----------------------------> 'start_service_discovery' // Set uuid_count to value != 0 hdev->discovery.uuid_count = uuid_count; hdev->discovery.uuids = kmemdup(...); <----------------------preempted-----------------------------> spin_lock(&hdev->discovery.lock); kfree(hdev->discovery.uuids); hdev->discovery.uuids = NULL; spin_unlock(&hdev->discovery.lock); Now uuids == NULL and uuid_count != 0. So 'mgmt_device_found' -> 'is_filter_match' -> 'eir_has_uuids' receives non consistent discovery state, where NULL dereference of uuids happens. To fix it let's add discovery.lock around every read/write of uuid_count, uuids pair of struct members. It is also important to assign uuid_count value only after success kmemdup() allocation in start_service_discovery(), otherwise uuids is NULL, because kmemdup failed, but uuid_count is already assigned to non zero value. The following panic happens: [ ] ------------[ cut here ]------------ [ ] Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000000000000000 [ ] Internal error: Oops: 0000000096000006 [#1] PREEMPT SMP [ ] CPU: 0 PID: 15056 Comm: kworker/u9:2 [ ] Workqueue: hci0 hci_rx_work [ ] pstate: 10400009 (nzcV daif +PAN -UAO -TCO -DIT -SSBS BTYPE=--) [ ] pc : eir_has_uuids+0x2d8/0x590 [ ] lr : is_filter_match+0x258/0x320 ... 2026-08-07Bluetooth: hci_event: Use 255 as max event payload length in hci_ev_table[]Zijun Hu
hci_event_func() validates skb->len against ev->max_len from the entry in hci_ev_table[]. By then, the header has already been stripped by skb_pull(). So the max event payload is 255, but hci_ev_table[] still uses HCI_MAX_EVENT_SIZE (260) for it, which is imprecise. Fix by introducing HCI_MAX_EVENT_PLEN (255) and using it instead. 2026-08-07Bluetooth: hci_event: Introduce handle_ev_vendor() for HCI_EV_VENDORZijun Hu
Introduce the hook to solve issues below: msft_vendor_evt(), the current handler for all VSEs, is unsuitable since: - many VSEs are not MSFT ones; - it always corrupts the non-MSFT VSEs by calling skb_pull_data() once the MSFT extension is enabled. Several issues are caused by many transport drivers pre-processing VSEs in their RX path, often an IRQ-disabled atomic context. Take the two typical cases below as examples: Case 1: // no btmon log, no way to reach userspace Step 1: handle and free @original_skb directly Case 2: // hurts performance and consumes GFP_ATOMIC memory Step 1: cloned_skb = skb_clone(original_skb, GFP_ATOMIC); // the VSE is handled here Step 2: handle and free @cloned_skb Step 3: hci_recv_frame(hdev, original_skb); // already handled, but re-enters the stack's event-handling path Step 4: hci_event_packet(hdev, original_skb); Fix by introducing the hook with usage: 1) the transport driver registers the hook for VSEs of interest; 2) the stack calls it in process context, handling the VSE like any other event: - if interested, handle the VSE - no need to free it - and return true; - otherwise return false. 2026-08-07Bluetooth: hci_core: Introduce __hci_reset_dev() with a hardware error codeZijun Hu
hci_reset_dev() injects a constant hardware error code 0x00 to restart the device. But a transport driver may need a different error code. Fix by introducing __hci_reset_dev(hdev, hw_err_code), which will be used by a follow-up patch. 2026-08-07Bluetooth: coredump: Expose header size and end marker to driversZijun Hu
To separate the coredump header and data far more easily, give a vendor driver the option to pad its header to a fixed size, by moving the header size limit and ending marker to coredump.h: - HCI_DEVCD_HDR_SIZE_MAX: the max header size - HCI_DEVCD_HDR_END_MARKER: the header-ending marker Signed-off-by: Zijun Hu <zijun.hu@oss.qualcomm.com> Signed-off-by: Luiz Augusto von Dentz <luiz.von.dentz@intel.com>
2026-08-07Bluetooth: add annotations for l2cap_data locking contextPauli Virtanen
Add context analysis annotations for hci_conn::l2cap_data locking. Also add necessary lockdep_assert_held() and __must_hold annotations to prove the access is safe. The access in smp_conn_security() is supposed to be guarded by the caller holding lock that blocks concurrent l2cap_conn_del() eg. hdev->lock, conn->lock or chan->lock. Mark unsafe as can't be automatically checked now. Signed-off-by: Pauli Virtanen <pav@iki.fi> Signed-off-by: Luiz Augusto von Dentz <luiz.von.dentz@intel.com>
2026-08-07Bluetooth: Add MGMT Load Connection Subrate commandLuiz Augusto von Dentz
Add MGMT_OP_LOAD_CONN_SUBRATE (0x005C) command to load per-device connection subrate parameters when the SCI feature is supported. Add MGMT_EV_CONN_SUBRATE (0x0033) event to notify userspace when connection rate changes occur via the LE Connection Rate Change HCI event. Add subrate fields (subrate_min, subrate_max, max_latency, cont_num) to struct hci_conn_params to store the loaded subrate parameters, and the corresponding le_rate_* fields to struct hci_conn to track the parameters currently in use. When a single entry is loaded for an already-connected central, or on connection completion, the LE Connection Rate Request procedure is initiated to apply the parameters. 2026-08-07Bluetooth: Add MGMT Shorter Connection Interval settingLuiz Augusto von Dentz
Add MGMT_SETTING_SCI (bit 25) to advertise support for the Shorter Connection Interval (SCI) feature. It is reported in the supported settings whenever the controller is SCI capable, and in the current settings whenever LE is enabled and the controller is SCI capable (SCI has no separate enable command, so it is a passive capability). 2026-08-07Bluetooth: hci: Introduce hci_acl_handle() and hci_acl_dlen() helpersZijun Hu

2026-08-07Bluetooth: coredump: Introduce and apply hci_devcd_state_name()Zijun Hu
Introduce hci_devcd_state_name() to describe the devcoredump state by a string name instead of a plain number, for several reasons: 1) Applying it in coredump.c makes the devcoredump state in log messages more readable than a plain number. 2) Transport drivers may need to show the devcoredump state name too. 3) In future, the universal state name could be notified to userspace via uevent, allowing a universal application (e.g. a daemon) to be developed to save the coredump, which is otherwise discarded by the device coredump core after 5 minutes (DEVCD_TIMEOUT); see nxp_coredump_notify(). Also drop a trailing space from two bt_dev_dbg() format strings while applying it in coredump.c. 2026-08-07Bluetooth: hci_sync: Introduce __hci_reset_sync() for device driversZijun Hu

2026-08-07Bluetooth: hci_sync: Remove unused hci_cmd_sync_dequeue_once()Siwei Zhang
hci_cmd_sync_dequeue_once() had a single in-tree caller, hci_cancel_connect_sync(), which now holds cmd_sync_work_lock across the in-flight create flag test and the dequeue and so open-codes the lookup and cancel under that lock. That leaves the exported hci_cmd_sync_dequeue_once() with no in-tree user, so remove it along with its declaration. 2026-07-28Bluetooth: ISO: fix race of kfree vs kref_get_unless_zeroPauli Virtanen
hci_conn::iso_data is accessed and modified without lock or RCU. This leads to a race [Task hdev->workqueue] [Task 2] iso_recv iso_conn_put(conn) conn = LOAD hcon->iso_data iso_conn_free(conn) iso_conn_hold_unless_zero(conn) hcon->iso_data = NULL kfree(conn) kref_get_unless_zero(&conn->ref) /* UAF */ and also to races in iso_conn_add() vs. iso_conn_free(). 2026-07-13Bluetooth: mgmt: Translate HCI reason in Device Disconnected eventMikhail Gavrilov
MGMT_EV_DEVICE_DISCONNECTED carries a reason field which is defined to be one of MGMT_DEV_DISCONN_* (0x00..0x05). hci_disconn_complete_evt() converts the HCI error with hci_to_mgmt_reason(), but two other paths pass the raw HCI error straight through: hci_cs_disconnect() -> cp->reason mgmt_connect_failed() -> status The latter is reached whenever the adapter is powered off or suspended: hci_disconnect_all_sync() aborts every link with HCI_ERROR_REMOTE_POWER_OFF, hci_disconnect_sync() deliberately does not wait for HCI_EV_DISCONN_COMPLETE for that reason, so that hci_abort_conn_sync() finishes the connection off through hci_conn_failed() instead. As a result userspace sees an out of range reason: @ MGMT Event: Device Disconnected (0x000c) plen 8 BR/EDR Address: 8C:A9:6F:2C:51:46 Reason: Reserved (0x15) bluetoothd: btd_bearer_disconnected() Unknown disconnection value: 21 bluetoothd: device_disconnected() Unknown disconnection value: 21 Export hci_to_mgmt_reason() and use it in both places, so that a power off is reported as MGMT_DEV_DISCONN_REMOTE rather than as the raw HCI_ERROR_REMOTE_POWER_OFF (0x15). 2026-07-06Bluetooth: L2CAP: Fix use-after-free in l2cap_sock_new_connection_cb()Siwei Zhang
l2cap_sock_new_connection_cb() returned l2cap_pi(sk)->chan after release_sock(parent). Once the parent lock is dropped the newly enqueued child socket sk is reachable via the accept queue, so another task can accept and free it before the callback dereferences sk, resulting in a use-after-free. Rework the ->new_connection() op so the core, rather than the callback, owns the child channel's lifetime. The op now receives a pre-allocated new_chan and returns an errno instead of allocating and returning a channel. l2cap_new_connection() allocates the child channel and links it into the conn list via __l2cap_chan_add() before invoking the callback, so the conn-list reference keeps the channel alive once release_sock(parent) exposes the socket to other tasks. Channel configuration that was duplicated in l2cap_sock_init() and the various new_connection callbacks is consolidated into l2cap_chan_set_defaults(), which now inherits from the parent channel when one is supplied. 2026-07-06Bluetooth: hci_conn: Fix null ptr deref in hci_abort_conn()Siwei Zhang
hci_abort_conn() read hci_skb_event(hdev->sent_cmd) when a connection was pending, but hdev->sent_cmd can be NULL while req_status is still HCI_REQ_PEND, leading to a NULL pointer dereference and a general protection fault from the hci_rx_work() receive path. Instead of inspecting hdev->sent_cmd, track the in-flight create connection command with a new per-connection HCI_CONN_CREATE flag and route all cancellation through hci_cancel_connect_sync(), which dispatches to a dedicated per-type cancel function. The create command is in exactly one of two states: still queued, or in flight. The cancel function holds cmd_sync_work_lock across the whole decision: the worker takes this lock to dequeue every entry, so while it is held a queued command cannot start running and an in-flight command cannot complete and let the next command become pending. This keeps the flag test and hci_cmd_sync_cancel() atomic with respect to the worker, so a queued command is simply dequeued, and an in-flight command owned by this connection is cancelled without the risk of cancelling an unrelated command that became pending in the meantime. CIS uses the same flag mechanism via HCI_CONN_CREATE_CIS but cannot be dequeued per-connection. hci_acl_create_conn_sync() and hci_le_create_conn_sync() clear HCI_CONN_CREATE after the create command completes, but the command status handler can free conn via hci_conn_del() (for example when the controller rejects the connection) while the worker is still blocked on the connection complete event. Hold a reference on conn across the create command so the flag can be cleared without a use-after-free. 2026-06-03Bluetooth: L2CAP: reject BR/EDR signaling packets over MTUsigMichael Bommarito
net/bluetooth/l2cap_core.c:l2cap_sig_channel() accepts BR/EDR signaling packets up to the channel MTU and dispatches each command without enforcing the signaling MTU (MTUsig). A Bluetooth BR/EDR peer within radio range can send a fixed-channel CID 0x0001 packet that is larger than MTUsig and contains many L2CAP_ECHO_REQ commands before pairing. In a real-radio stock-kernel run, one 681-byte signaling packet containing 168 zero-length ECHO_REQ commands made the target transmit 168 ECHO_RSP frames over about 220 ms. Impact: a Bluetooth BR/EDR peer within radio range, before pairing, can force 168 ECHO_RSP frames from one 681-byte fixed-channel signaling packet containing packed ECHO_REQ commands. Define Linux's BR/EDR signaling MTU as the spec minimum of 48 bytes and reject any larger signaling packet with one L2CAP_COMMAND_REJECT_RSP carrying L2CAP_REJ_MTU_EXCEEDED before any command is dispatched. The Bluetooth Core spec wording for MTUExceeded says the reject identifier shall match the first request command in the packet, and that packets containing only responses shall be silently discarded. Linux intentionally deviates from that prescription: silently discarding desynchronizes the peer because the remote stack never learns its responses were dropped, and locating the first request command requires walking command headers past MTUsig, i.e. processing bytes from a packet we have already decided is too large to process. We therefore always emit one reject and use the identifier from the first command header, a single fixed-offset byte read. The unrestricted BR/EDR signaling parser and ECHO_REQ response path both trace to the initial git import; no later introducing commit is available for a Fixes tag. 2026-05-06Bluetooth: l2cap: defer conn param update to avoid conn->lock/hdev->lock ↵Mikhail Gavrilov
inversion When a BLE peripheral sends an L2CAP Connection Parameter Update Request the processing path is: process_pending_rx() [takes conn->lock] l2cap_le_sig_channel() l2cap_conn_param_update_req() hci_le_conn_update() [takes hdev->lock] Meanwhile other code paths take the locks in the opposite order: l2cap_chan_connect() [takes hdev->lock] ... mutex_lock(&conn->lock) l2cap_conn_ready() [hdev->lock via hci_cb_list_lock] ... mutex_lock(&conn->lock) This is a classic AB/BA deadlock which lockdep reports as a circular locking dependency when connecting a BLE MIDI keyboard (Carry-On FC-49). Fix this by making hci_le_conn_update() defer the HCI command through hci_cmd_sync_queue() so it no longer needs to take hdev->lock in the caller context. The sync callback uses __hci_cmd_sync_status_sk() to wait for the HCI_EV_LE_CONN_UPDATE_COMPLETE event, then updates the stored connection parameters (hci_conn_params) and notifies userspace (mgmt_new_conn_param) only after the controller has confirmed the update. A reference on hci_conn is held via hci_conn_get()/hci_conn_put() for the lifetime of the queued work to prevent use-after-free, and hci_conn_valid() is checked before proceeding in case the connection was removed while the work was pending. The hci_dev_lock is held across hci_conn_valid() and all conn field accesses to prevent a concurrent disconnect from invalidating the connection mid-use. 2026-04-13Bluetooth: hci.h: Avoid a couple -Wflex-array-member-not-at-end warningsGustavo A. R. Silva
-Wflex-array-member-not-at-end was introduced in GCC-14, and we are getting ready to enable it, globally. struct hci_std_codecs and struct hci_std_codecs_v2 are flexible structures, this is structures that contain a flexible-array member (__u8 codec[]; and struct hci_std_codec_v2 codec[];, correspondingly.) Since struct hci_rp_read_local_supported_codecs and struct hci_rp_read_local_supported_codecs_v2 are defined by hardware, we create the new struct hci_std_codecs_hdr and struct hci_std_codecs_v2_hdr types, and use them to replace the object types causing trouble in struct hci_rp_read_local_supported_codecs and struct hci_rp_read_local_supported_codecs_v2, namely struct hci_std_codecs std_codecs; and struct hci_std_codecs_v2_hdr std_codecs;. Also, once -fms-extensions is enabled, we can use transparent struct members in both struct hci_std_codecs and struct hci_std_codecs_v2_hdr. Notice that the newly created types does not contain the flex-array member `codec`, which is the object causing the -Wfamnae warnings. After these changes, the size of struct hci_rp_read_local_supported_codecs and struct hci_rp_read_local_supported_codecs_v2, along with their member's offsets remain the same, hence the memory layouts don't change: Before changes: struct hci_rp_read_local_supported_codecs { __u8 status; /* 0 1 */ struct hci_std_codecs std_codecs; /* 1 1 */ struct hci_vnd_codecs vnd_codecs; /* 2 1 */ /* size: 3, cachelines: 1, members: 3 */ /* last cacheline: 3 bytes */ } __attribute__((__packed__)); struct hci_rp_read_local_supported_codecs_v2 { __u8 status; /* 0 1 */ struct hci_std_codecs_v2 std_codecs; /* 1 1 */ struct hci_vnd_codecs_v2 vendor_codecs; /* 2 1 */ /* size: 3, cachelines: 1, members: 3 */ /* last cacheline: 3 bytes */ } __attribute__((__packed__)); After changes: struct hci_rp_read_local_supported_codecs { __u8 status; /* 0 1 */ struct hci_std_codecs_hdr std_codecs; /* 1 1 */ struct hci_vnd_codecs vnd_codecs; /* 2 1 */ /* size: 3, cachelines: 1, members: 3 */ /* last cacheline: 3 bytes */ } __attribute__((__packed__)); struct hci_rp_read_local_supported_codecs_v2 { __u8 status; /* 0 1 */ struct hci_std_codecs_v2_hdr std_codecs; /* 1 1 */ struct hci_vnd_codecs_v2 vendor_codecs; /* 2 1 */ /* size: 3, cachelines: 1, members: 3 */ /* last cacheline: 3 bytes */ } __attribute__((__packed__)); With these changes fix the following warnings: include/net/bluetooth/hci.h:1490:31: warning: structure containing a flexible array member is not at the end of another structure [-Wflex-array-member-not-at-end] include/net/bluetooth/hci.h:1525:34: warning: structure containing a flexible array member is not at the end of another structure [-Wflex-array-member-not-at-end] Signed-off-by: Gustavo A. 2025-11-20Bluetooth: hci_core: lookup hci_conn on RX path on protocol sidePauli Virtanen
The hdev lock/lookup/unlock/use pattern in the packet RX path doesn't ensure hci_conn* is not concurrently modified/deleted. This locking appears to be leftover from before conn_hash started using RCU commit bf4c63252490b ("Bluetooth: convert conn hash to RCU") and not clear if it had purpose since then. Currently, there are code paths that delete hci_conn* from elsewhere than the ordered hdev->workqueue where the RX work runs in. E.g. commit 5af1f84ed13a ("Bluetooth: hci_sync: Fix UAF on hci_abort_conn_sync") introduced some of these, and there probably were a few others before it. It's better to do the locking so that even if these run concurrently no UAF is possible. 2025-10-31Bluetooth: MGMT: Fix OOB access in parse_adv_monitor_pattern()Ilia Gavrilov
In the parse_adv_monitor_pattern() function, the value of the 'length' variable is currently limited to HCI_MAX_EXT_AD_LENGTH(251). The size of the 'value' array in the mgmt_adv_pattern structure is 31. If the value of 'pattern[i].length' is set in the user space and exceeds 31, the 'patterns[i].value' array can be accessed out of bound when copied. Increasing the size of the 'value' array in the 'mgmt_adv_pattern' structure will break the userspace. Considering this, and to avoid OOB access revert the limits for 'offset' and 'length' back to the value of HCI_MAX_AD_LENGTH. Found by InfoTeCS on behalf of Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with SVACE. 2025-10-24Bluetooth: hci_core: Fix tracking of periodic advertisementLuiz Augusto von Dentz
Periodic advertising enabled flag cannot be tracked by the enabled flag since advertising and periodic advertising each can be enabled/disabled separately from one another causing the states to be inconsistent when for example an advertising set is disabled its enabled flag is set to false which is then used for periodic which has not being disabled. 2025-10-24Revert "Bluetooth: L2CAP: convert timeouts to secs_to_jiffies()"Frédéric Danis
This reverts commit c9d84da18d1e0d28a7e16ca6df8e6d47570501d4. It replaces in L2CAP calls to msecs_to_jiffies() to secs_to_jiffies() and updates the constants accordingly. But the constants are also used in LCAP Configure Request and L2CAP Configure Response which expect values in milliseconds. This may prevent correct usage of L2CAP channel. To fix it, keep those constants in milliseconds and so revert this change. 2025-10-24Bluetooth: MGMT: fix crash in set_mesh_sync and set_mesh_completePauli Virtanen
There is a BUG: KASAN: stack-out-of-bounds in set_mesh_sync due to memcpy from badly declared on-stack flexible array. Another crash is in set_mesh_complete() due to double list_del via mgmt_pending_valid + mgmt_pending_remove. Use DEFINE_FLEX to declare the flexible array right, and don't memcpy outside bounds. As mgmt_pending_valid removes the cmd from list, use mgmt_pending_free, and also report status on error. 2025-10-24Bluetooth: HCI: Fix tracking of advertisement set/instance 0x00Luiz Augusto von Dentz
This fixes the state tracking of advertisement set/instance 0x00 which is considered a legacy instance and is not tracked individually by adv_instances list, previously it was assumed that hci_dev itself would track it via HCI_LE_ADV but that is a global state not specifc to instance 0x00, so to fix it a new flag is introduced that only tracks the state of instance 0x00.
