2026-06-10perf tools: Fix uninitialized pathname on uncompressed fallback in ↵Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo
filename__decompress() filename__decompress() has an early return path for files that are not actually compressed. This path returns the fd from open() directly but never writes to the pathname output parameter, leaving the caller with an uninitialized buffer despite a successful return. Callers like dso__decompress_kmodule_path() pass pathname to decompress_kmodule() which uses it to set the decompressed file path. If pathname is uninitialized, subsequent operations on the path produce undefined behavior. Fix by setting pathname to an empty string on the uncompressed path. Callers already check for an empty pathname to distinguish temporary decompressed files (which need unlink) from the original file. 2026-04-13perf annotate: Use jump__delete when freeing LoongArch jumpsRong Bao
Currently, the initialization of loongarch_jump_ops does not contain an assignment to its .free field. This causes disasm_line__free() to fall through to ins_ops__delete() for LoongArch jump instructions. ins_ops__delete() will free ins_operands.source.raw and ins_operands.source.name, and these fields overlaps with ins_operands.jump.raw_comment and ins_operands.jump.raw_func_start. Since in loongarch_jump__parse(), these two fields are populated by strchr()-ing the same buffer, trying to free them will lead to undefined behavior. This invalid free usually leads to crashes: Process 1712902 (perf) of user 1000 dumped core. The fileloc is a copy of a pointer to a string but in places like symbol_disassemble__llvm this string appears to be freed setting up potential use-after-frees: llvm.c: ``` dl = disasm_line__new(args); if (dl == NULL) goto err; annotation_line__add(&dl->al, &notes->src->source); free(args->fileloc); ``` disasm.c: ``` static void annotation_line__init(struct annotation_line *al, struct annotate_args *args, int nr) { al->offset = args->offset; al->line = strdup(args->line); al->line_nr = args->line_nr; al->fileloc = args->fileloc; al->data_nr = nr; } struct disasm_line *disasm_line__new(struct annotate_args *args) { struct disasm_line *dl = NULL; struct annotation *notes = symbol__annotation(args->ms->sym); int nr = notes->src->nr_events; dl = zalloc(disasm_line_size(nr)); if (!dl) return NULL; annotation_line__init(&dl->al, args, nr); ``` Fix this by making the fileloc a copy of the underlying string in its init/exit. 2026-01-23perf annotate: Fix memcpy size in arch__grow_instructions()Suchit Karunakaran
The memcpy() in arch__grow_instructions() is copying the wrong number of bytes when growing from a non-allocated table. 2026-01-23perf disasm: Refactor arch__find and initialization of arch structsIan Rogers
Switch arch__find to using an ELF machine number rather than a string. Rather than an array of fixed size arch structs turn the init functions into new functions indexed by the ELF machine they correspond to. This allows data to be stored with a struct arch with the container_of trick, so the priv variable can be removed. Switch to using the thread to find the arch rather than the evsel as the evsel only has limited notions of the running thread upon which disassembly is performed. Factor out the e_machine and e_flags into their own struct to make them easier to pass around. LLVM disassembly support was in disasm.c and addr2line support in srcline.c. Move support out of these files into llvm.[ch] and remove LLVM includes from those files. As disassembly routines can fail, make failure the only option without HAVE_LIBLLVM_SUPPORT. For simplicity's sake, duplicate the read_symbol utility function. The intent with moving LLVM support into a single file is that dynamic support, using dlopen for libllvm, can be added in later patches. This can potentially always succeed or fail, so relying on ifdefs isn't sufficient. Using dlopen is a useful option to minimize the perf tools dependencies and potentially size. 2025-03-06perf annotate: Add annotation_options.disassembler_usedAthira Rajeev
When doing "perf annotate", perf tool provides option to use specific disassembler like llvm/objdump/capstone. The order picked is to use llvm first and if that fails fallback to objdump ie to use PERF_DISASM_LLVM, PERF_DISASM_CAPSTONE and PERF_DISASM_OBJDUMP In powerpc, when using "data type" sort keys, first preferred approach is to read the raw instruction from the DSO. In objdump is specified in "--objdump" option, it picks the symbol disassemble using objdump. Currently disasm_line__parse_powerpc() function uses length of the "line" to determine if objdump is used. But there are few cases, where if objdump doesn't recognise the instruction, the disassembled string will be empty. Example: 134cdc: c4 05 82 41 beq 1352a0 <getcwd+0x6e0> 134ce0: ac 00 8e 40 bne cr3,134d8c <getcwd+0x1cc> 134ce4: 0f 00 10 04 pld r9,1028308 ====>134ce8: d4 b0 20 e5 134cec: 16 00 40 39 li r10,22 134cf0: 48 01 21 ea ld r17,328(r1) So depending on length of line will give bad results. Add a new filed to annotation options structure, "struct annotation_options" to save the disassembler used. Use this info to determine if disassembly is done while parsing the disasm line. Prior to this change a string was used which could cause issues with an unrecognized disassembler in symbol__disassembler. Change to initializing an array of perf_disassembler enum values. If a value already exists then adding it a second time is ignored to avoid array out of bounds problems present in the previous code, it also allows a statically sized array and removes memory allocation needs. Errors in the disassembler string are reported when the config is parsed during perf annotate or perf top start up. If the array is uninitialized after processing the config file the default llvm, capstone then objdump values are added but without a need to parse a string. 2024-11-13perf disasm: Allow configuring what disassemblers to useArnaldo Carvalho de Melo
The perf tools annotation code used for a long time parsing the output of binutils's objdump (or its reimplementations, like llvm's) to then parse and augment it with samples, allow navigation, etc. More recently disassemblers from the capstone and llvm (libraries, not parsing the output of tools using those libraries to mimic binutils's objdump output) were introduced. So when all those methods are available, there is a static preference for a series of attempts of disassembling a binary, with the 'llvm, capstone, objdump' sequence being hard coded. This patch allows users to change that sequence, specifying via a 'perf config' 'annotate.disassemblers' entry which and in what order disassemblers should be attempted. 2024-10-23perf disasm: Use disasm_line__free() to properly free disasm_lineLi Huafei
symbol__disassemble_capstone_powerpc() goto the 'err' label when it failed in the loop that created disasm_line, and then used free() directly to free disasm_line. Since the structure disasm_line contains members that allocate memory dynamically, this can result in a memory leak. In fact, we can simply break the loop when it fails in the middle of the loop, and disasm_line__free() will then be called to properly free the created line. Other error paths do not need to consider freeing disasm_line. 2024-09-03perf annotate: LLVM-based disassemblerSteinar H. Gunderson
Support using LLVM as a disassembler method, allowing helperless annotation in non-distro builds. (It is also much faster than using libbfd or bfd objdump on binaries with a lot of debug information.) This is nearly identical to the output of llvm-objdump; there are some very rare whitespace differences, some minor changes to demangling (since we use perf's regular demangling and not LLVM's own) and the occasional case where llvm-objdump makes a different choice when multiple symbols share the same address. It should work across all of LLVM's supported architectures, although I've only tested 64-bit x86, and finding the right triple from perf's idea of machine architecture can sometimes be a bit tricky. Ideally, we should have some way of finding the triplet just from the file itself. 2024-07-31perf annotate: Add support to use libcapstone in powerpcAthira Rajeev
Now perf uses the capstone library to disassemble the instructions in x86. capstone is used (if available) for perf annotate to speed up. Currently it only supports x86 architecture. This patch includes changes to enable this in powerpc. For now, only for data type sort keys, this method is used and only binary code (raw instruction) is read. This is because powerpc approach to understand instructions and reg fields uses raw instruction. The "cs_disasm" is currently not enabled. While attempting to do cs_disasm, observation is that some of the instructions were not identified (ex: extswsli, maddld) and it had to fallback to use objdump. Hence enabling "cs_disasm" is added in comment section as a TODO for powerpc. 2024-07-31perf annotate: Use capstone_init and remove open_capstone_handle from disasm.cAthira Rajeev
capstone_init is made availbale for all archs to use and updated to enable support for CS_ARCH_PPC as well. Patch removes open_capstone_handle and uses capstone_init in all the places. Committer notes: Avoid including capstone/capstone.h from print_insn.h to not break the build in builtin-script.c due to the namespace clash with libbpf: /usr/include/capstone/bpf.h:94:14: error: 'bpf_insn' defined as wrong kind of tag Reviewed-by: Kajol Jain <kjain@linux.ibm.com> Reviewed-by: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Athira Rajeev <atrajeev@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Tested-by: Kajol Jain <kjain@linux.ibm.com> Cc: Adrian Hunter <adrian.hunter@intel.com> Cc: Akanksha J N <akanksha@linux.ibm.com> Cc: Christophe Leroy <christophe.leroy@csgroup.eu> Cc: Disha Goel <disgoel@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Cc: Hari Bathini <hbathini@linux.ibm.com> Cc: Ian Rogers <irogers@google.com> Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Cc: Madhavan Srinivasan <maddy@linux.ibm.com> Cc: Segher Boessenkool <segher@kernel.crashing.org> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20240718084358.72242-14-atrajeev@linux.vnet.ibm.com Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>
2024-07-31perf annotate: Update instruction tracking for powerpcAthira Rajeev
Add instruction tracking function "update_insn_state_powerpc" for powerpc. Example sequence in powerpc: ld r10,264(r3) mr r31,r3 <<after some sequence> ld r9,312(r31) Consider ithe sample is pointing to: "ld r9,312(r31)". Here the memory reference is hit at "312(r31)" where 312 is the offset and r31 is the source register. Previous instruction sequence shows that register state of r3 is moved to r31. So to identify the data type for r31 access, the previous instruction ("mr") needs to be tracked and the state type entry has to be updated. Current instruction tracking support in perf tools infrastructure is specific to x86. Patch adds this support for powerpc as well. 2024-07-31perf annotate: Add some of the arithmetic instructions to support ↵Athira Rajeev
instruction tracking in powerpc Data-type profiling has the concept of instruction tracking. Example sequence in powerpc: ld r10,264(r3) mr r31,r3 <<after some sequence> ld r9,312(r31) or differently lwz r10,264(r3) add r31, r3, RB lwz r9, 0(r31) If a sample is hit at "lwz r9, 0(r31)", data type of r31 depends on previous instruction sequence here. So to track the previous instructions, patch adds changes to identify some of the arithmetic instructions which are having opcode as 31. Since memory instructions also has cases with opcode 31, use the bits 22:30 to filter the arithmetic instructions here. Also there are instructions with just two operands like "addme", "addze".
